  • In this animation we explain what a hernia is and that this condition can involve discs in the spine. Although in many cases herniated discs recover without intervention, sometimes surgery is necessary. In the animation we explain the different types of surgical treatment of a herniated disc, such as an open discectomy, a laminotomy and a laminectomy.

I've been dealing with sciatica for almost a year now, ever since last mother's day. I've gone to my doctor countless of times, and even went to an urgent care. They all prescribed me the same thing, muscle relaxers and naproxen, neither of which worked. Two months ago they finally told me to see a physical therapist, and I did. It worked a little bit at first, I wasn't in much pain in general, but I still went through these really bad episodes where the pain was a 10 nonstop for 30 minutes or so. It's gotten worse, I wake up in the middle of the night in pain, I've started using wheelchairs if I go out to places like Walmart. I got a MRI a couple days ago and the guy said it was a really bad herniated disc, so I came here to see what surgery would be like for it. I cannot deal with living day in and day out in pain, I dont even get a rest from it when I'm sleeping. Hopefully the pain will end soon. And for anyone else dealing with a herniated disc, I hope you get better as well, I know how much it sucks.

I went to this exactly like this for a long time but the best way was surgery not physical therapy, it was a waste of time. If you don’t get surgery my doctor told me if so then you lose your connection to your leg or worse

That's the boat I'm in and when you have 1hour 15 minute drive one of way to work it's more or less torture. Pain so extreme it wakes you right out of sleep and relentlessly makes certain you stay awake. Hoping the injection works, if not it's under the knife I go.

I just had an open discectomy 1 week ago on two herniated discs that I had. It has changed my life. After dealing with agony and loss of feeling and strength in my left foot for the last 2 years I now have no sciatic pain and feeling back in my leg/ foot. Best thing I have ever done.

If anyone's dealing with this at the moment, don't believe the people who say that you have to live with the pain. Around Jan 1 2018 I injured my back and I couldn't stand up or walk for more then 10 seconds for about 2-3 weeks. I went to the dr who prescribed me pain killers which didn't help much at the time. It slowly got better after a few weeks, but I'm telling you it all went SLOWLY! After 4 weeks or so, I could walk longer and longer and could stand up for longer and longer. But again it was really hard to live a normal life where you can't stand up for more then maybe 3-4 minutes before you have to sit or lay down because you're in so much pain. Grocery shopping was a pain, no social life etc. However, long story short, after I got an MRI and did some physical therapy and an injection, it got better and better and now at the end of August 2018 I am 99% pain free and back at the gym exercising very careful and playing hockey once a week. I still need to stretch and try to swim once a week. But keep it mind that it gets better if you stay positive and are ready to do some work. There's normally a reason to why you're having the pain and your body doesn't try to just give you some pain for no reason. There, you have to be ready to correct the damage that you have done to your body and get stronger and prevent it from happening again. That's why I think physical therapy is great because they can see what you as an individual need to do. The main reason i posted this comment is because it was very hard for me to read some of the comments that said that this pain ill never go away, especially when I was still in sooo much pain after 6 weeks and that's when they say most people will be healed without any surgery, I was even in a lot of pain after 3-4 months. It will go away but you have to work for it and be patient.

Mikael Johansson here is what I will say to you. If someone like yourself can come away from this with therapy absolutely they should do it. I did all the therapy I was prescribed after my MRI for a herniated disc and things only got worse. It was the worst thing I have ever gone through so decided to do surgery. Yes it is risky in a small way and more intrusive but at least it will be done. It was done and I am no longer in any pain and off all pain meds. So surgery is the answer at times.

Ive had lower disc problems on the bottom two on my left side and had sciatica for 12 years now due to slipped discs. Im now 36 and I've been off work 9-10 weeks with horrendous pain and discomfort constantly. Im on naproxen, cocodamol, and muscle relaxation tablets and im convinced the medical district doesn't give a shit about this condition. My pain was so bad two days ago my girlfriend tooknme to a&e and i sat in pain for three hours only to be given a single dose of diazipahm and told to contact my doctor today (Monday) to chase up the results of a mri scan i had a month ago. I'm almost breaking down mentally with it and im a very strong headed man and gets on with it but i honestly believe they would rather chuck meds at the problem than sort it. Ive come here in hope that my specialist will do one of these to me and help myself and others struggling with this issue some hope of regaining life again as im really struggling myself with what to do or how to cope with it.

