- As the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad prepared to bring rail service to Simpson County, Mississippi, for the first time in 1900, a forwarding thinking couple from Star hatched an audacious plan to take the county seat away from Westville and build a new town along the tracks. This short video details the legal drama that played out over a seven year period that ended in victory but sparked an act of revenge that left the fledgling town a "moldering ruins."
Presented as part of Simpson County's 2024 Bicentennial Celebrations, this short documentary, produced by the Simpson Co. Historical & Genealogical Society explores the biographies of this entrepreneurial couple, as well as those of many of our early settlers. It also features advertisements of long-forgotten businesses who found a home on Main Street in the shadow of our beautiful courthouse.
