Ah it's a relief to see an artist doing something that has a unique style and creativity. So bored of seeing flowers, vibrant neon portraits, and highly faded landscapes that seems to predominate the search results when I type "watercolor painting" into youtube. You have a fantastic understanding of textures and depth of field. This painting really embodies what one might call Sprezzatura. I'd buy that painting if I saw it in a local gallery, keep it up!
I agree. A lot of teachers, and students as well, stick to strict rules. I think one needs not to be afraid of breaking them sometimes and should experiment with colours, compositions, his/her own imagination and emotions in order to find own style of expression. After having seen only two of your videos I know I am going to use not only acrylic and oil but also watercolours starting already tomorrow. Thanks for the beautiful inspiration, Stephen. You just gained another happy subscriber.
It makes you wonder how the world got on before the invention of the internet. It still amazes me how everyone can interact instantly around the world with no delay. I wish you the best of luck with your painting. It will take a bit of practise but stick with it and you'll get your rewards.
Good morning Mr. Cronin. Thank you for your words, you can believe that I am learning a lot from you. The way you paint and your expressiveness are absolutely incredible. You talk with us, you show the colors you prefer, you show the brushes, even the noise of the hairdryer!...all these familiar things are doing part of my daily life. Thank you once again for your wonderful classes.
I can't believe you did that in 15 minutes. Insane! it would have taken me 2 weeks and suck too. But I'll get better with the help of generous artists like you. Thanks.
Many thanks Mr. Cronin. You have been so kind to share such technique with watercolour aspirants like us. Aside being very educative, these videos are very inspiring as well. Thanks very much, Partha.
Blue, pale grey, yellowish colors for the sky and some trees short and tall in the distance. Darker trees on previous ones left hand side as well as a big dark tree with large branches It's beautiful Steven because it makes a contrast with everything around which has a pale color. Lovely land for this dark tree with some dark banks. A small land on right hand side with thin dark trunks and branches. This land on the right side goes down to form a foreground with small tiny trunks on. Nice reflections for trees on both sides. Nice pastel colors reflect beautifully on river. Beautiful realization which is far better than the photograph. Thank you Steven for this wonderful video.
Thanks for sharing your expertise. I am a beginner and have invested some money in watercolors. Now I just gotta figure out how to to work these damn things. Thanks for your help in simplifying and walking me through some basic steps. With your help I might actually make something half decent. It's amazing that in the present we can find a great teacher from overseas that gives us FREE lessons and we never even meet personally. I imagine you help thousands of unkown people. I subscribed
Watched this video several times and will probably watch it several more times until I paint it. You took a dull photograph and turned it into a beautiful painting. Magnifico
It all seems like controlled chaos to me, and I am in awe. We started water colors last week in my drawing course at the community college here, and I've just been utterly perplexed in my journey into painting in general. You've done a great service to me, with this here video, and helped me in that journey more than you might ever know. Loads of thanks mate.
Thanks for sharing your realistic and relaxed approach to watercolour painting. Excellent, and refreshing to listen to your accent after 20 years out of the UK!
I don't do water colour of any kind as I am gifted in singing but I am completely mesmerized by everything Steven Cronin puts his hands on. He is brilliant to watch and I could literally observe his genious and masterful work all day and and all night long. He is overwhelmingly talented and I adore him and the pleasure he brings to others through his special gifts.
One of the most helpful videos I've watched so far! I love how you let the paint be unashamedly watercolor, no tidying up or "mistakes." Really great work.
A nice blue color for the sky. Some small trees in the distance and on left hand side some bigger dark trees. A big dark tree on left hand side with some tiny branches and a pretty land which changes completely the aspect of this landscape adding beauty. Another small land on right hand side with a tiny dark tree as well as a nice foreground with tiny grasses. The nice pale blue of sky reflects beautifully on water. Nice reflections of both trees. Fabulous. Like you said the reflections make this scene more realistic. This is a lovely painting Steven and I thank you for this wonderful teaching and all demos with big brush and rigger.
I believe artists are highly critical of their own work, no matter what stage/level of ability they are currently at. I agree with you 100% Steve. We should strive to be happy with our current ability while always pushing forward and practicing to improve. I know when I look back over my drawings & paintings I am very happy to see how they have improved over time. Being 100% self taught I am thrilled that I have achieved the level of artist that I am.
It comes with practise. I was tight as a beginner like most others but with experience you naturally learn to loosen up and paint with more freedom. Keep practising and you'll get there. Best of luck.
Just a few words Steven to let you know that I am looking at this video once more and I notice now that the river goes until the small trees in the distance and turns right behind the small land on right hand side. This view is beautiful as well as this lovely painting. I thank you Steven for all these wonderful teachings and demos. You are of great help to all of us.
I just happened upon your vids. I am a learner. I am so amazed at how simple you make it all seem. Love your work. Thank you for posting and being generous with your amazing art.
Thanks Steve. I didn't know you were self taught as well. Awesome! That's probably one of the reasons I gravitate towards your instruction so much. You know how hard it is to find decent instruction for someone who is teaching themselves, as you stated in another post response to me. I have even more respect for you than I had before. Keep up the awesome teaching videos. You have really hit your mark on doing that. I may explore other artist's videos to check out their style & teaching
