Ang Lee has famously commented that, as a result of his rebelling-against-Asian-tradition childhood, all of his films are about "children fighting against their parents' expectations" -- Brokeback Mountain, Sense and Sensibility, The Wedding Banquet, and, yes, 2003 Hulk. This specific part of it -- the Promethean father-son conflict -- is what really gripped me.
LOL, sorry but I just had to laugh at this comment. The reason being that when this film came out, I and many others who regularly frequented the IMDB chat boards when they existed were told by the fans of the film that "in 20 years time this film will be hailed as a masterpiece" 😂😂😂, it was funny at the time and your comment brought it all back. I mean no disrespect to your view or opinion, but I never shared it then and I dont share it now. Awful film!
I have a real soft spot for this one. I love its gives-no-fucks endless experimentation, and if anything, I think it almost plays better today because it's so far removed from the cookie-cutter MCU style. Yeah, it's got a lot of flaws, but I still enjoy it. (And I non-ironically like its Hulk, more than the MCU version.)
Honestly I will make a... slight... defense of this movie. I like how ang Lee actually tries for something deeper than what came before. And I honestly think the comic book panel idea had some real promise. The problem is that it tries so hard to do two things that it kinda fails at totally accomplishing it. But I congratulate it for its attempt to do it.
I can see what Ang Lee was trying to do, Ang Lee tried to do for the Hulk what Christopher Nolan did for Batman, make a grounded psychological character piece. While Ang Lee didn’t stick the landing completely, I appreciate the effort and think he was on the right track. I mean the Hulk is a pretty psychologically complex character, and has as much pathos as Batman, and this movie did capture some of that, especially that great theme.
Sam Elliot did a masterful job as Thunderbolt Ross. Jennifer Connelly in Maverick Top Gun has aged very little from her appearance in Hulk 2003. A bit older now but still looking youthful! Such a beauty.
Yeah, I understand why Marvel wanted a clean start when they brought Hulk into the MCU... but man, I wish they'd kept Elliot as Ross. He was already perfect casting. William Hurt really brought nothing to the role, and definitely couldn't pull off the moustache.
Stam, you knocked it out of the ball park again. Your usual impeccable excellence. Every body had daddy issues no thaddy issues had me cracking up. The guy who played hulk here did a great job as Chooper. Yeah he is a good actor. Brilliant video Stam, Good on ya.
The amount of very stupid people I've talked to who have an unreasonable hatred for this movie because "They made David Banner the bad guy" is astounding.
I don't know if it's a good film, but . . . I like it? Yeah, I like it. Remember seeing it in the cinema, and after coming out of it, saw a bunch of families looking totally perplexed. That was fun in of itself
I'd much rather watch this Hulk than the MCU version. Edward Norton might not have been a bad choice for the Ang Lee film, but that's only because Eric Bana played it a little too bland. Edward Norton's performance in the "sequel" was the only thing I liked about that movie. He can take a normal character and put an edge on it. That's the only thing I'd change about the Ang Lee Hulk.
I really appreciate Bana's *intensity.* One of my problems with the MCU Hulk is that, deep down, I just don't believe that Ruffalo is "always angry." But Bana? Oh yeah, he angry. There's a definite sense that he's constantly holding himself back. I agree he underplays it a bit, but I feel like if there'd been a sequel he would have nailed it.
You make good points about the quality evident, A for effort, yet it somehow doesn't work as well as it should. I wish they'd edit it down 20 minutes shorter and remove some of the distracting picture in picture editing. I did not like how Hulk grew so big, like 20 feet tall? I hope you review 2008 The Incredible Hulk next.
Finally the hulk trilogy is now complete , can't wait for the Eddie Norton follow up vid , and the from hulk too dump mcu vid too. Or make them one mega vid i guess
It was on the telly a couple of nights ago. I missed the first half hour or so, which is a good thing. It's just alright. A shame too. The Hulk is the only superhero I still wouldn't mind being!
I 💚 this movie mostly for Nick Noltie giving no Fucks , Sam Elliott as thunderbolt Ross , Jennifer Connelly as Betty . This reminds me of the Peter David comics .
I grew up reading Silver Age comics, mostly Marvel, and I don't remember one bloody appearance or mention of Bruce Banner's father. Nada, none, zero, zip.
4:26 This is the single image that ruined this movie for me. That and a supposed rage monster being safety conscious enough to need to tip out a tank's passengers before throwing it. Oh! And the energy monster end battle. I still prefer this iteration to the official MCU Incredible Hulk movie.
The Hulk comic was 50s B movie made as a "superhero" comic book movie and Ang Lee's film took those two things and adding the psychology stuff... which I prefer to ignore as it pushes the whole question of "is it Jekyll and Hyde or is it Jekyll OR Hyde" into "Stupid question, it's just Bruce." Incredible Hulk wisely stepped away from that and the MCU went firmly to "they're two different people". Also, the psychology elements ruin the whole thing as does the prep work Bruce's father... a character so well defined he's either "Bruce's Father" or "as played by Nick Nolte"... performed on Baby Bruce, almost negating the whole fracking Gamma bomb Banner invented. "DR GreenHulk Or I Stopped Worrying By Almost Dropping the Bomb From the Story" Rick Jones, MIA... probably for the best as he's also a relic of 50s B movies. But Bruce saving someone from his Gamma Bomb but getting dosed in his place... why not add THAT back in? In the end, is Hulk better than The Beast of Yucca Flats? Yes, stupid question. Is it more fun to watch? No.
It's not horrible. Elliot looks comic accurate & is cranky enough. Bana is fine if lacking nerd for Banner. Jennifer Connolly does well but is just a gorgeous woman. Nolte is, I'll be nice. He's shit.
Ha ha ha! MCU fanboy? You could not be more wrong! I enjoyed some of the early films and a couple of them, like Winter Soldier, were genuinely good. However, by the time Thanos snapped his fingers I was bored shitless with the whole thing. I hoped all of them that died would stay dead (although obviously they wouldn’t… because $ 😂). Stuck with it until Endgame (which was pitiful) & haven’t watched any of it since. Don’t even know what Phase they are on now…I don’t give a shit quite frankly. As for Ang Lee’s ‘Hulk’ he tried, bless him, I’ll give him that 😂
@@markdavidwelsh3340 Who's side are you on?? One statement you are agreeing with me, the next one you're being unreasonable.. Most of the best MCU movies are the actually serious ones.. Every movie Steve Rogers has been in(except AoU and Endgame) are great and on top of the best movies they had.. Ang Lee made Hulk too serious, considering most people wanted him to just smash.. Due to the budget, the studio didn't give Ang Lee enough money to work with, that's why the action is short and/or in the dark.. All his fights in the movie comics were longer than in the movie.. He also fought the military in San Francisco and destroyed them without breaking a sweat.. Even when fighting his dad, they broke mountains while fighting, but we had to be told how strong Hulk is, and symbolism, rather than the action spectacle that would have been..
I am still laughing at this review. And gently sobbing at having had to endure this odd film. No, the film was not 'bad' it was just 'unusual'? If you love this film, please don't tell me. Go out there and shout at random strangers. You will get the same puzzled response.

