When you watch it, try and remember it’s from 1994. I’ve seen so many people who haven’t seen it judge it by today’s standards on their first viewing. A lot of techniques were newer to film too.
No one can ever touch Brandon Lee's adaptation. Yes, the original wasn't perfect, but at least Brandon read the comics and kept it true to the character and the comic. Nice review, guys . I hope to see you guys make it big on YT one day. 👌
To be fair, he died before they could clean it up, too. Like if it had the time and he didn’t get shot, I believe the original would’ve only been better.
The fact that Eric was unstoppable on the original is part of why it is so good. Its almost like a reverse slasher flick where instead of following scared teenagers who get picked off one by oen by the monster, it is very scared criminals getting picked off one by one by the ghost of the man whom they wronged. In some way it is just as much a atoey about the criminals facing the consequences of their actions as it is a story about Eric getting revenge. He also does good things while he is there. He manages to get Darla clean and waking her up to the fact that she has a daughter who needs her. He gives Sarah her mother back, he inspires the sergeant to quit smoking, he tries to support the fragments of good left in the world that killed him and his finace. And yeah, the movie itself is mostly a cool action revenge flick that you can watch and turn your brain off to, but it is also about love and preserving goodness in a word that is hellbend on destroying itself. That is one of the many reasons why i love the crow. Especially in todays entertainment hellscape where everything is so cynical and divisive and hateful. Its just nice to put on movies like this once in awhile and see a movie that is about love.
That’s an interesting take on it. Reverse slasher flick. It works. You do really get a sense that the criminals are facing down judgement when he’s taking them out. Especially T-Bird when he straps him into his car. The OG film has a lot of depth to it for such a straight forward story. Appreciate the comment.

The action scenes in the remake were not great. Whoever was in charge of the weapons did a terrible job. There were two scenes I noticed that pistols were getting muzzle report (flash) but the slide wasn't even moving and there was absolutely zero recoil. Seriously some of the worst gunplay scenes I've seen.
The original had style and heart...which is why it works even though Eric has very few obstacles standing in the way of completing his task. This one reversed that formula: stakes and obstacles for miles, but not a shred of heart or style. It was like a How To on botching a remake. The only redeeming quality a remake COULD have offered was adapting Obarr's original graphic novel more faithfully than the 94 film, but they went a completely different direction. This remake is way less faithful to the source material than the original. Just a fail in every possible metric. It shouldve been another entry in the series. At least we could write it off as another crappy sequel, rather than as a blasphemous remake 🤮

In the original, The Crow and Top Dollar had a lot of interesting lines of monologues (also the cop character). And the four men who killed Shelly were such colorful characters they all stood out. They were all so interesting. This movie was just boring.

We actually know more about Shelly, and a lot of the other characters in the original even without being told. It's a cliche, but the storytellers there showed us instead of telling. We knew that Shelly is politically motivated- she is raising petitions and fighting slum lords. Judging by her and an Eric setting Halloween as a marriage date, we can infer that she is into the darker side of life. It also worth noting that her obscure and occult choice of reading- you know, "Abash the devil stood and saw how awful goodness is..."- well, I think it shows that her character is a highly intelligent, creative, and complicated mind. That's actually a pretty impressive amount of character devo from someone with maybe 19 minutes of total screen time and I believe 4 lines of dialogue. The first Crow and the book that inspired it are no lie two of my favorite pieces of modern work. If there are any fans reading this who have never read the book- I can't recommend it enough. Yes, it's a comic- graphic novel- but it completely transcends what that even means. There are entire pages that are simply oil paintings that the author created during his yearlong mourning of his deceased fiancee. There are also sets of pages that alternate between collected poems- some by the author but many from his favorite writers. This is all juxtaposed with the story panels, but there are also pages just covered in old 80's goth band lyrics. It makes for an unbelievably dark and raw fever dream of a read. It makes me very, very sad to see that legacy dripped all over with industry shlock. I'm not even going to address the first film and Brandon's legacy, because it is self evident. I'll just say thet it's the rare work that somehow builds on its source material and exists strongly as its own thing without tarnishing its original. The fact that the whole thing is literally haunted by Brandon's death pushes it into the realm of legend. But behind the legend, there's loss, heartbreak, and most of all, hope, in both of those original works. There the story of the Crow's author James O'Barr somehow finding life through his creation after losing everything...there is the story of a beautiful young talent immortalized in his last performance in the crazy requiem that only the arts can provide. That's scared ground. It only makes sense that prospective gold diggers would find nothing but a curse trying to mess around with it.
