Claude Steele on Stereotype Threat

In October 2011, Claude Steele presented a SCOPE Brown Bag lecture on "Girls, Math, and Other Clues about how Stereotypes Affect Academic Achievement." After the talk, he sat down with us to discuss his research on stereotype threat and how it affects academic achievement.
Claude Steele is the I. James Quillen Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University and a recognized leader in the field of social psychology. His groundbreaking work on stereotype threat applies a social-psychological lens to academic achievement, asking, as Steele writes, "Could something as abstract as stereotype threat really affect something as irrepressible as intelligence?"
