Good video! Thank you! A little tip, from me, to cure the cracking problem on porcelain insulation
pieces: Remove the holding screws and insert small and soft copper washers under the screw heads, which take some of the heat away but more importantly, the hard pressure from the screw heads
    on the insulation pieces.

I loved watching this. It makes me appreciate my pfaff 1212 that I got from my mom. It's always been around in my life so it seems like no big deal but the fact that it's still going strong and serving me well is pretty cool :) I do miss that old style peddle though

Thank you. Loved seeing and hearing a well produced machine. I have a mix and have found the plastics on early European machines was not all that stable. One exception is my 70s Viking. Berninas , Pfaffs and Elnas all seem to be subject to this degrading. A note to readers of the comments. Necchi BU and Singer 201are humming along making facemasks. Thanks again

Only light weight garment leather using a leather tipped needle. Any dense heavy leather could damage a home sewing machine. For those leathers, an industrial Walking Foot machine would be preferable.

Just subscribed to your videos! I have a Pfaff 78 and 79. I bought 79 for parts for 78, but I love them both. The presser bar lifter on 78 is loose and I can’t lift it anymore. I’m thinking that Pfaff started to introduce plastic parts because both of these were built in 1969. The presser bar lifter is made of plastic and I need to find who can help me fix this part. It’s just comes off, and needs tightening.

I just recieved a 79. I have it open right now. It's so stiff. The bobbin winding clutch is cracked too. Its plastic like you were saying.
Do you sew with your 78 or 79?

Was wondering if you could help me. Someone borrowed this machine from me so I cannot describe exactly what is missing or has gone wrong. Problem-my stop motion knob (missing the cap) and balance wheel are not functioning as they were designed to. I took off the top (lid) of the machine to expose the inside parts but can't figure out how the balance wheel and stop motion knob and possibly the cap are suppose to go together. I can assemble them but nothing stops the wheel from falling off and keeping the latch hook to engage the sewing machine.

Hi! Thank you for your informative video! I love all your videos! I have a Pfaff 1197 machine and when I press down the foot controller as far as it will go, it only gives enough power to work the machine at a slow pace. It seems to run steady, just very slow (kind of like a Sunday afternoon at the park LOL). I opened it up and cleaned and polished all the copper conducting pieces because they were very tarnished and even sanded off some corrosion on one of the pieces. I then I gently angled the copper connection areas just a little to make sure that when the foot is pressed down, that it is actually creating a connection. The only thing I did not do was mess with the wires wrapped around the porcelain or the battery/motor in the corner. I closed up the foot and tested and alas, same issue. I do not know what could be causing this issue? I was wondering whether you might have any ideas as to what could be causing this? If the pedal is too far gone, I was thinking to do what you did and get a generic replacement electronic foot controller to attach my cord to (Cord is in very good shape). Could you please share what the brand/model of electronic foot controller was that you purchased? Thanking in advance!

Hello Careen. While there are lots of potential causes for the symptoms you describe with your Pfaff, might I suggest you first check the owners manual to see if your model had a feature somewhat common on European branded machines from this era. Many came with an electronic setup that allowed the motor to run at regular speed as well as a slower speed (very useful for more power over heavier fabrics). Necchi and some other brands offered this and your Pfaff may have as well. If that is not the issue, I would take your machine to a local Sewing/Vacuum center to see if they can test the electrical functioning of your foot pedal and cord. They might need replacing but check my first suggestion to eliminate that as a potential cause first.

@@VintageSewingMachineGarage This machine was a thrift shop find and did not come with its manual but I have looked online for one and although it referenced this feature you're speaking of on some other models, I don't think it's was available for my particular model unfortunately. When I looked at my pedal I did not see any option to adjust the speed in the area specified on some models. Sounds like a cool feature though and that would have been an easy fix! But I am happy to share that with continued use of the machine it seems to have sped up a bit. Although I had lubricated the machine well prior, maybe just the fact that it had been not in use for so long, caused the whole machine to slow down and it's happy to be in use again and it needed some time to fully come back to life!
Thanks for your reply and assistance!