“…it’s a rare work that somehow builds on its source material and exists as its own thing without tarnishing the original.” I love the way you put this, and agree 100%.
I saw the first trailer for this cluster-f**k and that was all I could stomach. You couldn't pay me enough to watch this... ever. Last week, in honor of the "reimagining's" opening night, I raised one to Brandon Lee and watched The Crow '94 again.
Anybody mention that Eric's powers in this remake are not, in any way, connected to a crow? Except for those visual of crows in those purgatory scenes his powers have nothing to do with crows. In the original his vision is tied to the crow's and his powers are too. But here? Nope. His power is connected to his love, or something. So why was it called The Crow?
Yeah we went on a rant about it but trimmed it for time. When he first comes back to life it seems like the crow is leading him, like it’s supposed to, and then that is completely abandoned. The crow never leads him anywhere again. He figures out where to go for the rest of the film by looking at cell phones. It’s so lazy.
Finished watching the reboot this morning. It wasn't terrible, but it's forgettable and kinda pointless. The original movie had its problems, and I can't stand the people who don't wanna admit those problems, but whatever... It's not worth getting hot under the collar for.
It was already bad when they released the trailer and Hollywood just never learns and they're just gonna keep going even after bad review and box office bomb. 😒 At least im excited to see bill Skarsgard in Nosferatu that's for sure gonna get many oscar nominations
I grew up in the 90s, loved the Original Crow. And to be honest. I loved this remake. Yes, the first and second acts were a bit slow and predictable, with Twigs being the one redeeming quality. But after Eric’s tranformation, man what a ride! I was very pleased, with the over the top mayhem and buckets of blood. Definitely a fun movie. Would recommend.
I completely agree with you, that Shelly, in the original movie is an afterthought. We were not suppose to know her as a character. She is not the driving force. The driving force is ERIC´S LOVE FOR HER (In my opinion anyway). We see her to realize wat he has lost. That, any many other things, were lost on this production 😞
An immature codependent mess! Eric was such wuss he had to die twice. Boring, flat, and ridiculous. It wasn’t even Goth not sure what it is but Goth ain’t it! Eric’s tattoos were so ridiculous I couldn’t tell if it was Bill Skarsgard, Pete Davidson, or Lil Peep back from the dead. The ending I couldn’t tell if I was watching The Crow or Scream VI This movie makes the other Crow movies after 1994 seem Oscar Worthy. I would watch any of those movies over this. In fact I would watch all of them in a row over this!
My thoughts on the new movie? Other than I will never watch it unless it comes on Netflix or something. But they should never have gave this dude the name Eric Draven. That name died with Brandon. Could've named him anything other than that and people might have liked it. But when you try to remake an already near perfect movie. You better do something fuckin special or the entire rest of your career may need some thoughts put into it. Brandon is/was Eric and that's the end of that discussion...next question!!😁
The Crow is cursed, any asshole that try’s to make a remake will fail. A man died making the original, so it is obvious taboo to try to make something good after it is cursed. It’s a Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee thing. Look it up.
Well done boys,,,,but I’m worried your new reviews are becoming harder to find or only premiered quickly on my RUclips feed,,, don’t know if this is a conscious thing by RUclips,,, if so you guys deserve much better. Keep going
God damn the set, the lighting, the foul mouthed honesty- this is my first time seeing you guys and I can already tell I’m in for a treat- time to watch more of your stuff
Just fyi, part of the Crow's powers conanically are that, because he is dead, he no longer feels physical pain or exhaustion. So when he gets shot through the hand in the original, he is feeling no pain. He was feigning it, which is why he immediately drops the act as soon as he turns around. Actually, the "healing" part was introduced in the movies but was not apart of the comic books. He was more along the lines of just invulnerable.
