As someone who's been playing the cajon for nearly 5 years at this stage, this is perhaps the best tutorial video I've come across - crisp, clear instruction with quality drumming to boot - definitely going to take a lot of this to heart - cheers Ross
I am a guitar player and I've always wanted to play the drums and never really had the space. I just built my first cajon and can't get enough. Your videos along with "play cajon" videos, have helped so much. Thanks so much!
Alright, I gotta agree with everybody else here. In my opinion, and this is saying allot, you are by far the best tutorialist on RUclips for the Cajon! And there's a lot of good people here to, so absolutely no lack of respect for anybody. You just have a real passion that is easy to see and understand. Plus how you word things and explain stuff really makes it easy to get something out of your videos! I just got my first Cajon and used to have some very limited drum experience about 4 years ago, but have played other instruments as well. However, this is my favorite by far! I have less than 45 min on the Cajon and can already play a pretty good tempo in 1/16 notes with the rock beat. Not saying much, but I already see potential to really have some serious fun! Also got an alright start to the finger roll. :) I love your videos and you need to keep going! Thank you Ross for the awesome tutorials! All thumbs up!
Devyn Jackson I just wanted reply again to say thank you so much for the support (a RUclips glitch deleted all my old comments). How are you going with cajon now?
I agree with Michael Thierry, you have the best and easiest to follow cajon lessons. My husband just built me a cajon and the internet is my only access to a teacher. Good job and a huge thanks for making these lessons available.
I just bought the meinl makah burl cajon for my church. I'm actually a trumpet payer. I play trumpet in the morning service with a full band. in the evening service though, it is only 1 acoustic guitar and it lacks a lot. I thought I'd get this and learn some beats to spice up the music and make it sound more full. I absolutely love this cajon video. It has made me realize that it's not impossible. some of the things you were doing like the thing at the top of the cajon. I believe it was a fill with both hands at the top. it's all plenty for worship music with one guitar. I a not going to stop there. I love this thing. I'm going to get really good and join some other styles of music and perform and really have some fun. thank you for the video. keep them coming please.
I actually took it back and the the LP Americana series cajon. it has a much deeper low energy it seems and a more crisp snare. This cajon is fantastic. it has some small nicks in the faceplate, but in great shape. it's a tad smaller then the meinl cajons. Fantastic cajon. I wish this version had the choice to drop the snares off and just get the natural sound of the box with no sizzle. I've only seen one like that though. any tips and tricks to advance quick besides what you put in this video. Please excuse the typos. I'm doing this on my phone.
I am very amateur percussionist, playing the congas for a couple of months now, and I am the proud owner of a cajon for just a couple of days. This video really gave me the path of how to start building some skill and get the most out of this awesome instrument. Kudos and thank you very much for this brilliant video!!!!!!!
Thanks so much and welcome to the channel! Great to hear about your new cajon too. Feel free to comment on any of my videos whenever you have questions etc.
I just ordered my first Cajon! I am totally stoked! I can't wait to try this! I've been playing guitar for 23 years and have decided to delve into drumming with the Cajon! Ross you are the man!
Your cajon videos are clearly the best ones on RUclips! From one artist to another, keep doing what you're doing! Music is the only way we can heal this broken world!
I just started playing a cajon just to jam with my acoustic friend group so that I could be more comfortable. I play drums fir the past 7 years now and thanks dude love the vid .. helped a lot
what a great course, im a singer and a guitarist and bought a cajon just because i love the sound of it. So excited to start this is my first lesson, you did a GREAT JOB thank you, im gonna recommend your channel for all my fellow musicians who want to learn the cajon!
Hi Ross, Just wanted to say that I've been watching your videos for the past few weeks and I think you're a fantastic teacher. I like how your advanced lessons are genuinely advanced, as most cajon channels on RUclips seem to stick to pretty basic stuff. Thanks for all your videos and I look forward to seeing the next one! Alan
AlanKey86 Hey just wanted to reply to you again to say thanks for the support! A RUclips glitch deleted my old comments. How are you going with the cajon now?
I just started playing a couple of days ago (I've been a drummer for 8 years) and this video also helped me to know how I can apply my drumming skills here and there without getting out of "the cajon playing", nice video man! Cheers!
this is the best Cajon tutorial I have watched till now. And trust me I have literally digged up RUclips for Cajon tutorials. So thank you, I appreciate it.
Wow that’s super nice of you to say and I’m glad I could get you that extra step forward with playing the instrument! If you ever have questions, just ask 😀
Definitely sir. All the love to you from india. You're doing a commendable job. Please do keep it up for budding musicians like us. It's said that You are what you think. And you are definitely a gem of a person. Be safe amidst this pandemic, all the regards to your loved ones.
Hi Ross. I'd just like to say, that from a fellow percussionist, that what you have going for ya on this channel is great! You have good playing skill and have helped to talk me into getting a cajon, and I love it! The drum set with the cajon as the bass works out really well too. Great stuff.
Ross: I've been watching your channel for some time, but now I decided to seriously learn cajon every Sunday - so I'm progressively learning this playlist and having a lot of fun with it. Hopefully and with the right effort, I will have learned how to play an instrument by the end of the playlist. Cheers!
That was an amazing lesson! I'm thinking of saving for a Cajon so I can buy one, I do hand drumming and a Cajon seemed interesting! I'll come back to this vid if I ever get one!

