    Listen to Corona Queen here: (will be released next week)
    A Malice Mizer video in 2021. That's right. Malice Mizer is a band that has been recommended on this channel for a number of years. I've been holding off on a video of them for awhile. I thought a Musician Spotlight wouldn't exactly work for this band since most of the information on them is speculative and their band leader, Mana, typically liked to keep to himself. Mana would often not even talk in interviews and he's never revealed his true identity to people. I didn't feel right making a video about who he is. Also their long song titles, use of French and other languages would mean a lot of their work is hard to pronounce. Join me on this long adventure while I listen and grade EVERY Malice Mizer song.

    The fact people are still talking about MM in 2021 fills my heart with inexplicable joy - thank you so much for giving us this project, it’s a big undertaking and you did an amazing job with it. Without a doubt my favourite band of all time bar none - totally subbing to this channel - kudos x

    This was amazing, thank you so much. It makes me so happy to see people still listening to and talking about MM. I even still see people discussing where Klaha went when he dissapeard. Rumor has it he's taken up multiple different jobs, such as car washer, convince store cashier, kindergarten teacher and banker. Others say he lies under an old church in his vampire coffin waiting for a young maiden to awake him from his eternal sleep with a kiss xD

      I can honestly see him as a private voice instructor or something. Usually what happens when a musician quits the music scene.
      Apparently I heard some more rumors that there is a money issue with the royalties(idk if true)...and when that comes into play, Klaha would probably make more money as a voice instructor and any studio would hire him with Malice Mizer as his resume.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Awesome work on doing such an in-depth analysis for this band in 2021. If you want more Tetsu, they had a demo in 1992 named "Sans Logique". The song "Sadness" is an A+ song in my opinion, even if the sound quality is rough as hell.

    I’m not too sure if you’ve been told yet since this video did come out a year ago, but there are 3 other songs (from my knowledge) that Tetsu sang for Malice Mizer. The songs are, Lafflesia composed by Mana, SADNESS~I know the reason for her sadness~ composed by Közi, and SPEED OF DESPRATE which was also composed by Mana. They could’ve been mentioned in the video and I didn’t catch it though.

      Yes, he's already been told. And there are more songs from the Tetsu era than just the ones you mentioned: Freeze Me, Portugal, Hakuchû no Waltz, Shôjo no Hitomi, 16 no Solitude, Zenshô, and of course Ma Chérie and Shi no Butô...

    Found this video pretty late, but I'm super happy to have taken the time to watch through and hear your opinion. Mana's later project Moi Dix Mois is an excellent experiment of Gothic Rock (and some harder rock as well).
    Kozi also went on to have a solo project with several albums and singles in the mid-2000's and also started singing. His vocal style has gone through tremendous character development and growth, and he continued with his occasionally wacky composition choices into present day with smaller projects like 'Eve of Destiny', playing guitar for other bands like DALLE and XA-VAT, and finally settling into his current band where he sings and plays guitar called ZIZ.

    I actually discovered malice only a month ago and so this was great for finding more songs, thank you, also I agree on the bass thing, when I discovered malice that was what I thought. The original ma Chérie was a Tetsu song, I feel like you would prefer that version. Also people dislike Gackt for all manner of reasons (s*xual assault allegations, joking about malice being dead etc.) so it’s pretty justified.

    Back in late 90s early 00s, I was a hardcore fan of Malice Mizer, so after everything that happened, I was so happy when they found Klaha and released Garnet and Beast of Blood. I thought their future as a band was brighter than ever. Then they suddenly disbanded ;u;
    So I found solace in Deadman and... well shit happens ;u;
    Funny thing, U2 being my favorite band ever, I was caught by Malice Mizer after I heard Le Ciel, because the guitar riff sounds so much as The Edge's to me. I never had heard anybody to noticed that, so I jumped when you mentioned it with Gone with the wind V.2
    Great video!

