  • Jennifer Marotta gives some tips for trumpet students who are working on Arban's "Art of Phrasing," #6, the Last Rose of Summer.
    Practice tips:
    1. Repetition reinforces muscle memory, which leads to good habits. Repeat something many times correctly before moving on.
    2. Subdivide the 16ths in the dotted 8th/16th pattern so that the rhythm is accurate.
    3. Before a bigger interval jump, keep your air moving constantly, so that you don't lose momentum when you skip.

Excellent video. The timing tip on the dotted 8ths-16ths is gold dust. Your sound is beautiful.

I have a hard time with the E grace note to D. My trumpet prefers to go back up to F. Any suggestions?

Your air speed/amount may be just a bit too fast or too much if it wants to go up instead of down. Maybe play with a more gentle air flow so that it isn't intensifying, which might make it move up instead of down. Just one possibility, anyways! On the positive side, it must mean that you have a focused embouchure! :)

Hello! Two main reasons. One is that I think it’s helpful for younger students to see what they’re hearing, and not just blindly listen. The other is pure convenience for me! :) I have two little ones quarantined at home and can only work on this late at night once or twice a week max. So, setting up cameras and syncing audio/video adds extra steps that I have limited time for. I look forward to when that vaccine comes and kids are in school! Thanks again for listening in!
