"Backwards" and the correct way to do things are defined by the culture in question. The US is backwards to Japan and vice versa. It takes time to get used to, trust me. :)
You lived in Tokyo for about 20 years? May I ask you two question? Does it cost alot to travel to Tokyo (for about two weeks)? And are you a permanent resident? ^0^

it would be more expensiv cause 1. you have to pay double first for the car and second for the Fuel 2. you are much faster with he Subway than with the car cause tokyo streets have many traffic. i hope i could helped you a bit.
not really:) there are English signs! You may feel that the streets are so narrow but You should't have any problem！ Rent-a-car places should offer a GPS sysytem in English as well:) Enjoy your stay in Tokyo!!
The ex-colonies all drive on the left just like Britain. Japan is the only unrelated E. Asian country that also does so. China (excluding the special regions) & Korea drive on the right.
It all depends on how much confortabel your hotel shoudt be. If you say confort is not so important you can check in a hostle so you save a lot of money. about 1600$ woudt be cost a cheap travel to tokio (Pocketmoney not included this shoudt be 1500$ tokio st expensiv ;) )
