      @@tucholsk1 the good news is that we always have the opportunity to start again and try to do better. But having said that, I also think it’s good to acknowledge that even when your work is good, it might not necessarily be good to you. And we should always allow people to receive our work in any way that they want to without us making any excuses for it. but as an artist, I think it’s really important to be honest with yourself, I think that’s the only way to continue to grow. It’s easy to think you’re the greatest when you might win an award, even when you know that your work was not up to your own standards. I think it always just has to be about the work, not the accolades. Thanks so much for coming through and for taking the time to contribute, I greatly appreciate that. And keep making art!

    You expend energy every time you work on some thing, but you don't get it back till it is "declared" done. Breaking big projects into steps where that can be finished, is a great way to keep your energy level up. Thanks.

    Hey Rock, great video and insights! As a recently retired art professor, and after making art seriously for more than 40 years, I find it more and more difficult to make work. It just doesn’t get easier. But as you say, it is worth it. Maybe your angst re the shot you missed is a message you are sending yourself to make an entire piece based on that one thing “thing” - the thing that you missed. It might be that important. Thanks again, much appreciated!

      Hmmm... that's a great idea, thank you for that. I'm gonna sit with it and let it marinate for a while. Much appreciated. Obsessing on "what we miss", as opposed to "what we got" is an interesting and complex notion that really interests me. Appreciate you for this. @@CabralCreates if that's the case, that would be everything! To give people the energy to continue is what we all should be doing for one another. Because as you well know, it's never easy. first 10 min. you say that YOU know its not your best.
    BUT. from my experience with audience i know that they CAN receive your work from totally different perspective and pay attention to absolutely different aspects, which you thought was BASIC or secondary.
    so even if you think its your 70% of possibilities, it can hit audience stronger than work which you think is your 100%.
    we artists need to understand that this dance is not only about us, its about your partner-viewer-listener also.

    Im only part way through watching this on Christmas day but, incase you don't make this point : that feeling of I can do better is motivational. Sometimes we are hypercritical of ourselves and sometimes we are over enthusiastic about what we have achieved. I agree with what your saying and it can be hard to know at one point in time, when to leave "imperfections" and chalk it down to a point of difference, a captured moment, or when to call it bad. Its risky and its why we love the creative process

    • @RockWILK
      @RockWILK  17 дней назад +1

      @@dangerrayy Amen. It’s all part of our creative journey. Sometimes you just have to finish, but that doesn’t mean you’re gonna feel good about that work completely. Like I say in the video, I’m still very proud of this film, but I just know that I could’ve done so much better, and I feel like that about so much of my work. I don’t make excuses for it ever, And I don’t get hung up on it, but I don’t ignore it either. It’s part of the growth, the learning process that we all continue to stay with, hopefully until we die. I don’t believe anybody ever gets quite “there“. There’s always room to evolve.Thanks so much for coming through, I greatly appreciate that, and thank you for taking the time to actually comment, that means a lot to me. Have a great holiday!

    I think The Center of Distance is a brilliant film. To be honest, I never thought about what you shot it with the whole time I watched it. I think you did fantastic work with a smartphone. I was never taken out of the story. Your storytelling, compositions, editing of The Center of Distance was spot on. I was engaged every moment from the beginning until the end. It was proof that the best camera you have is the one in your hand.
    I appreciate your sharing that film and This is the End for Me with us. I know I say it a lot, but I say it because its true, that your work is inspirational. I was literally seconds away from giving up on my own work when I came across your channel. I just hope I can give back as much as you have given me some day. I hope I can contribute to the world, to the filmmaking and artist community as much as I have received. Thank you for continuing to release powerful and insightful commentary and content. I will be forever grateful for your work and inspiration.

      Man, I appreciate this so much. You and your story are EXACTLY why art matters. And I'm so humbled to have some kind of inspirational and motivational effect on you to the point of you deciding to continue doing what you were born to do. The saddest thing is when creative people stop because of the lack of support, acknowledgement and respect for what they are doing. The journey that we are all on is such a challenge because most people just don't get it unless you somehow become a celebrity, or at least financially successful. But art isn't about any of that. It's nice to have money, but art is spirit, it is soul and love, and at least to me, art is the exact reason why there is still some hope left in this world. With all of the horrific things going on around us, artists continue to paint, sing, dance, tell stories, and share all of it. And that is the magic that exists on this planet. It is the art that is created and making everything beautiful, even when it's ugly, art is transformative and so, if I have played any kind of role in keeping you on that sort of contributing path, then I feel like mine is a life well lived. Not to sound too dramatic, although I am dramatic for a living, but as trite and corny as all of this might sound, it's precisely how I honestly feel. It's what I believe, and I always will, no matter what. And so, thank you, and we will continue to do what we do, because it's what we are made of. Punto.
