I love this guitar. The appointments versus the price is astounding. What I love about its tone is by lowering the pickups and using your volume knob, you can really bring out the woodiness of the tone, which I like a lot. If I'm playing clean or just on the edge of breakup, I'll have the volume at about 7 and it gives a very nice hollow body sound. When going into a solo I just turned the volume up to 9 or 10 and it cuts right through and leaves the mud behind.

It's simply incredible that these guitars are still less than $700, brand new.
They have so many tonal possibilities and the build quality is superior to anything less than a Gibson 335.
The Super 58 pick ups are the secret weapon and the fact that Ibanez puts them in any guitar priced at less than 2k is another huge plus factor. I also own an Ibanez Full hollow guitar that I put some Seymour Duncan Seth Lover's PAF's into and these 58's are their near rivals.
With some patience and the right amp, the entire spectrum of what a semi hollow guitar can produce is there for the taking.
Oh, and they are also beautiful to look at.

One of the cheapest guitars I ever bought was a 2016 Ibanez AS53 semi-hollow body, got her home, plugged her into the amp for five minutes and came to the conclusion right away that this guitar felt great and it made me want to play it, but those cheap pickups had to go. I had a Gibson classic 57 which I put in the neck and a Seymour Duncan Dime-Bucker I put in the bridge within the first 2 hours of owning the guitar. That guitar has been my #1 for the last 6 years.

Although it took me from when I began learning to play guitar in 1995 until 16 years later before I bought my first semi-hollow model, it has otherwise been a personal quest to help demonstrate something which has not frequently been shown, that a semi-hollow guitar can be played in a hard rock context. Three musicians I know of that demonstrated it include Brian May, Ted Nugent and the late Alvin Lee. I realize that the muddy nature of models like this one doesn’t easily lend itself to hard rock, but it’s always been something of a treat to witness when somebody has made that happen the way I tried to do with the 5 semi-hollow/hollow guitars I owned before and am presently trying to do with my Fender Modern Player Deluxe Thinline Telecaster and my Yamaha SA-2000.

I have an AS93 FM Artcore and I think it has great value for the money. Top line Ibanez guitars are played by very talented musicians (Metheny, Scofield, Benson, Vai). However, the AS 93 is not without issues. One is the switch and pots, which seem loose and cheaper than other brands in the same price range. One volume pot crackles slightly, which indicates dust or something got into the interior of a relatively new instrument. The other issue is neck dive. This guitar is not well balanced and one has to be constantly aware not to let go of the neck while standing and risk breaking something. I recently bought a Yamaha Revstar Pro (more than twice the cost of the AS93) and am very happy with it. My desire for a quality semi hollow body guitar remains strong, so I also ordered a Yamaha SA2200 at 3X the cost of the Ibanez. Excellent reviews everywhere, basically a Gibson ES 335 killer due to the reputable Japanese custom shop QC and comparable playability at half the cost. I'll make a comparison with the AS93, but one thing the SA2200 solves in online reviews is balance, and therein eliminates the neck dive issue. We'll see. It also has a neat coil-splitting function with the tone knobs, which brings in a whole new range of tones not many 335s have. The SA2200 is played by one of the world's top jazz guitarists, Bireli Lagrene. The Revstar is played by another stunning jazz fusion guitarist, Matteo Mancuso, who brings a unique classical right hand technique into jazz, rock and fusion. These players will set your hair on fire!

I purchased an Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AM93QM Semi-Hollow a few months ago. The one with a quilted maple top. The body is a bit smaller than the AS93, more like the Epiphone ES-339 to the 335. Anyway, I went with the smaller body for the more comfortable weight and tighter tone in the low end. It's a beautifully constructed guitar. Necks a bit chunky, but it's comfortable and plays really well. It's very versatile with separate tone and volume knobs. They respond very well. I did struggle a bit with the voicing of the Super-58 pickups. They were a bit hotter and more mid focused than I hoped they'd be. Hotter than Gibson or Epiphone stock pickups in comparable guitars. So, I lowered the pickups a bit and I keep the volume down a bit in general and I eventually found the tones I was looking for. The guitar has great sustain and a variety of tonal options on tap. With the neck pickup I get a great thick and smooth jazz tone with 11s-52's. I can do the classic rock and alternative-rock sounds with the bridge pickup and the tone rolled down to calm the bright highs.... I've found that my AM93 and the Super-58 pickups handle gain quite well going into a clean amp. Although, I'm not often a high gain player, but when I do use overdrive, I've found that amp-in-a-box type pedals sound great, as do, light to medium gain pedals. I'm loving this thing. Ibanez makes some fine guitars, and mine is no exception. Thanks for your videos. I've learned quite a bit here. All the best!

I just left a comment here about my debate between buying the AS93 or the AM93QM that you have. I posted that comment before seeing yours haha. I'd love to pick your brain about it if you don't mind. I've seen quite a few people say they immediately lowered the pickups after purchasing the guitar so it seems I'd also be doing that to get the tone I want.

