Many people look at Nogizaka's early days and wonder why some people were chosen for senbatsu and others were not. It wasn't about being the best dancer or singer (as Ms. Nakada and Rottii proved); my theory is they chose the senbatsu members more for their ability to conform to the company's vision, while the UnderGirls by default became where many of the more creative and independent members landed (as well as many of the women attending college).
The first Underlive on April 13th 2014 (Himetan's 18th Birthday BTW), which was produced by the UnderMembers themselves following Mai Shinuchi's lobbying the company, set the group on a path of fan love and loyalty that defined the entire group from there forward. The songs are performed without voiceovers, and the smaller venue gives each member the feeling that each one has special fans cheering just for them. Usually an Underlive ends with both members and fans in tears.
In looking at how many former UnderGirls are so successful in the pursuit of their own dreams, I wonder if there is something to it?
