Mende, people of Sierra Leone, including also a small group in Liberia; they speak a language of the Mande branch of the Niger-Congo family. The Mende grow rice as their staple crop, as well as yams and cassava. Cash crops include cocoa, ginger, peanuts (groundnuts), and palm oil and kernels. They practice shifting agriculture, with the heads of kin groups allocating land to individual households, which perform most of the work.

Greeting Family, I tested my DNA with African Ancestry a few years ago and I am 100% Mende on my maternal side of family. I do hope to find out the name of the Mende woman whom I am related too. I am excited about this information and a lot of research I still need to do and so thankful for this video. God Speed!
Hi there u are welcome to SierraLeone add me on Facebook...Aggie Fornah
@Lawrence Turner did you ever find out that information? If so, I’m curious to how.
@lawrenceturner6305 im maternally 100% Mende found out 2 days ago my moms and grandma side
African ancestry revealed that I am Mende/Temne from Sierra Leone. It all makes since because my family is from the southern USA. Us black americans are still African in more ways than we know. The white folks stole our culture and language during slavery but couldn't steal our DNA! Great video and very informative! You know your stuff brotha! You just got a new subscriber!😀
I am a Lorma ( Lona, Lorma, Toma, Buzzy ) by tribe.
Our Language is one of the many Mende speaking linguistic ethnic groups of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, and The Gambia.
We all migrated from the fallen Malian Empire in the late 1400s to 1600s.
All Mende Speaking ( diverse kinds of languages like you say, Slavic of Eastern Europe, speaking Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, etc ). Some Mende speaking tribes and ethnic groups includes the Mende, Gbandi, Lorma, Vai, Mandingo, Kpelle, Mano, and Gola ). Our music instruments will make you understand were the rich heritage of African Americans musical gifts came from.
The Poro Society is for men. It teaches young adolescents men to understand their role in the society. How to run a family. The moral codes of the tribe, etc
The Sende Society is for the women. It teaches the women the basics on how to run a home, raise their children, etc.
All Mende speaking Tribes are predominantly involved in Agriculture. Predominantly Rice cultivation, corn, Peanuts, vegetables, Palm Oil making, spices, fruits, Cassava, Eddoes, Ginger etc. Our ethnic names are similar as well.
My maternal lineage descends from the Mende & Limba of Sierra Leone.🇸🇱 My mothers side of the family were farmers from Tennille/Macon Georgia. Thanks for the info.

Sheba Newfreedom WOW CONGRATS!!!!!! THAT'S AMAZING!
Thank you & YES IT IS!!!!
Afric Network Again thanks so much for your video brother:) Maybe you or another viewer can help answer me this. I've been reading everything I can find on-line & have also ordered a book on the Malinke. When I search for Mende I do Sierra Leone, however it also says these people came from Mali and then puts them with Manding/Mandinka/Bambara/Dioula?? So I'm like is this one ethnic group with different names such as (Fulani/Fula/Fulbe) are the same ethnic group yet called different names? The Mende migrated to Sierra Leone...I'm just confused but I always said I once lived in the Sahel & every African I know has always placed me there...they are really good at placing faces:)
Sheba Newfreedom The Mande people are basically a tree and the Mende people are a branch of the tree
+Sheba Newfreedom This is what I read online as well. I remember when I was a child my mum told me her people came from Mali. I did not understand it and asked how can you come from Mali when you are Mende and part Vai from Liberia. The Malians I knew spoke Malinka or Madingo and we were never taught this in our history lessons. My step grandad was from Mali, stories went that he came to trade and got hooked by a mende woman. He never went back nor even visited Mali. He died during the war; he was quite old and the funniest thing was he could never speak the mende even though he lived mende land all his adult life. However when he spoke the malinka it was like he had never left Mali.
I found out I'm Mende of Sierra Leone on my father's side! And our family is from Georgia... thank you for this information!!!
I’m Mende on my mothers side. They are also from Georgia. If you don’t mind me asking, would you happens to be related to any Harpers or Kings?
More then likely they were gullah geechie in georgia(which were connected to mende)

Hey just found this video that you made 6 years ago.Just beautiful and i am on my way to meet the Mende tribe have been invited by a friend who is from there.I am also black-american and now excited even more after watching your video.Thank You my brother and be blessed.
my grand mother's people, they are a big tribe who are very kind and accepting of other peoples. they dominate you with kindness. when a stranger goes to a mende man's house he is given a special room. if he settles the chiefs will go out of there way to give them land and if they if they choose they will be given a wife and wives and allowed to fully integrate into their society. in such a way they absorb many strangers into their lands and build alliances with other groups like the shebro and kissi. they are the only people that can alllow members of other ethnic groups to rule over them,. THEY ARE KIND AND FANTASTIC PEOPLE
Amadu Kamara I've been married to a Mende man for almost 20 yrs and what you say is true, Mende people are the kindest people on Earth.
Nana mbaye what tribe on the Coast didn’t you dolt.

Thanks so much u are so right,we don't look less of anyone.
My Grandmother was half Geechee! Thank you for sharing this video
@Dr Reine De Ciel They are from Sierra Leone and the ethnic Group was the Mende people who were known for rice farming. When I did The MyHeritage DNA test Sierra Leone was on there. They call themselves Geechee or Gullah depending on what area they are from! My Great Grandfather was Geechee from Georgia and he was also Black Seminole which ties in with the Geechee people as well. I did another DNA test called DNA Consultants and my Seminole ancestry appeared on that test as well as other Native American markers. I already knew about the Geechee and Black Seminole ancestry through oral history! the dna tests just confirmed it. Alot of people don't know about DNA Consultants but it is a good one because it will show Native American ancestry that is hidden in Black people on other DNA test and this one does not do percentages it just shows what's in your ancestor background.
@@LionessofYah1 a lot of us Gullah Geechie do not have native american ancestry. If we do have some, then the amount is very small and insignificant. That doesn't make you native
thank you so much for sharing a little bite of my culture with others...
+Mbaindu Kemokai You are very welcome! we have to share info with all our people around the world, 1 love!

