The World University Games, also known as Universiade internationally, is basically the Olympics for university athletes. Held since 1959, the Games switch between Summer and Winter editions, and, unlike the Olympics, are held annually. 1993 is currently the only year the Summer Universiade has been held in the United States. This here is a highlight reel of the opening ceremony (officially opened by then-president Bill Clinton), competitions, and closing ceremony produced by local CBS-affiliate WIVB-TV with commentary and interludes by the anchors at the time. The United States took home the gold with 31 gold and 73 total medals with 2nd and 3rd place going to China (17, 28) and Canada (11, 38).

I really have to say that watching this is very homey and uplifting, and not just because it's one of the few things of note that have taken place in Buffalo since the early 80's. These games take place within what I call the sweet-spot of recent history: after the end of the Cold War and dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and before the September 11th attacks and the beginning of the War on Terror. Everyone seems so happy and optimistic about there finally being a world where everyone can live in harmony. Sounds pretty stupid when you put it that way, but it feels as if worry and fear was at an all-time low. I dunno, I liked it anyway (aside from the super longass intro).

The opening ceremony was full of many surprises. Most notably the games were declared open by FISU president Nebiolo and not by the head of state, which would have been President Bill Clinton.
15:15 I recognize this song!! It's called "Eclipse" from the show "Nouvelle Experience," one of the earliest shows by Cirque du Soleil!
And even the closing ceremony had its share of surprises. I never would expected to see Rockapella there singing the theme from Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.