Hey Jake, happy to share whatever knowledge I have about these semi-hallow Ibanez guitars. Ask away! Since posting the above comment I've become more familiar with this ax and I'm so pleased with it. I'm now playing 10's and I'm loving the tones. These super 58's are actually quite bright on the top end with tight, warm lows with just a bit of a mid hump. I manage the mids by dialing back the mids on my amp. I set my Fender Blues Jr (which is a brightish amp) with the bass way up at 10, mids at 5, and the treble around 7 or 8. This seems to work well with this guitar. When I play subtle single note this guitar sings with a clear, warm, beautiful jazz voice. And when I dig in with overdrive, it doesn't get muddy or break up. Notes ring out and the harmonics are fantastic. This guitar hums in your hands. I've been playing with gain and fuzz and it handles them well. I agree that transparent OD's may not be the best and pedals with a full frequency and some warmth in the lows may suit it well. Although, I have several low to mid gain so called transparent OD's and they work beautifully with this AM93. I think it's great for driving indie rock, grunge, anything really. The thing is so versatile. I even get some quack out of it on the bridge pickup, as well as, some great funk sounds. It's a great guitar. I'm loving it more and more with time. And at it's price point, I don't think you can do better. @@jakeh12121

Thanks Jack for all your great videos and technical info. I discovered your channel after I purchased an Epiphone Elitist Casino made in Japan, and I was looking for some perspective info on Casino's.
About 2yrs. ago I was drawn in to buy a used AS93 based on looks and price. At first, I generally liked the AS93 but thought the neck to be a bit chunky, as I've been used to Gibson slim taper necks. Then I discovered that the newer AS93's have a more modern C profile neck. I have since gotten comfortable with the one I have and find it to hold tunning and intonation better than my 335 and 355 Gibson's. Granted the Ibanez is fairly new and the Gibson's are from the 70"s. The older Gibson's need much more frequent setup attention. The Ibanez just remains more solid with little tinkering. I would attribute some of that to the 3-piece neck and locking Gotoh tuners that the previous owner installed. I have all 3 sitting out ready to play, and I more often go for the Ibanez. Also, the Ibanez sits much more balanced in the sitting position. I need to use a strap when playing the Gibson's while sitting.

I also play two Epiphone Korean factory Dots that are worlds better than the newer ones and really deliver. I have been looking at these AS93fm's for a while and haven't really decided to pull the trigger. Thanks for the video as it has made my desire to purchase one even greater.

I’ve got the 73. I’ve been slowly making it a killer budget 335. New harness with CTS pots, Orange Drops, and Switchcraft, and I’ve had the Probuckers I pulled from my Epiphone Les Paul, and it’s great. But I’m having a set of Duncan 59s getting installed right now.
The 73 has the “classic elite” pickups, which are ceramics. They sound fine, but are just a little too hot and compressed for me. The Epiphone pups are more of the PAF thing, and the Duncans will take it a bit closer.

I want an ES-335 type guitar but I don't want to spend too much because semi-hollowbody guitars aren't my thing. I mean my Les Paul is a Gibson and I didn't mind shelling out 2800 for it or my Japanese Ibanez guitars were also around 2 grand but a Gibson ES-335 costs about the same my Les Paul did so I've been looking at Ibanez and Epiphone and SIRE 335 copies. The SIRE Larry Carlton 335 feels like a 2000 dollar guitar when it comes to the neck and fret treatment and it only costs 600 bucks so I might go with that. Thanks Jack, great vids.

I've been debating between this AS93 and the AM93QM. I've watched so many videos, read articles, forums, looked at shops, and have decided on this Ibanez series but still can't decide which model. From the specs they are identical in almost every way, including price, except the AM is approx 1 inch +/- shorter and narrower than the AS. I've never owned a hollowbody or semi-hollow and I'm curious if that small size difference would make much of a difference in tone. Most of the videos out there are on the AS rather than the AM's and the AS was what I was always considering, but now I'm leaning towards the AM only because it comes in the Jet Blue color that I love, and the AS only comes in red or sunburst variants. Wondering if anyone has any input about the difference between these two models aside from the spec sheet? The only thing I've really been able to find from peoples experience is that the AM is apparently more comfortable to hold as its more of a typical solid body size. I'm really looking for vintage rock and jazz tones (50's sound, Chuck Berry etc, and bluesy clean and country tones) and don't want to lose any of that sound by choosing the smaller hollow body. Maybe I'm just overthinking it. Any advice or input appreciated!