Best Hulk. One of the best comic movies. Maybe it will be appreciated after another twenty years.

Love this hulk, definitely the best in my opinion
@@Keefymonoped But here you are, so what does that say about your puny life??

Finally someone understands!! Cant stand the mcu its all cookie cutter nothing unique like this
My favourite of all the Hulks.
Full marks for ignoring Stewart Lee's over bloated joke about meeting the Director of this film and 'not liking him when he's Ang Lee'.
Stewart Lee and over bloated joke are synonyms.

This was 2003, two years before Batman Begins.
I didn’t literally, I meant both guys had similar intentions when tackling comic book characters

I'm waiting for Into The Hulkiverse, with all the Hulk actors brought in from different dimensions.
Playing your outro with Hulk Hands was genius!
Fair play for the clips of Bana in 'The Castle'! Thank you again for an enjoyable video
I really liked this CG Hulk because it reminded me of the comics when I first saw it. I actually still prefer it to this day
I like the 2003 Hulk movie.

Jennifer Connelly as Betty beats out any other version.
I had a green HULK branded padlock that was marketed with this film that lasted for ever and reminded me if the movie constantly 😂
I remember this film had a great comic style, which I believe is wasted on the target audience. Greats work on this though mate...
At least this hulk cgi looks better than the recent she hulk one.
I’m not Spartacus… but I still liked this video.(I may have Thaddy issues)
I like the comic book style panels etc
Reminds me of the Wonder Woman series
It just needed more smash and less daddy's
At least Ang Lee's Bruce Banner never said "the secret is, I'm always angry".
not keen on the hulk design. He an anger fuelled rage machine which in this never looks angry.
One hundred thousand Noltz?

Another great great great side effect of this was the Xbox game Hulk Ultimate Destruction.
Better than the entire MCU

Ecto Cooler Hulk was cool! MCU Hulk soon morphed into a joke of himself. 😞
Hulk *love* Victor Borge!
Bugs Bunny: "Hmmm, mmmmmm, Hmmmm. It Stinks."
come on were sliders
The animation itself is fine, but his skin looks like plastic.
That "plastic" look is typical of early 2000's CG.

Yeah his dad is an important part of his story, now. But I didn’t know that when I saw this
Don't make me Ang Lee Mr McGee, you won't like me when i'm Ang Lee.

The Ang Lee cgi Hulk looks way better than any pf the chgi crap being peoddled out by Feige over at Marvel these days.
Oh my, those SFX have not stood the test of time. Lou Ferrigno in a silly wig looks like a more convincing Hulk! 😂
More convincing..?
Okay.
mcu fanboy detected.. Go watch professor hulk or captain marvel child.. This movie is for adults, and people who love the Hulk

The only thing I remember about this movie is how pretentious this horrible director is... and the poodle from hell.
Horrible director…
Interesting.
This was damn fine, Stam Fine. Boing!!!
Main problem is simply that Hulk looks ridiculous