Medical researchers are working on a new technique to treat the herniated disc. In this technique they inject an empty injection into the nucleus pulposus and suck it out partially. Extra pressure on the nurves is immediately released like puncturing a football. After few days Anulus fibrosus starts going back to original position. Low cost and low pain treatment. Win win

I've been having lower back pain since april this year and up till now, it hasn't healed. I went to the hospital and various doctors and all they gave me were painkillers or antidepressants, which of course gave me temporary relief but the pain gradually comes creeping back after a few hours. I have a degenerated and slipped disc in my l5s1 and it hurts everyday, sometimes even when i'm trying to sleep. What's worse is that i'm only 16 and this pain is ruining my everyday life because i can't do things that normal healthy teenagers can do anymore like sports and stuff and i really love sports. What we love destroys us bruh life be like that

My mom who is 47 years old has a herniated disc in L5 S-1 disc too, as a result she’s also gotten sciatica pain. Initially she went to a chiropractor and they did decompression of the spine or something like that. She was ok for a bit but now the pain came back worse, she spends most of the day laying down. She had to get B12 shots for the sciatica nerve and at this point we are trying to see what our options are. I tell her surgery is probably the best bet but she’s scared. I prefer Neurosurgeons are best who are specialist in spine. I work in hospital as a admin staff, I deal with these cases on daily life. I had disk herniation from last 1 year, physiotherapy and medicine doesn't work in most cases. It's depends on herniated disc size. I have done MRI and revealed L4 Disc herniation. Yesterday i underwent steroid injection for the same in my spine L4 to reduce inflammation and to releif pain. Doctor recommended me some spinal physiotherapy after 2 days and it may get improved (50-50%). now I am feeling better, redicular pain is low to the right leg. If pain still persist then I need to go for surgery to remove that part of herniated disc which compressing the nerve by neurosurgeon.

Hi TheTaurusborn61, sorry to hear you maybe need surgery. Maybe it helps to think about the positive side of it: there is still a treatment option. And if surgery is successful, you might be without or with less symptoms the rest of your life! Hopefully the epidurals do there work, and otherwise we wish you strength for the possible surgery! kyjoe9 if you feel pain in your legs then yes, it is a herniated disc. Most of the time it heals by itself after like 4-6 weeks but if it still the same you would go see a doctor. You should go see a doctor whenever you get a back injury because a injury to the back is nothing to play about with. The sooner you are able to get it diagnosed and treated the faster you’ll heal.

I had the worst pain I've ever had because a herniated disc in my neck (C5 and C6). I was losing hope for life, and even being able to function in anyway. I was in so much pain that I would just cry all day, hoping for the night to come so I could knock myself out with enough Ambien. I am starting to feel better after over 3 weeks of this pain. I wanted to say what I did to help in the healing process, lots of prayer, prayer from people that I don't know. I also bought a neck traction that pulls your vertibrates apart. I used it for about 10 minutes two times now, and the pain has gone from a 10 to about a 4. I am in much better spirits because of it. My next suggestion would be to get a decompression table, or decompression machine to put you upside down with the help of someone so you can get things pulled apart so the disc can go back into place.

Hello Moserkat, either do I. Fortunately, there are different ways to treat a herniated disc. Best regards

  •  5 лет назад +1

Dear doctors, experienced patients and all,
i am a 29 years old man - 1.80 cm and 80 kg. i had a herniated disk in 2016 under L4, and that time i had also a small herniation under L5. Most of the doctors that time suggested me a surgery for L4. But i refused it. i was 90+ kgs when i first had the pain. i took a physical teraphy, lost some weight and begun swimming. And also i saw a man from Afghanistan. That man touched my back and he found out whats wrong with my back (just as dosc told me after they see my MRI). Than the man pushed my L4 with his thumb. He pushed only one place, it was not like a massage. I felt pain after he did this and I was actually regretful for going him. Whatever, after 2 or 3 months later from my first pain and after 3 weeks I saw this Afghan man I started feeling better. I was 95% pain-free and I started playing soccer and basketball again..
2 years later, in 2018, i was juggling a soccer ball and i heard a voice 'TOCK' from my back. i went home on by walking, took my shower and than i was unable to move. I got injections for 5 days at home and with some pills i was able to stand up again. Than i saw a doctor, took an MRI. MRI showed my L5 disk is herniated. There is not a very big bubble but there are a lot of liquid went out. MRI shows my L4 is fine when its compared to 3 years earliers but now L5 was big problem. Docs again suggested surgery. I again refused. Docs said it seems my L4 got better but i screwed up the L5. I did the same things as 2016. Physical teraphy, loosing weight and swimming except the Afghan thumb pushing. From the time i had the second big pain till now, I could never got well. I cant run and I cant even walk smooth. It doesnt go away. Im getting used to living like this but im sure you know, it sucks...
So, my questions, was the thing that made me better in 2016 the Afghan thumb? I cant find him now. Or was it a coincidence? Should I give in and get the surgery? Or should I try something else more? The life is horrible with this pain never going out from my back and legs.... Im not afraid of surgery but I see a lot of people after the surgery they get the herniated disk again and again... And another question: if i get the surgery, will the disk fulfill itself with the necessary liquid or will i always be under a risk of hurting it again?
Your answers might create a small smile on this crappy face, so please dont hessitate....
    thanks a lot.