    I loved this deep dive. There were actually quite a few songs / releases in here that I had never heard of before - especially the album Voyage. Guess I'm not as much of a fan as I always thought I was.
    I've been in love with Malice Mizer ever since I first heard them around 2007 or so.
    I'm also a musician - drummer and bassist - but I know very little music theory. So I very much appreciate how in depth you went on some of these songs.
    I absolutely LOVE how entirely different this bands compositions are, compared to ANYTHING made outside Japan. Same is true for a great many other Visual Kei bands.
    There's a sense of emotional gravitas in Japanese compositions that you just don't find in western music. At the very least I have not come across anything that has grabbed me as much as Japanese Visual Kei music.

    Tsuioku no Kakera and Shi no Buto were actually songs from the Tetsu era that were only played live with him. So that might explain why there was no composer credit, just as there was no composer credit for Ma Cherie, another Tetsu era song. There was also a vocal version of Zenchou which was performed with guitars from that period.

    • @huxley1559
      @huxley1559 2 года назад

      I literally have Voyage before me and both songs were composed by Mana. Also, only Shi no Butou was an old Tetsu song, hence why its lyrics are credited as written by "Malice Mizer" as opposed to Gackt, who wrote all other lyrics. Using the band name for writing credits where the writing of ex band members is concerned, is pretty normal in VK (maybe Japanese music as a whole?)

    For what you said, i think Tetsu really wrote Ma Cherie but i'm not sure. I listened to the live version of that song with him on vocals, so...
    I like Gackt's voice a lot, i love Klaha so muuuuch but I definitely love and enjoy Tetsu's voice more 'cause I just LOVE that era. What i'm always sad is that i think we will never hear a studio version of 'Portugal' and '16 no solitude' u_u you can hear me crying somewhere. But yeah i love MM so much, forever in love with them. It was nice to revisit their music and get a fuller picture of what they were doing at that time. It gave me a strange sense of nostalgia.

    Great review, kudos!
    I have all their albums and singles, and therefore can confirm some facts thanks to the information found in the booklets. Hôkai Jokyoku was composed by Mana. Bara no Sôretsu was indeed composed by Kami (sound programmed by Yu~ki, arranged by Malice Mizer). Shue plays the drums on Gardenia and Beast of Blood. Garnet was composed by Közi. Akui is the support drummer on Garnet and Gensô Rakuen. The lyrics of these singles were all written by Klaha.
    Also, Ma Chérie and Shi no Butô~a romance of the Cendrillon were composed during the Tetsu era, and they permormed these songs on stage. In fact, the band wrote about 20 songs when Tetsu was their singer, although only 7 ended up on the album Mémoire. The other songs from that era include Freeze Me, Rafflesia, Shôjo no Hitomi, 16 no Solitude, Sadness, Speed of Desperate, Hakuchû no Waltz, etc. There's also the demo tape Sans Logique (a nod to France's most iconic pop singer Mylène Farmer, Mana is a big fan of hers) that features the instrumental songs Tempation of the Widow and Shûmaku e no Tobira...
    If you have any question, feel free to ask ^_=

    You’ve heard “Gone With the Wind” before because it’s literally a remake of “Dedicated to the Aegean Sea” from Memoire. Malice Mizer rarely performed old songs whenever they got a new vocalist, and when they did they would rewrite them. They did this for “Memory and Sky” with Klaha too.

    Bara no Seidou is my favorite album but they really disappointed with the mixing. the mixing for the live for Bara no Seidou is vastly superior, even Saikai no Chi to Bara gets a very nice cello at the beginning. i really reccomend it if you wish to listen to that album at its peak.

      There will always be a few we disagree with. Especially with a review this big and a band that diverse. Lol

    OH SO IM NOT INSANE FOR THINKING LE CIEL ISNT THE HOLY GRAIL SOME PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE THANK GOD 😭😭 i like the song lots and the outfits used for it are one of my fave vkei looks but cmon...why listen to it when you can listen to like gekka no yasoukyoku instead

      It's all about taste and perspective really. I had heard songs similar to it before. I supposed if I heard Le ciel first, maybe I'd appreciate the sound more.
      This is something Japanese composers would do...especially in the Visual Kei side of things. They would purposefully mimic each other's songs. Endless Rain by X has been mimicked so many times.