Brazilian showed up in my results when I did the DNA Consultants test. I matched in three different places in brazil! Bahia Brazil has a large population of Nigerians from the Yoruba people. I am Mende and Yoruba! It is amazing how all the dots connect in ancestry.
I did my test. I am Mede too. I live in California. I had taken a trip to Mede and the chief did give me land. I have taken a trip to Brazil, but did not know Mede was there. How can I reach them.
Awesome explanation of my people. Accurate info. My father is Mende and mum is Temne. I feel as we connect more to our ancestry, we can see the beauty amongst our brothers and sisters. It's funny you mentioned the hair being a sanctity. Quite true! Thank you.

LOL, average white guy here, I have 2% of Mende People in me. Sierra Leone? Never heard of it 'til I saw it in my report. I have 1% Libyan as well. What do i get for it? I get a nice tan in the summer LOL. I have straight brown hair and strong body with narrow hips and wide shoulders, possibly to thank them? I do like my complexion and look Southern European in appearance but an Englishman through and through for the last 4 generations.

My mtDNA is from the Mende of Sierra Leone. My ties to west Africa, including Nigeria, Togo, etc. passes through the island of Madeira. As an aside, I crew the topsail schooner Californian out of San Diego. It was used to portray the Amistad in the movie.

Are the Mende tribe Hebrew Israelites?
Garry Joseph yes
+Garry Joseph - No. The Mende people are from the Mani clan, from Kaabu region in Mali. Mendeyia Milo? I bi Juula fo? If so, you can know the similarities of Mendeyia, and Mandenka, both from Mali. There is no Hebrew. That is not true, what 'irandixon78' said.
Much appreciated for the info, can you please do a video about the Temne People
Thank you so much and i deff. will!
thank you brother 😍
You are very welcome ^_^
I am Mende, Temne, Fulani, Djola and Kru on my maternal side
Understand: It was the Mende kingdom. Under the Mende kingdom they had so many languages. Language are above 60+ in Liberia, Sierra, and Guinea we are all Mende descendants. I can’t speak of Ivory Coast because they have some Akan/Ashanti. Also, Mande is a language that came from the Mende kingdom just like the Mandingo, Susu, Limba, Vai, Lorma, Gbandi, Temme, and so on in those regions 👸🏿🤴🏿
I found out with 100% certainty that the Mende people found in SL match my maternal mtcDNA, and you look just like my nephew; the resemblance is so close you could be mistaken for brothers. Wow!
I discovered having Mende Ancestors from Sierra Leone by accident, through a DNA Test (ha ha). Thats why I watch your video. Thank you for the tip of the movie Amasta, I will check it out. ; ))
I am African American but I did research and found some ancestry from Mende people due to slavery through research
reddboned
You have to be clever, and don't listen to brain washed histories to convince you that they (whites ) are not to be blame of slavery. If mende people were involve in slavery so how comes they themselves were taken to slavery. You mean they were taking themselves to slavery? Or its the same one who were writing African histories just to clean themselves. Africans wake up and open your eyes
reddboned due to slavery or possibly due the the mendes who travelled over to america precolumbus from the mali empire
Just got my results today! I am from the Mende People!!!
Hello cousins!
African tribes in general, originate from older ancient tribes that settled in different parts of, especially, western and central Africa.
Mande, was the ancient tribe of the Mende, Madinka, Via and others. Mende people were great warriors and that's how they came to Sierra Leone.
They even called upon their ancient warrior skills during the Sierra Leone civil war of the 90s, with very little modern weapons.
Believe it or not, Mende, we know what Spiritual Powers are there and how to use them. There are dark ones! You can disbelief it because you can't see it until you experience them, the dark ones. The good ones, if you pay attention every day you will notice their manifestation.
There are reasons why we call upon the Spirits of our ancestors. There is a hint of it in the movie "Amistad". The Mende worriors together with ECOMOG, helped end the civil war in Sierra Leone. The Mende are tolerant and peaceful, just don't get them started!
Oh, the Mende love their books too - Education. The Mende love culture, agriculture but they are also known for their education.
Thank you for this information. DNA confirms almost 100% Mende lineage. Do you know if it's true Mende came into Sierra Leone led by woman general who left as Malian empire broke apart?
Hmmm is it my Mende roots that gave me my LOVE for ginger everything??
This is really nice, thanks for sharing. Another cash crop coffee, is mostly cultivated among the Mende living Sierra Leone and boarders of Liberia in the Kailahun District and groundnut is mostly cultivated on a larger scale in the north among the Temne and other northern tribes. The Poro is pronounced Pawraw (Pweh by the natives) and the Sande as Sanday (Sandei).
+Lwawa Nyaa Banya That is very true thank you so much for adding that information!
And they are well known for education
we got our research back we from mississipi and found out through the mitracondia DNA of my mother we have mende dna in our family line

What was the music in the very beginning from? What instrument flute is that called?
I just received my DNA results from AfricanAncestry on August 27th. My certificate of ancestry states that I share paternal genetic ancestry with the Balanta people living in Guinea-Bissau and the Mende people living in Sierra Leone. Question. Research also states that the Mende people of Sierra Leone are the original Hebrew people of the Bible: descendants of Abraham. Do you have knowledge of whether this is factual?
I'm Mende!
