    I personally have no objection to the term Lunar New Year, as the lunar calendar itself originated in China. However, it is unacceptable to deliberately obscure or downplay its Chinese roots, because the festival you celebrate is fundamentally derived from Chinese New Year, so happy Chinese new year everyone

  • @yaya-nw4ic
    @yaya-nw4ic День назад +11

    The term Lunar New Year is wrong because 1) the festival is based on a lunar-solaris calendar, not a lunar calendar. 2) Both the calendar and the festival are Chinese. Other countries are celebrating it too, I hear you say? But no, it's still Chinese New Year. Because you see, just because your language is using the alphabet Doesn't mean we should stop calling them Roman letters. Same logic applies to the Chinese New Year.

    Regarding cultural misappropriation and plagiarism, let me make this clear: Don‘t believe that you can disguise your actions as political correctness and simply rename festivals that belong to others. Such behavior only reveals your insecurity and ignorance. Our rich culture won’t fade away because of your shameless imitation. Instead, it highlights your lack of originality.

      You've got it backwards. Westerners have called it Chinese New Year because the holiday has largely been associated with China, but China isn't the only place that uses this calendar, which you can see in the video. It's a part of a variety of cultures, all using the same or similar calendar. Hence, Lunar New Year, though westerners are less familiar with the latter name.

    - Many people mistakenly believe that Tết (Tet Nguyen Dan/TET HOLIDAY/VietNamese New Year) originates from China. But that is completely wrong. Tết originates from Southeast Asian countries, specifically from branches of the ancient Bách Việt ( 100 VIET/100 Yue) tribe. In ancient times, the Han Chinese (Huaxia people) attacked the Bách Việt and pushed them south. This led to the formation of smaller branches, creating countries like Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Northern Indonesia, North Philippines, Southern Malaysia, and Southeast Myanmar. When China invaded Vietnam and northern Laos, they learned about the Tết festival from here. Later, they named it "Spring China Festival" and appropriated the festival from Southeast Asian and East Asian countries, calling it "Chinese New Year".
    - In fact, the calendars of Southeast Asia and China are completely different. Vietnamese New Year is Vietnamese New Year. Chinese New Year is Chinese New Year. We are DIFFERENT. For example, in Vietnam, we use the CAN CHI calendar, which is a combination of both the sun and the moon. Meanwhile, China uses the lunar calendar, based solely on the moon. In 1968, we celebrated Tết two months before China. In 1989, we celebrated Tết one month before China. In 2014, we celebrated Tết three days before China.
    - We, Southeast Asians, take pride in our identity. We don’t need to adopt China’s name, especially when China itself learned from us and claimed it as their own. We can absolutely call it "LUNAR NEW YEAR" to refer to the entire Southeast Asia.
