2 Things: If you do not cover that box it will reduce the relative humidity in the immediate space surrounding it - meaning you will need much less for far more drying ability. Cover the box tightly and you can dry as many flowers with a few teaspoons full of silica. Also, to reuse the silica, just bake it in the oven for a few minutes at low temp. You will be good to reuse it quickly and efficiently. Remember, cover that box tightly and use a few teaspoons full at most for a bunch of flowers which will dry them in no time!
@@hotcraftingmamaph see the PDF file web.extension.illinois.edu/cook/downloads/9205.pdf for a list of times for various flowers. It usually is several days. There is a faster method using silica gel and a microwave which takes minutes. Google to get info on this.
I got a 5lb bag of this stuff from the 2nd-Hand store, not knowing what it really was. I figured it was either the little to put in the water to help feed the flowers for longer life... or something like this... but didn't actually know. This is really cool and so worth my $.80. Thanks for explaining it so wonderfully also.
Great description of the process. Another important point to mention would be how long to leave the drying silica process for, dependent on big, small, thick, thin... types of flowers, wether they hold a lot of water or less water therefore get them out after 3 days etc: 🌼
I'm thinking of using this method to dry roses, and then remove the petals for a flower girl to throw at a wedding. Is silica gel safe? Will it be unsafe for her to handle the petals? Thanks!
you can choose this product we have flower drying desiccant which has indicating function ,it will changes color after absorbing process completely finish www.amazon.com/Wisesorb-Indicating-Desiccant-Valentines-Anniversary/dp/B07BTJJBVN/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1526613858&sr=1-1&keywords=wisesorb+flower
Can I do this with a carnation? I got a carnation on Saturday night. It has a very long stem (about 14 inches) and it's been in water since then. I've been trimming the stem and changing the water every morning. Is it still fresh enough to do this with? It still looks great, like it was just picked but I want to do it before it starts to wilt.
I dried some roses and made a memory shadow box and then noticed days later that a spiderweb type substance had grown on them (like a fungus). Do you know how I can prevent this from ever happening again? thanks
not your fault! sunflowers are somewhat difficult to preserve as a whole flower because the petals are so small and thin (very low moisture) with an enormous thick center (high moisture) so they do not dry at a uniform rate and end up looking unattractive. i’ve never tried to use a sunflower in silica but i have pressed many sunflowers and other thick centered flowers. it’s a process lol but i remove and press petals, saw thick center in slices, and end up “reassembling” the flower petals to the center. However that method only works if you’re using your pressed flowers under a frame or with an adhesive. May or may not help lol but i at least wanted you to know you were NOT doing anything wrong
Hey there, I was wondering if this will work for Sunflowers? I was thinking of drying some sunflowers in order to display them in a shadow box. Unfortunately the air dry upside down method will not keep the 3D effect of the flower, the petals go all wrinkling :( any suggestions or tips? Cheers.
suggest use the white silica gel would be fine, because it's cheap than the orange silica gel. just keep the silica gel are dry would be fine.(To make sure the white silica gel are dry, just put a little of them into a water, and you could hear some burst,if there's no burst, you could dry your silica gel in Incubator by 60℃-80℃ )。
Why would I need to cut the stems before putting the flowers Into the silica gel? With the stem that I would have cut out, could I shove that back in along with the wire in the flower or would that look choppy and weird? Could I preserve the stems separately (cut off) along with the flowers and would that work? If i wanted to give the flowers a more natural look how could I incorporate the stem back in (if I could at all)?
Kennsie Domersan You could do a slightly different process (tedious if you have a lot of flowers), which is cutting the stem long, then pouring silica into a TALL container - tall enough to encompass the flower in its entirety. Once it's mostly full of silica, you place the stem in first, all the way until you only see the flower. Then do as this video shows - carefully cover the entire flower, cover the container, and there you go. Stem & all.
Using this method to preserve flowers seems great. How long does the effect last? could I put it in an arrangement inside a box that would last for years to come or would the flowers eventually become wilted .
Hello I have heard about this thing before but i cant find it in my place (im not living in europe) im planning to buy it in amazon but there are a lot of choices.Do u have any recomend brand?or can u teach me how to choose i nice one?like around what price? Silica gel comes in little pillow packs with cameras and lenses. You can also visit any lab that is buying microscopes, projectors or other optical stuff and ask them to give you the silica gel (they'll usually throw it away anyway).

Hello there! Thank you for this helpful video. By the way, I notice many people keep on talking about flower design program known as Flowerolign Training (do a google search), but I'm not sure if it's good. Have you considered Flowerolign Training? I have heard several amazing things about it and my cousin finally learn flower design easily, but she refuses to tell me: (

I used silica powder, it looked the same, but it set in the flowers rock hard, how do you get it off without breaking the flower?

You could always spray them with a clear coat. That way it adds an extra shield.
