  • Drosophyllum lusitanicum (Drosophyllaceae) is a carnivorous plant species endemic to the herriza or Mediterranean heathland from the southwestern Iberian Peninsula and northwestern tip of Africa, with the Strait of Gibraltar region harbouring the highest density of populations. It is a rare species from the geographic, ecological, and taxonomic points of view, being the herriza’s plant uniqueness paradigm. This documentary, made by the FEBIMED research group (RNM923; www.febimed.org) from the University of Cádiz, illustrates the ecology of this outstanding, unique species but, surprisingly, ignored by the majority of society.

I grew over 50 species of drosera but this beautiful plant still is elusive to me. I had two seeds and one germinated but then it died shortly after. I really would like to successfully grow it again to maturity, it is a beautiful carni species!

Hey, thanks for the great video on Drosophyllum! This is the first I've heard about the prey/pollinator-selective scents which are fascinating.
I've also read that this plant differs from Drosera in its trapping process. Drosera primarily kills by exhausting the prey, while Drosophyllum instead suffocates the insect by clogging its spiracles.
Is this true? I see it written all over the internet, but the only primary source I could find for this claim is in here: Hewitt-Cooper, N. 2012. Drosophyllum lusitanicum L.. Carnivorous Plant Newsletter 41(4): 143-145. My googling skills are only novice. Do you happen to know any other publications that talk about this?

It does it thanks to the high of free sugars in the mucilage. Lubomír Adamec already noted and mentioned this apparent ability of Drosophyllum (Adamec 2009: Carnivorous Plant NewsLetter 38, 71-74).