I too used to sketch some simple guidelines before I started. After a while I felt I could just do without them and go straight at it. Keep trying and you'll get the hang of it. Don't worry about making mistakes, just turn the paper over. Best of luck and happy painting!
Another fantastic painting Steve! As always you take the time to point out all the subtleties that many other artists take for granted when beginner artists are watching the video. Well done! I thoroughly enjoy all your videos/paintings. Please keep up the great work!
I tried your pictures by myself and it was so easy to draw them, because of your presentation! I love your videos and also all my friends say that your pictures are incredible !
What a great composition, you painted it with an lovely sense of depth and perspective, thanks for sharing such a great demonstration Steve, really finding your comments so helpful in my own painting efforts
tips however, I always continue with your videos as my "staple" watercolor guide. I just wanted you to know how really valuable your videos are to me and I'm sure many, many, other folks who are trying to figure it out on their own. You have also given my new goals to strive for. I mean look at you. You are self taught and now have a hugely successful you tube channel, ebay store, and following of students & fans. I would love to achieve something similar in time. Keep up the GREAT WORK!
Beautiful pastel colors for the sky. Some small trees in the distance on the right hand side and taller and bigger ones on left hand side. Beautiful tall big dark trees on left hand side with small branches. This grey and dark colors are fabulous for the small land. Small dark trees on right hand side and some branches with rigger explaining how to handle it which is an interesting demo. Very nice land and foreground on right hand side with a few tiny short trees. The trees have beautiful reflections and the lovely colors of the sky reflect wonderfully on sea. By the way your painting is much much better than the photograph and I thank you for this wonderful teaching and demo.
lovely work and yes I agree the painting is much much nicer than the photograph - I know where I'd rather live in the painting thanks again for a great demo
Steven, I'm a painter (primarily oil) but have wanted to get back into watercolor for years and this single video has shown me more information and technique than any book or other vids combined. Thank you for sharing so much.
I love painting seascapes in oil, primarily surf and rocks...wow am I stuck on how to capture it in watercolor. Because I really want to do more quick studies out en plain air. Do you have surf scenes on video Steve?
GahDub the only one I can think of is a video I made in the car whilst on Brean beach. I did a very simple impression of the sea. Unfortunately I can't remember what it's called but it's in the archives on here somewhere.
Fascinating to watch. I love watercolor and am still a bit of a newbie. You turned that photo into a very soft and beautiful scene reminiscent of my grandparents' property in the 1950s when I was a child.
You do a great job of transforming Birmingham in your great paintings, We came back for a visit to Studley and came up to the bull centre, WOW still could use a face lift especially Birmingham Road, Glad we have you to show some of the local beauty spots in your paintings.. good job.
Dear Steven, Your video is absolutely wonderfiul - one of the best I have watched. I am only an amateur, trying to learn watercolour after very stressful job in my high-responsibility position. Watercolour is a truly safe heaven for me and this video gave me a brillian lesson - I have learned a lot! Thank you and every luck with your work - look forward for more!
Beautiful colors for the sky Steven. Small trees in the distance and a large one on left hand side with two big dark ones just in front. Very interesting demo with your brush for the branches. A nice grey land for these big trees with some dark banks. Small land on right hand side with tiny trees and branches using the rigger. Very instructive demo. This small land goes down to form a nice foreground and gives a beautiful shape to the river. Interesting reflections for land and trees on both sides. Beautiful colors of sky reflect on river in a lovely way. Thank you Steven for this wonderful painting, demos as well as the birds which bring movement and more life to this beautiful scene. By the way Steven, your painting is much better than the photograph.
Thanks for your support Maria. To be honest, I'm not sure how useful attending an art class would have been for me. Most of the teachings I have seen are traditional methods that frankly bore me senseless. It wasn't until I saw the fast and loose technique of Ron Ranson, the easy going presentation of Frank Clarke and the soothing tones of Bob Ross that I caught the painting bug. Best of luck with your painting.
I just recently started using watercolour, and more often than not, I end up making a mess - and not in a good way. Compared to graphite and ink, which I've been using for years, I find watercolour really difficult to control. It's incredibly encouraging to witness the work of someone who truly knows what he's doing. I'll continue watching your videos, and hope to learn more from you! :) Many thanks!

As you say Maria, constructive criticism of your own work keeps us on our toes and continually striving to improve. Anything is possible is you want it enough but we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves. I too am self taught and learned by watching DVDs.
Just a little ground on the left side for theses nice trees. Beautiful. Another small ground on the right side for this small trees which continues until the front. Beautiful Steven. Wish I could find these beautiful spots here but what you see now are only constructions of buildings everywhere. Very sad. Your painting is much better than the photograph. Thank you so much for this beautiful painting and as usual your interesting demo.
+Mireille Romain I live in an industrial city and used to think I would never be able to find spots like this. But I think if we look hard enough we can find Beauty in most places.

This is first "river" video that i could actually see the water form...thank you
cheers Robin

The painting is a lot more beautiful than the actual photo. You make watelcolor painting seem pretty easy to do. You are a hell of a monster painter!

Thanks for showing that. It's wonderful. Looking forward to seeing more and practising.
