    5:10 Some programs require the Gravis Ultrasound drivers in C:\ULTRASND before they'll talk to the card, especially if they intend to play music through it as well (ULTRAMID). Others expect the card to exist in an initialized state (as if having run ULTRINIT) which DOSBox SVN and other forks don't necessarily have the card in at startup, while DOSBox-X has a dosbox.conf option to prepare the card in that state.

    I 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 this game in the mid-nineties!! 🥰 It didn't come close to Descent, but it had its own charm with the Fake-3D engine, and it really felt like you were flying through DOOM maps in a spaceship. It was a damn fun trip through the 3 episodes and I was glad I didn't let the rather negative reviews at the time influence me.
    The homage in the first Radix level to E1M1 from Doom 1 was also very cool (hangar room). 😄👍
    My absolute highlight, however, was the soundtrack - the music was 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗹𝘆 hard rocking and A HIT in every stage. I still like to listen to it in between. ☺

    Yes! Radix time! I love how you pronounce 'Radix'. I say it completely differently! The 2.0 patch plugged into the RAD source port/engine replacement is a much smoother experience with better framerates and widescreen, making for a very entertaining shooter! Give it a go, random people reading this!

  • @timixretroplays
    @timixretroplays Год назад +4

    Great review! Glad I could contribute.
    Maybe the Terminal Velocity poster was a bragging thing about getting the rights to everything - both CDV copies of Radix had the same poster in it, so it definitely wasn't an unintentional inclusion by the seller. I was tempted by the Manaccom box as a piece of Aussie memorabilia, but decided two copies were enough for me!
    I'm both impressed and surprised you stuck with v1 for the playthrough - the v2.0 remix has so many quality-of-life improvements that I don't think I'd ever go back and stick it out with the original. It's definitely not hard to find online, and Radix auf Deutsche not upgrading to it seems like an oversight on the publisher's part more than anything else, so with a physical copy in hand I wouldn't blink at getting 2.0 anyway.

    CDV was also the original German publisher for Doom I and II. It's not all that wild considering that gaming hadn't yet reached its current state of multinational conglomeration and lots of publishing deals were still made on a territory-by-territory basis. CD Projekt was once the Polish publisher for Blizzard, Psygnosis, Interplay, Bethesda, and Activision, among many others; in Japan Imagineer handled titles from id, EA, Maxis, Sierra, Infogrames, etc. Heck, even in the U.S. you had GT releasing the registered versions of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake at retail within a few months of each other.

    Oh boy, that FOV might be as low as 60. This is really a pet peeve of mine, even though I tend not to get motion sickness from it. I wonder if the 2.0 remix fixes the collision bug with the V shaped slope gaps.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  Год назад

      Not sure about the collision thing, but I don't think the FOV is THAT low. I use a variety of tricks to attempt to measure FOV, but to get really precise I kinda need to be able to stay perfectly still, which can't happen here, thus my best estimate from intentionally trying to analyze it was somewhere between 65 and 70, so it's not "terrible" but it's also not good. :P

    • @BSzili
      @BSzili Год назад +1

      @@Pixelmusement Fair enough. I only eyeballed it, so it probably just felt worse that it really is. Out of curiosity what tricks do you use to measure the FOV? Perhaps the 2.0 version could be used for this, since you are not moving constantly forward in it.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  Год назад +2

      Good call! That let me measure it exactly and... it's EXACTLY 60 degrees! As for my methods, it depends on the game but what I typically try to do is find a straight-line point of reference of some sort which has a definite end, either a line on an automap or in the floor, centre myself over it,. then slowly turn until the other end of that line (or whatever it represents) is just touching the side of the screen, then measure the resulting angle and double it. With an automap this is easy because I can use a screenshot combined with basic vector-drawing software like Inkscape to do the job, but for references on the floor I have to get a bit more creative in calculating the angle based on the repetition of textures and such, which is how I did it for my Depth Dwellers review. :B

    This always looked neat to me.... once I found out it existed, lol. I still gotta give it a try, but my stack of retro FPS titles is just too high at the moment, and it's not like I don't _really like_ games such as STRIFE or Eradicator (now _there's_ one not nearly enough people talk about! But I digress...), so I should probably get around to tackling that ol' backlog.
    At any rate, looking at PC game Game Boy Color Ports? Well, I know Torus Games' Duke Nukem on the GBC was pretty darn good... I guess it's a port of Duke 2. Daikatana has a great lil' GBC port, though I'm not sure Daikatana counts as DOS - still worth a look! Epic Megagames and 3D Realms/Apogee were the most fierce rivals of the PC market back in the 90s. Epic would boast about how they had the better graphics and soundtrack and how they were more with the times, but Apogee usually had the advantage of better gameplay, and Terminal Velocity had the overall advantage over Radix when it came to pretty much all of those things. Nowadays Apogee has a lot more respect for their past and their players than Epic clearly does, with a few remasters and some indie titles inspired by the good old days of gaming (even if they seem like mostly shooters), while Epic is all about modern trends and shady practices, while having their own game client that's inferior to Steam in a lot of ways, but has inspired Valve to actually improve their service which people had been complaining about for some time.
    With all that said, a flyer for a 3D Realms game in a game published by Epic really is an ironic moment in game marketing, especially when it's 3D Realms main competitor for Epic's game in question.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  Год назад

      The trick of course was that Apogee and Epic were trying to sell their games worldwide, thus had numerous third-party distributors to help handle that... and by chance, one of those distributors in Germany managed to get in with BOTH companies! :B

      It's hard to see in the footage, but that "wall" was actually made up of a bunch of square sectors with their floor and ceiling heights joined at various different heights, each opening up in a seemingly random sequence at high speed once I got close. I enjoy your videos, but one thing that strikes me about them is that you're focused on judging the games you cover as they were officially released. I can see the advantage of this, particularly as it can help limit scope to something more manageable, but one of the more interesting aspects of PC games is that even in their time there was a myriad of different ways that they were experienced. Different hardware setups affecting gameplay features and visuals,unofficial patches, user hacks and mods, even the cracks and warez releases are just as much a part of the games history as the original, untouched releases. Growing up in the 90s with a PC, all that ephemera was a big part of my experience. In the 90s alone I played more Doom using unofficial source ports compared to the original executable.
    You briefly covered the other major variation of the game to an extent (I would have liked a bit more of an in-depth comparison) I think it would be nice to also throw a bone to fan works both historic and modern in summaries like this. Not a demand or anything, it's your show! But Radix has a modern reverse engineered source port of good quality that is the "best", if not "authentic" way to play the game. For anyone interested in trying the game out, I think it'd be useful to know about it.
    Or maybe it could be a spinoff show :)
