Verdict Those expecting sports sedan friskiness will be disappointed, but the 5-series is a comfortable and classy executive-class sedan.
Overview
Earlier generations of the BMW 5-series set benchmarks for sports-sedan road manners that we still refer to when evaluating ride and handling. But years before the 2023 5-series arrived this model moved on to a more comfort-focused mission. BMW’s executive sedan looks upscale without being ostentatious, and that stealthy appearance provides some respite from constabulary scrutiny. And that’s a good thing, especially if you order the turbocharged inline-six 540i or twin-turbo V-8 M550i models, which can hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and 3.5 seconds, respectively. Looking for a 5-series with a more relaxed personality? The entry-level 530i and plug-in hybrid 530e, both four-cylinder-powered, offer adequate punch and also the benefit of better fuel economy. No matter the trim, the 5-series offers plenty of space for passengers and a list of luxury and technology features that keep pace with rivals such as the Audi A6, Genesis G80, and Mercedes-Benz E-class. The fiver’s handling might not be the sharpest, but it can waft down the road as effortlessly as any mid-size luxury cruiser.
What's New for 2023?
The 5-series sedan carries over to the 2023 model year largely unchanged. The optional Premium package now includes a remote-start feature but no longer includes the company’s gimmicky gesture controls for the iDrive infotainment system. The Parking Assistance package is no longer available on 530i, 530e, and 540i models but the Executive package is now available for those cars and includes a head-up display, a Harman/Kardon stereo system, a power-operated trunk lid, and heated front seats among other items. The top-spec M550i now comes with a power rear sunshade. Three new colors-Artic Race Blue, Skyscraper Grey, and Aventurin-are now available.

530i: $56,995
530e: $58,595
540i: $63,895
M550i: $82,495
The mid-range 540i continues to be the best value in the 5-series lineup, offering a nice balance of performance and comfort. This model comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available. The available Convenience package seems like a wise add-on, as it includes heated front seats and a power-operated trunk lid.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Smooth, powerful, and efficient, both the four-cylinder in the 530i and the six-cylinder in the 540i motivate this big sedan with authority. The 540i's powertrain benefits from a little extra boost, care of a 48-volt hybrid system. Each engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts intuitively and quickly, making the most of the available power. The 540i's six-cylinder is silky smooth and potent, and it makes delightful noises. Apart from the top-dog M5, which we review separately, the M550i is the athlete of the lineup, with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 under its hood. In our testing, the M550i sprinted through our acceleration runs quicker than the Audi S6 and Mercedes-AMG E53, hitting 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. All 5-series models are competent handlers, but they lack the kind of driving verve we expect from BMW. Steering feedback is light, and the ride-even in the performance-oriented M550i-appears to be tuned more for comfort than driver involvement.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Rich appointments and good design make the cockpit of the 5-series a civilized space. It's a noticeable upgrade compared with the somewhat drab cabin of its predecessor. It's also spacious for rear-seat passengers and features an impressive amount of technology. We've experienced the optional 20-way multi-contour front seats, which adjust in every way imaginable and provide hours of comfort. The standard seats might not be as indulgent, but you can still adjust them in 16 ways. The BMW's large trunk space is on par with what its competitors offer, fitting six carry-on suitcases back there. That said, the cabin is lacking in cubbies and storage compartments. To accommodate the battery pack, the plug-in-hybrid 530e has four fewer cubic feet of trunk space than nonhybrid models and swallows two fewer carry-on suitcases, but at least it retains its folding rear seats, unlike many other hybrids.

What a beautiful dash. I've been hating on some new cars that just have a sideways Ipad for the speedometer cluster and another vertical Ipad for the center cluster. This one does it right

The best and most beautiful 5 series. I wish BMW will not touch it at least 5 years from now, because it only ruined the latest models: 7 series, x7, x5, 4 series are pieces of crap.

Unfortunately they didn’t 😔 new 5series went the same way as other new BMW models. Just ok outside and crappy cheap interior with stupid LCD panels all over! This is the last car that I can call true BMW where already I’m having a problem with complete LCD driver display. Pre LCI G30 had the best combination out of two worlds.
Anyways… I owned BMWs for the last 17 years and this one that I actually own is my last one. It’s the end of my journey with BMW cars. Glad that there is still BMW Motorrad. Hopefully they won’t drop their ball just like their car buddies 🤷🏻♂️

Covering the key fobs with Saran Wrap is a great idea. Manufacturers have been painting the fobs the same color as the car or brakes and fobs scratch very easy due to being put in pockets. 👍

BMW seems getting cheaper instead of being luxurious by keeping the roof and other interior black, common across all their models instead of giving us same color as our leather upholstery. Black interior & roof seems to give a less spacious feel even for bigger cars!
And it all went downhill from here.
The new S-Class and almost all of BMW's latest lineup, from the 3, 5 and 7 Series, as well as the X Series, if fucked up and fugly af.

Always been BMW, but the designs have become uglier with each new generation. This 5 series cannot compete with mercedes e class 2024
First of all, no matter Mercedes, BMW or Audi, since 2017 the production has not been as solid and valuable as it used to be. The profit margins of the car manufacturers are no longer there, which is why more and more cheap supplies from Asia are being used. The main thing is that it looks nice and expensive;-) For example, I've been driving a BMW 5 Touring for around 18 years, the F11 was built to be much more valuable, the premium seats, doors, driving noise, etc. were better, you had more haptics. Even though the G31 is now a good 100KG lighter and consumes 1-1,5 liter/100KM less, I thought to myself, I wasn't sitting in a 5-series G31, but felt in a well-equipped Mercedes C-Class, sorry!! The door sound when closing, the rather thin steering wheel, all the plastic, especially the wobbly buttons and knobs, finally the creaking of the interior after around 3 years, etc. That was not the case with the F11, which for me is probably the best BMW 5 generation. In relation to this, Audi will build even more valuable A6 models from 2018 (a friend of mine owns an A6), Mercedes is somewhere in between. The car manufacturers want to distract/inspire us from the processing (ok, some of the engines have gotten better, as well as certain design lines) with futuristic ambilight designs and assistance systems, as autonomous driving still needs many, many years of development. Finally, the car manufacturers demand horrible amounts for spare parts, and a mechanic's hour in Europe at BMW is EUR 160.- excl. VAT!!!! But they are not engineers, rather average mechanics, some with very little knowledge of their own cars! (So it has happened to me a few times that it was doctored around, especially with a defective assistance system) My next car will probably be an Audi A6. Good luck!
I liked the looks of A6, but BMW 5 has physical knobs and buttons, no touchscreen. But the worst part was the gearbox. SO MUCH LAG IN AUDI! When you start, lift you foot from the brake, press the accelerator, and NOTHING HAPPENS. Then, it starts. But, if you press harder... It will jump forward.

Honestly? I am a fan of BMW, but for several years I have been observing that cars from the inside are simply boring, yes, maybe aesthetic, but simply boring. It's a terrible simplicity to them. Yes, they have a nice body compared to the competition, but inside they are incredibly boring and, on the example of the cockpit, even ugly. I believe that it is not fitting for a brand such as BMW to design such boring and even cheap interior elements. An example is the latest 5 series. But so are the smaller series. Is it because of savings? Although technically and in terms of reliability it is good. I have a series 3 myself and when it comes to exploitation, it's good.