I really think you should go in for the surgery and let your nerve breathe & yourself.
Surgery would relieve the pain but yes, you're susceptible to getting a lower back pain again if you dont take care of yourself(lift heavy weights, jerks, etc). So make sure after the surgery is done, change your posture and way of life. You need to be really careful with it.
Ps: im going through the same problem and i have no more energy left in me to fight and be roombound. I want a speedy recovery and get done with this mess once and for all to lead a normal life!
I hope you get better soon, more power to you.

@@mitalim18 thanks for the suggestion and thanks for good feelings. i hope you get well after your surgery. i am still avoiding it, chinning up on a horizontal bar (not pull-up, just hanging) and continue swimming. i am not sure but i think im slowly recovering. i will get another MRI soon to see if there is some progress. You know, this can also be fixed without surgery. When will you get it Done? i wish you power and strenght more than you ever felt!!

here's several suggestions for ways to treat sciatica :
    Consider using Chiropractor Spinal Adjustments.
    Use Yoga and Stretching.
Consider using Acupuncture or Massage Therapy.
Don't site for Long Periods, Get Moving!
    Use Heat Pads.

I just watched this video, very informative, but I feel angered about how doctors here in Norway can be so slow compared to the UK? My father has been suffering from herniated disc (L4-L5) for over 3 years now, yet they have placed him on conservative treatment (physical therapy and NSAIDS) which has literally not been effective (I checked his MRI from last week and for 3 years ago, no improvement at all, even though I'm not a doctor but I do know how to read the MRI images and where the herniated disc is). How much does a surgery of herniated disc costs in the UK? Maybe I can bring him there to get him treated because I want him healthy again (and I'm tired of doctors here doing nothing).

  • @healthchannel
    @healthchannel  10 лет назад

darkknight1193 Thanks for sharing your story. It must be very frustrating if treatment takes a long time! We can imagine you are looking for alternative ways to get proper treatment for your father. We can not tell you anything about the costs in the UK. Maybe someone else who views the video or you might get info if you contact a few hospitals or insurance companies abroad? We hope you find good treatment for him! Hugs

Have had 2 spinal epidurals which didn't work...Dr. is not sure if it is the herniated disc or the spinal stonosis which is causing severe low back pain which radiates down into the right buttock. He said it could also be pieces of the disc have broken off and are compressing the nerves. Have seen a neruosergeon who said if the epidurals don't work, he would recommend surgery. REALLY don't want to have to have surgery :-(.

Hello I’m 27 years old and I got herniated disc on L4 and L5 right side. I also got central canal stenosis from the herniated disc. I’ve went through 3 months therapy and many more months of level 7-10 pain levels. I got 2 cortisol shots in the last 3 weeks and the pain levels are already increase. Do you recommend this surgery? My doctor is making me do another shot although I do know that don’t cure the stenosis at least.

Look into TMS (Dr. Sarno), it changed my life!! I was in a car accident, had such terrible pain from a herniated disc or so I thought, and the doctors, and ER, but come to find out, it was different than most doctors would ever assume, which is TMS.- also look into Dr. Sarno- he wrote about the mind body connection. If you are desperate, and trying to get out of the pain, go down this rabbit hole. It can change your life, just look into the youtube videos that are out there on it.

I prefer Neurosurgeon are best who are specialist in spine. If pain still persist then I need to go for surgery to remove that part of herniated disc which compressing the nerve by neurosurgeon.

I had a major operation since than I sit in the bed couple of hours after I woken up
I wonder that does it case lower back the way I sit? I was diagnosed with hernia as well.im getting massive lower back pains.in the morning especially I get stiffness. Yesterday I fell down in the kitchen I felt sudden pain on my lower back right side of it.i was thinking even to call 999 but after fee minutes I was managed to get up.
I wonder that I get lower back pains is it because of the way I sit in the bed and also does that cause hernia as well?
A doctor said I have got hernia on both sides and I need an surgery operation.
I'm not cynical but I live on my own if I go ahead with hernia operation than my life would be very difficult.
I also have a 3 years old toddlers I wont be able to lift him up.
I wonder that they way we sit in the bed after woken up does that cause hernia problems?
Last year I admitted to A&E twice this year one.
    For lower back problems.
    Any answer would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. X