Does anyone agree that Brandon Lees stunt double should get some credit for the original?I think he was understanding,of not only the Crow character, but also Brandon Lee himself.
Unfortunately, the story told in this “remake”…of which the Director claimed would be more faithful to the original graphic novel…IS COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE WHEN COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL!!! I’m so thankful that I didn’t waste my time & money on seeing this pile of crap on it’s opening weekend! Granted, it may still be playing in some theaters, I’m waiting to see it when comes to a streaming service…although, I might just watch “The Crow: Wicked Prayer” (the one with Edward Furlong) instead!!! And I swore to myself that it was the one Crow sequel that I’d never-never-never ever watch! It’s just that…….from all of the review videos I’ve watched regarding this “remake”…..I’d probably get more enjoyment watching Wicked Prayer instead. And that’s truly a horrifying thought…..
Original is PERFECT and its story is FINISHED! There is nothing more to say and to show! It becomes a monument to 90's and to Brandon Lee. Trying to remake it or making sequels is just soulless cash grab and is disgusting!
I can't say I am particularly interested in this stuff, but it was interesting to watch whilst I at my homemade curry and rice. I am giving it a big thumbs up for the moment at the end. I thought your humble response as to enquire how you might have offended him was so commendable and your shout out to him and the shared genuine hope that he gets a job in the future, was good to see.
Always good to see you guys. Great video. I agree with you 110 Percent. I think it would be much easier to do a good Crow Movie than this empty crackhead mess. Just take two likeable characters and start with the opera scene ;) Greetings from germany and keep up doing awesome reviews.
Original ending was meant to feature a Murder Of Crows descending & taking the villain to hell while at the same time taking Eric to heaven...at least that's what I heard from a leaked test screening several months ago. No open ending for a sequel.
My personal opinion, this should’ve stayed in development hell because I still hate that subplot how he doesn’t actually become the crow closer to the end of the movie and there was also something that a lot of people didn’t notice but I did. They revealed what the entire movie was about the trailer who the villain is in my personal opinion, Bill is a good actor, but I think he was seriously not good for this role. I mean this guy’s a drug addicted Twink boy at least in the original our main character was a punk rocker so you know that he actually has some muscle before he died
The original was awesome!! I liked it...loved it...but I also lived in Detroit a big part of my life...and the Crow ain't Detroit but it's Detroit if that makes sense
I have a theory that Hollywood creates all the remakes so they come up instead of the originals. The biggest and sketchiest example is the UK show Utopia. They remade it right around covid. If you havent seen the UK version you must. Trust.
On a human level that was one of the cooler things I’ve heard content creators do for a guy who was a fan that trolled you guys. Good on the guy too for acknowledging what he did. Well earned sub here. Content is very entertaining too
Ya the idea that he was an unstoppable force was kinda the whole point. It wasn’t a movie about EARNING retribution, it was a movie about GETTING retribution. People might as well complain about how unrealistic John Wick is since it’s a fairly similar premise 😂
@@nickkoyle3599 It’s not really comparable to John Wick, though. They’re different characters. Eric was mission focused and he only cared about killing Skank. He only killed everybody, because they were all shooting at him. He had no reason to take out Top Dollar.
She was the main character. The dominant one. The leader. He was the puppy.. Then SHE gets him killed by majorly mishandling the evidence and not stressing the importance of fleeing but somehow he loved her so much more and got broughtb back, like I'd be mad, you mean she didn't love me enough to get the same deal? And even their profound love that was enough to give him the chance to come back... was gen z love. Just sweaty drug fueled hookup culture over like 2 weeks The crow's world breaking romance... was just a situationship And the big bad? Rich white man
Politics aside, a Crow remake was never going to work. If its sequels flopped, why would a remake be different? The original movie is not just a gothic masterpiece. It was a creation of its time, a mix of tragedy and death (both in film and in real life) that gave it an air of mystique, of honesty. The remake is basically a Hot Topic ad made by the Dustborn guys.
