I enjoyed it so much, I went out and bought a new (used) O/U to shoot. Hoping some day I can be as good as my dad was. So get out there and burn some shells!

    One aspect that you failed to mention about NSSA Skeet is that the shoots are 4 gun affairs. This means you shoot 100 targets each with the 410, 28, 20, and 12 gauges. Typically the Registered Shoots will do 2 calibers on Saturday and the final 2 Calibers on Sunday. Note, The order of the calibers is determined by each venue so you may shoot 12 gauge and follow that up with the 410. Note, when this order comes up it's not too uncommon to see the shooters stepping forward after the first shot in 410 because they subconsciously braced themselves for a 12 gauge recoil. Also typical for the Registered shoots is a 100 round Doubles event typically held on the Friday before the 4 gun shoots. The doubles can be shot with any caliber and it's not at all uncommon to see the experienced competitors the sub calibers for the Doubles event. It's also not uncommon to see the 28 gauge used for the 28, 20, and 12 gauge events, shooting 20,000 or more rounds per year to stay competitive can damage the shoulder.
    So, next time out doing skeet grab a Silver Pigeon III in 410 and have a go with that. BTW, I have a Silver Pigeon III Sporting in a 28/410 2 barrel set and practice Skeet with the 410. It's the least expensive caliber to reload and it's just plain fun to shoot.

      I don't know what to make of this nonsense. In 1215 the Magna Carta was the FIRST constitutional document to express The Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms. Granted at that time it was referring to Lances and Swords and the like but later rulings by various Courts have made it clear that it also applies to Firearms. As for the importance of the Magna Carta, most of the Constitutions of Government worldwide are based on the Principles, and often the text, of the Magna Carta. Note, that was an English innovation so hats off to the Brit's for the Magna Carta.
      I'll also point out that the most dangerous time for the UK was September 7, 1940 when the German Blitz started. In all that onslaught England did not waiver or yield to Germany in spite of the lives lost lost with every bombing. England maintained a vital "beachhead" in Europe that was vital for the US Forces and the relatively quick end of the German 3rd Riech. Had England not had the resolve to stand and take that bombardment the world today would be a much different, and much less free, environment. The simple truth is that the entire World owes a debt to England for their resolve and courage. BTW, I do live in the USA and 20 of my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War.

    • @grant1430
      @grant1430 Год назад +1

      @@Scooter-dm3qo back then the UK wasn't a US territory now we have 100 bases there. There's no good reason for anyone in the UK to need a gun let alone swords and lances. But you are right though bearing arms is an old tradition. A resonable compromise is what we need.
      They should make a law that states all shotguns must be covered in protective foam and shooters at these events should be made to wear face shield thick gloves and chest plate. Also for double barrels to be legal they should have to make one barrel hammered flat to prevent rapid fire.

      Actual skeet has 8 places where you shoot from and you shoot doubles from each station except station 8. Gun should be on hip level and not shouldered and in doubles the birds leave towers at the same time.. This is some variation like they have in US. IMO the only actual skeet is Olympic Skeet.
      Station 1: High tower single, then a double with high tower shot first
      Station 2: High tower single, then a double with high tower shot first
      Station 3: High tower single, then a double with high tower shot first
      Station 4: High tower single, low tower single
      Station 5: Low tower single, then a double with low tower target first
      Station 6: Low tower single, then a double with low tower target first
      Station 7: Only a double with low tower target first
      Station 8: Single high tower facing the tower, single low tower facing the tower
      And this is only the qualification rules. Final rules are different.
      Speed of the birds is around 96km/h and they need to fly through the calibration hoop and a distance of 60m. You cannot shoot the bird before the marking pole and not after the marking pole. And in doubles the birds leave AT THE SAME TIME.
      Maximum shot load is 24g and size is generally 9 or 9,5

    A very enjoyable video TGS ... thanks I find skeet (& 5 - stand) quite relavent to how we pass shoot ducks on the water (wildfowling is the closest / similar to our approach) here in Canada ... our local sporting clays have a few presentations that are close to decoying ducks ... probably doves too. Nothing really simulates layout shooting or field shooting unless you bring the layout blinds out into the skeet / 5 stand field.

    Excellent video, I can say I've never shot much skeet. Johnny, you need to talk to your pals at Hull Cartridge about finding a Distributer here in the U.S..
    Presently we are paying between $9 - $12 USD for target loads and the shot sizes and loads are limited. Don't even ask about 28 and 410 shells and their costs.
    Also we desperately need a supplier for low recoil 2 1/2" shells. There is only one here at this time in the U.S. and he is having issues getting components and availability is almost nil. Not to mention 16 and 20 bore 2 1/2" shells are non existent. So the market for these shells is ripe for the picking! Help a guy out, I may be a Yank but I shoot a Purdey and drive a Land Rover

      @stuartsmith4279 Год назад +1

      Both wrong I'm afraid! Its not the selector that's taped up, its the cheek of the stock. The stock had an incident a few years back and the cheek snapped out of it, but it was repaired and had been fine until mid season this year when it cracked again. The new blank had been ordered and work was due to begin at the end of the season (it now has), but the tape was more of an insurance policy to help prevent any further damage, and to help it last until the end of that particular event. And it was definitely not ever about imitating anyone!!

      The longer barrels are " In-Vogue" just these last few years... not uncommon to see high-level skeet shooters pushing 32" barrels. A few have told me the longer mass/momentum arc makes their swings more smooth. My "skeet gun" is a Browning 725 Pro Sporting with 30" ported barrels. That's plenty long enough for all disciplines, yet short enough for a quick reactionary swing on position #8 in skeet.

    I mean i dont know how he can teach shooting skeet when he is not shooting skeet. It is 100 times easier to hit the target with gun shouldered and the bird leaving immediately after "pull". In real skeet you can't shoulder the gun, you always shoot doubles and there is a timer for 0-3 seconds when you call the bird.. This is some weird variation with a little bit skeet elements but made a lot easier...

    • @stuartsmith4279
      @stuartsmith4279 Год назад +1

      This is skeet, specifically English or National Skeet, and NSSA or American Skeet. No they're not Olympic, but they both have a far greater following than the Olympic variant (the NSSA Skeet world Championships routinely have in excess of 1,000 entrants - an eye watering number of participants when compared to any Olympic Skeet event anywhere in the world). They are both internationally recognised as Skeet disciplines, and both hold national and international tournaments and championships.
      There is no need to put down a discipline because you feel it is easy or not what it "should be", we are all clay shooters and should be supportive of all the disciplines and each other.