This tutorial helped me so much. One of my friends is going to show me how to play the cajon and this video helped me be more confident in trying it out. Thanks so much.
Bravo!! This video is REALLY approachable and gives even the lamest of lamens (me, before i clicked this video) a solid foundation to work on and a fighting chance.
Thank you so much for the great feedback. Glad you're off to a good start with cajon! If you're interested, I have a new video coming out tonight. It's a collaboration with a fantastic acoustic guitarist. Here's a link for later :-) ruclips.net/video/_rqTETpcNrA/видео.html

Hi Ross, Thank you so much your help. I´m a begginer playing and I have learned a lot with your tutorials. You are a fantastic teacher!! Best regards from Spain!!
You sound fantastic. This would be so perfect for sitting in a living room with two acoustic guitars and a bass guitar--and where volumes revolve around vocals with no mics. Very cool!
Dude! I got a cajon a month ago and love playing it. I'm still new to it, hopeful with more practice I can be as good as you and others that play. Thanks for the tips.
Dude You make the cajon sound like an actual instrument and not like a independent local acoustic band with a wannabe drummer. You make me consider gettin one for myself, great vídeo.
That’s why I love playing it! It’s something so simple but deep. You have to give it the same time you give any instrument before it will really respond in a musical way. I hope you get into playing it :-)
Excellent video. I've been apprehensive about getting a cajon. I think I'm sold that this instrument will be very helpful in my development as a drummer overall. Thank you Ross!
***** OH! I forgot to ask, in terms of brand, is Meinl a good/affordable brand to start on? Or should I invest into an LP? I'm a guitar player by trade, but I'm considering doing percussion back-up when there is already another acoustic player playing.

Excellent... nice teaching ... I see this in a small room or small venue playing unplugged acoustic instruments, while many try to mike these boxes to do more than they can do, and all they get is sound mud. ...and I wonder how many are born to be able to staccato trigger hammer their fingers with the weight it takes and the coordination!? he, obviously can.

I think cajon is for me. I'm always better drumming on my desk at work than I am sitting behind my kit. The patterns I come up with are far more interesting and groovy. Will save a lot of space in the rehearsal room ;)
Just one word for your tutorials "Awesome " I loved the way you made it sound so easy and simple. Henceforth , I'll watch all your tutorials and follow the instructions ,till I learn to play a cajon . Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge on playing cajon !
Thanks Ross ! Will definitely look forward to take your guidance whenever I get stuck. Today i practiced till the 16th note but at a very slow speed. i do not have a cajon, hence i improvised the wooden base of my sofa set into a cajon to practice the beats. Once i get used to synchronizing both my hands, i would buy a cajon. I'm basically a guitar player but recently developed interest in playing cajon. Thanks once again for these wonderful videos. Will watch them one by one as I progress in learning cajon. Today was my first day and I really enjoyed playing.. Thanks once again !
holy crap man...i jsut picked up a mini cajon by meinl to see if i liked drumming (guitarist) instead of dropping 300 on a nice snare box, and boy let me tell you, im glad i came across your video because your flow sounds so nice on my mini even i play so badly lol, nice to see a youngster i can relate to =D good vids bra

I prefer using the right hand for the ghost notes, as that is the hand used for high hat on drums, and I can't bring myself to switch them around
+Cajon Groove Guide you're absolutely right, I don't usually play ghost notes on cajon too much, but I should start practicing that more.
Excellent guide!!! Just got my cajon yesterday and I'm already feeling the groove