The OG Crow had a specific style and yes, the tragedy of Lee’s death that helped propel it forward. It continued the tragedy following the comic writer’s life. This was basically a parody.
They should have made it more like the comic. That way it would have been different enough to be its own thing. We just see a guy in clown face killing guys left and right. We don’t even know he’s dead until the flashback.
Also, just gotta say... Dude on the left. I don't know your names yet (I'm working through your back catalogue here. Great stuff so far.) You... You look like Thomas Jane incognito. Like, when did Jane give up acting and become a film critic?

I love the way you put this, and agree 100%.
I saw the first trailer for this cluster-f**k and that was all I could stomach. You couldn't pay me enough to watch this... ever. Last week, in honor of the "reimagining's" opening night, I raised one to Brandon Lee and watched The Crow '94 again.
Losing your job beyond sucks, here's hoping it was an open door to better things. 10/10 review.
I think the Crow with Edward Furlong and Dennis Hopper was better 😂😂😂😂😂
That one had some depth to it and was based on a Crow novel of the same name
Rare to find new and refreshing channels on youtube. This is one. Thank you good Sirs.
I fucking love listening to you two HHabaha you literally destroyed this shit! With the simply truth ❤
Happy to entertain.
Saw The Crow when I was 13 in theatre; the gun battle was so damn loud, but I left the theater feeling awesomely deaf 😊
Matt and Bobby bringing up that dude's comment and apology is the most wholesome shit ever. 😂
We’re not always assholes, lol.
You'd hope one day Hollywood would get the message. Sadly not 😂
Finished watching the reboot this morning. It wasn't terrible, but it's forgettable and kinda pointless. The original movie had its problems, and I can't stand the people who don't wanna admit those problems, but whatever... It's not worth getting hot under the collar for.
You two special guys need to see Strange Darling. What a treat.
I've heard really good things. Last time I checked, it wasn't playing anywhere near us. Must investigate further.
@@hardcutreviews Yea, just now stumbled onto you 2, Strange Darling would be in you boys' wheelhouse.
@@benjamindobalina7493 Definitely going to check it out.
The opening edit alone is worth a thumbs up. 😂 Well done!
It was already bad when they released the trailer and Hollywood just never learns and they're just gonna keep going even after bad review and box office bomb. 😒
At least im excited to see bill Skarsgard in Nosferatu that's for sure gonna get many oscar nominations
please review the acolyte in all its glory for its one and only season. Luv u guys, keep up the gr8 work
I grew up in the 90s, loved the Original Crow.
That ONE scene of violence in the lobby made up for the 90% slog-fest? Ok.... And Twigs being an exception?? To each their own, I guess lol
Another home run, boys. 🤙
you.guys.are.100%.on.point. Plus i give this movie 10 out of 10 rainbows. I didn't see it, but it oozes rainbow flavor
The Crow is one of the worst remakes ever made!
It's up there...
Why f___ Robocop 2014? That movie shreds wtf
You've articulated my feelings so accurately.
I rarely give a film a 1 star rating, but this was entirely cringe.
It was honestly the worst thing we sat through this year. And that includes Madame Web.
@@hardcutreviews They are racing but I guess you're right haha.
I ought to be embarrassed by how funny I find fart sounds. But I’m not. Not at all.
Nothing to be ashamed of here.
I'm glad the Hard Cut cinematic universe is expanding and I hope Mr. thehouse3501 got better!
I knew it was gonna be bad, but damn. What an atrocious POS this REEEmake is.
The ending I couldn’t tell if I was watching The Crow or Scream VI
This movie makes the other Crow movies after 1994 seem Oscar Worthy. I would watch any of those movies over this. In fact I would watch all of them in a row over this!
You didn’t like Eric’s fur coat? Pure style.
Yes. All yes. It's good to see you guys. Good work gentlemen
Dragged my gf to this movie. I’m still apologizing.
New Crow is Abomination And insult To first movie and Brandon Lee.
man The Crow is something i watch religiously this time of year, the cool weather hits and it is time!!! such a great movie.
Love how this new film is making the original even more popular. That’s about all it’s good for.
