    looks like fun, not my fav type of aircraft, but if it can work well and is simple, can;t argue with it. Success is always good, and wish you lots of it this coming year, Mr. iforce2d!!

    something to think about, when i need to gouge out foam for equipment I made a tool out of a piece of conduit that i cut in half then notched the half so it could bend kinda like a spoon, sharpened the end then i heat the spoon end so it just glides through the foam, the big advantage is the surface of the foam it leaves behind has been melted, sealed and hardened making it probably twice a strong as foam that has just been gouged out without heat......

    @ 5:20 you say about wing adhering to the fuse....... Just a thought on using short lengths of the bamboo bbq sticks (about 4mm dia) pushed in to make a hole, then followed up by pulling out again and apply epoxy and refit.
    Sort of bamboo nail if you like.
    Currently looking at using some of the foam board as used in Flite Test stuff for reinforcing in the building foam.
    Surfaces need to be reasonably flat and sheet could be applied on edge as well if necessary and with paper still in place.
    Difficult to find in some places but just found some 600 x 420 x 5 mm sheets at Choice Shop in Aus.($4.00)

    This is very cool. Yes it does look like a nano goblin (which is an excellent aircraft) but your build is considerably cheaper! The nano goblins are very expensive for what they are

    For the wing to fuselage joint you didn't love, you could use vertical tabs slotted and glued. Guitar picks roughed up, SIG style easy hinges used vertically or simply thin plywood glued in position works well.

    I wonder if iforce2d will find some stiff narrow-guage stainless wire? Run current through it and it heats up like nichrome, but unlike nichrome it stays plenty stiff. Can make loop or box shapes mounted to a stick, should work for hogging out internal cavities without the mess of the drilling/router on foam.

    Your using the 18650 batteries more often. I have also been playing with those. I ordered a small electronic load to discharge them... whoops the cheep ass quad charger has a discharge function. Working on a graceful way to make a 3S that actually charges correctly.

    Where you are planning to put your 2s pack is exactly where my 2s1p pack is on my Nano Goblin. This should fly pretty good Chris! I'm tinkering with the idea of putting a Crossfire Rx in mine and make it long range. Let's see the effing FAA try to stop me from flying that one.

    Very nice little build :D , 18650 are definitely the way forward ( unless some LIPO miracle happens) For adding a little strength to that small bead Orange insulation foam( the battery bay) , craft type tissue paper and watered down floor varnish adds a fair bit or strength for very little weight.

      Actually, with your synergistic skills... I wonder if it's possible to use a multirotor to precisely measure the ground elevation along a particular path, and then do a terrain-following mission with a plane, or as mentioned above with multiple planes. I can only imagine that lower would look more impressive, especially with the rolling hills you've got immediate access to.

    • @iforce2d

      I used this airfoil on a previous plane and it seemed to do ok, so I just reused it. I don't recall if there was anything special about it that made me use it last time, I think I just found it here and didn't know any reason not to try it: airfoiltools.com/airfoil/details?airfoil=mh64-il

      @@mbainrot Think you'll find many of these building insulation materials are being withdrawn as they are now considered to be a "fire risk".
      Parents had their house clad some 30 years ago with colourbonded aluminium and foam insulation combined.
      Even though, at the time, it was tested to be fire retarded, now considered fire risk by the "experts" and we all know the definition of an expert.

      The CG needs to be about 15% from the front of the wing, very difficult to do with just a wing only. The fuselage also gives you somewhere to put the electronics.

  • @utubeaccess7
    @utubeaccess7 5 лет назад

    You keep getting so close to epic designs, but you always fail right at the end. You model a great airframe, build it out and wonder why it's too heavy. Use the build as a mold and construct the thing from hollow composites.

    • @utubeaccess7
      @utubeaccess7 5 лет назад

      Get rid of all that foam! Geez.

    • @utubeaccess7
      @utubeaccess7 5 лет назад

      The foam is doubling the weight..

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  5 лет назад +1

      No, the foam does not double the weight. Packing tape over foam is generally lighter than hollow composites would be at this scale, for the same structural strength. Plus it's an order of magnitude quicker, cheaper and easier to build.

    • @lienmeat
      @lienmeat Год назад

      I guess you've not seen any modern rc planes? Foam rc planes are VERY common and certain foams are extremely lightweight and durable. It doesn't need to be hollow to be light.