I don't have expierience with both, never had played a semi hollow, but always wanted one. I also went back and forth and decided on a used am93-ays because of the smaller size. Mostly i was worried, not having any 335 size guitars to try, that i wouldnt like the bigger size in an electric guitar. I had gotten rid of my electrics after moving off grid 20+ years ago. Had i still had a solid body dual humbucker guitar, i would probably have gotten the AS model. But only because that is the traditional size. The am is great both plugged and unplugged. I really like the neck, size, weight, aesthetics and sounds i can get from it. I play clean to breakup using the guitar volume and tone knobs. Early rock and roll, blues, country tones. I have only one pedal and it is for reverb to add some space to the home made bassman circuit amp that i use in my small one room cabin.
I have modified the guitar some.
I changed out the wiring to 50's circuit, replaced the .033uf caps with .022uf. While the ibanez super 58 pickups were fine, i wanted a clearer, more open tone from the neck than i was able to get, so i installed a tv jones supertron. The bridge supertron wasnt for my taste, but the neck i really enjoy. In the bridge i have experimented with a few paf output range humbuckers and magnets. They all sound good there, just depends what one is looking for. I know this didn't directly answer your question, but maybe it is useful. Whatever you decide, you will enjoy playing it i think.

@@iak706 Thanks for the reply! Glad to hear you were able to customize it to your liking.
In the time since I wrote that comment, I ended up ordering the AM93. Such a beautiful guitar right out of the box. Unfortunately I found multiple problems with the guitar, mostly due to poor QC from Ibanez. The guitar shop I ordered it from ships it directly in the condition that Ibanez sends it to them so it was no fault of theirs. I was very surprised as well because in every review I read or video I watched on this guitar they were happy with it right out of the box. First of all they didn’t do any set up whatsoever, not even a basic set up. The action was all over the place, poor intonation, fret buzz across the entire neck on all strings, pick up heights were not set and pole piece screws were not adjusted to the guitar or bridge/neck radius whatsoever. I found multiple nicks and scratches across the body and tuners. All four knobs wobbled, the pick guard was loose, specks of debris dried into the clear coat, chipping in the binding in multiple areas. Fret ends were so sharp that they actually cut my hand enough to cause bleeding. I’m thinking I just coincidentally got one bad Apple that wasn’t QC’d before leaving the factory because everyone has said the QC was great with theirs. If it was just in need of a basic set up that would be one thing but with as many issues as I found I wasn’t happy and for what I paid it should’ve been in much better condition. Another thing that frustrated me was that the serial number did not register in any Ibanez or serial number website look up database. All it said was made in Indonesia but it had a serial number that no one had heard of. When I googled it others had said the same thing, that they had the serial number like mine that didn’t show up anywhere, not even on Ibanez’s official serial number chart. With the bad quality I received and being unable to lookup any information by the serial number it makes me wonder exactly where it came from. I ended up sending it back to the store I purchased from and they are exchanging it and sending me another exact model. Unfortunately they just emailed me today saying that they received the return but now they are back ordered indefinitely and have no estimate of when I will receive the new one so I’m a little frustrated about that. I’m hoping the next one will be better because I really did like the guitar and the way it felt, plus it was absolutely beautiful in the blue finish.

Wow! That's an awful experience. Sorry to hear. I had the complete opposite experience with my AM93qm in sunburst purchased from Sweetwater about 6 months ago. Everything was mint out of the box and that may be due to the point inspection they do. Although, it did have one issue and that was somewhat sharp fret ends. I filed them down myself and they are smooth as silk now. As I understand it, guitars in this price range really need a good set up to make them comfortable to play. However, what you experienced was beyond needing a set up. Hey, everyone I know who owns an Ibanez, loves their guitar. So keep the faith. I hope it was just an anomaly and you'll receive a great guitar. All the best!

HI Jack - I have the As93FM. Bought it about 2 years ago. I am trying to learn jazz, and this was to be my go to jazz guitar. However, I am a little disappointed in the tone. For me it sounds rather brittle. The mids are ok, but the low end off the 5th and 6th strings sound flat, like they lack character. I'm playing into a Vox 10 watt tube amp. I have read that these guitars are made in China and the super 58 pickups are not the same as the super 58's out of Japan. Some people recommend swapping them out for Seymore Duncan SH55 Seth Lovers plus new pots. That is going to cost me as much as the guitar itself. I just don't know. What I can tell you is that I have a MIJ thinline Fender telecaster I bought in 1985 and that gives me better and cleaner jazz tones than my Ibanez AS93. Any suggestions?? Many thanks

I don’t recall seeing any..many?…negative reviews.

Mine definitely had some fretwork issues. A few dead spots that couldn't be sorted with a setup alone. Big bummer.

stock as 73 into a 5watt tube amp. vox influenced, bugera v5. get an od pedal and you can cover almost any style. i use a rat for hetfield shit. anything else a ts808 clone or klon clone, dimed. thats how men use a klon, dimed. you want to pay ten grand for an od pedal and put the gain on three? people are retards. dime it. theres A VOLUME ON YOUR GUITAR FOR A REASON