Keep going
Thank you. I wish I could show you the backend analytics. Let’s just say the numbers don’t add up.
God damn the set, the lighting, the foul mouthed honesty- this is my first time seeing you guys and I can already tell I’m in for a treat- time to watch more of your stuff
Thanks man. Welcome to the channel.
Interesting. Thanks for the insight. The idea of feeling the pain and still pressing forward was one of the only things we liked about the new film.
Does anyone agree that Brandon Lees stunt double should get some credit for the original?I think he was understanding,of not only the Crow character, but also Brandon Lee himself.
Hell yeah plus he directed the john wick movies too
No more tied scores!
Love the whole take, especially that last shout out and accepting the apology. Stand up dudes, I'm subscribed now.
Glad to have you!
I enjoyed both movies. Please stop comparing the two. The narrative has not changed its about love and revenge.
Uh huh.
Original is PERFECT and its story is FINISHED! There is nothing more to say and to show! It becomes a monument to 90's and to Brandon Lee. Trying to remake it or making sequels is just soulless cash grab and is disgusting!
Nothing is wrong with the clothes. And no, I didn't watch this movie
Bro, the fur coat....
You guys are hilarious I’m so glad I found this channel
New subscriber! Loved the fun clips throughout the review.
I like how the clips from the first movie are bashing the remake 😆
The OG film did the real heavy lifting in this review.
First time I have watched your guys channel, 10-10 u guys are awesome lol
The first movie with Brandon Lee. is The only Crow movie !!!
Content is very entertaining too
Hearing critics talk about the 1994 Crow and his healing, I realize I don't really care about stakes lol
Ya the idea that he was an unstoppable force was kinda the whole point. It wasn’t a movie about EARNING retribution, it was a movie about GETTING retribution.
People might as well complain about how unrealistic John Wick is since it’s a fairly similar premise 😂
Lol John Wick is the Crow on steroids. John Wick would've took out Top Dollar at the ambush. Which ones got the powers really?
@@nickkoyle3599 It’s not really comparable to John Wick, though. They’re different characters. Eric was mission focused and he only cared about killing Skank. He only killed everybody, because they were all shooting at him. He had no reason to take out Top Dollar.
Damn, why did the last minute hit me in the feels?
She was the main character. The dominant one. The leader. He was the puppy..
Then SHE gets him killed by majorly mishandling the evidence and not stressing the importance of fleeing but somehow he loved her so much more and got broughtb back, like I'd be mad, you mean she didn't love me enough to get the same deal?
And even their profound love that was enough to give him the chance to come back... was gen z love. Just sweaty drug fueled hookup culture over like 2 weeks
The crow's world breaking romance... was just a situationship
And the big bad? Rich white man
Yeah it’s hilariously bad when you break it down into a situationship where she just gets him killed because she sucks.
#Boycottthecrow2024
Rest in Paradise
Brandon and Bruce Lee.
There can be only one
Eric Draven!
First video ever seen of you guys. Great review, like 2 guys hanging out talking about movies
They should have made it more like the comic. That way it would have been different enough to be its own thing.
We just see a guy in clown face killing guys left and right. We don’t even know he’s dead until the flashback.
Great review! Thanks. One thing, though. How could you not mention the soundtrack from the original?
Soundtrack in the original is great. Sometimes we trim sections for time.
Yes! Been waiting for this one. Love the reviews, guys. Keep up the good work. Eric Draven deserved better.
Draven deserved way better.
Also, just gotta say... Dude on the left. I don't know your names yet (I'm working through your back catalogue here. Great stuff so far.) You... You look like Thomas Jane incognito. Like, when did Jane give up acting and become a film critic?
It's been a while since I've heard that one, but I used to get that a lot.
This is the first video I’ve seen from you guys, and I already love the channel. *subscribed 🤙🏽
Thanks for subbing! Glad to have you along!
I want to go back and watch the original now… what do you think? Worth it?
Yeah it’s worth it. The film is definitely a time capsule.
Yeah now I've gotta watch the original again...
The beginning and the thumbnail are amazing and hilarious
