that's the thing that sucks when people call out "bad cgi". A movie can have a hundred amazing cgi shots, but then as soon as one shot looks slightly bad, which most of the time isn't even the fault of the vfx artists, everyone starts talking about how bad the cgi is, completely ignoring every other shot. Black Panther is always the movie that comes to mind, most of that movie looks great, but there's that one horrible looking fight scene because the vfx artists were rushed, but I never hear people talk about the good cgi, only the one bad shot
whether you like the boys or not, what you have to respect is the quality of the effects, and the obvious hard work that goes into them, they are movie quality and above.

My one problem with the A-Train scene is the physics of him stopping. The body A-Train is dragging should keep its momentum when he stops. Everything else in the shot is amazing tho 👍
Its part of A-Train's super power, he violates conservation of energy and momentum constantly. Its reasonable to assume that would carry over to things he's using his power on.

I would love this. The Orville has some amazing stuff, but I would also like to get their opinion on scale. For instance, the shots when the small run-abouts re-enter the ship, I always get the impression that the scale is way off ... it seems to make The Orville look much smaller in comparison to the size of the run-about.

That cheek-cut made me remember an old lesson I learned from the behind the scenes materials of Paul Verhoeven's sci fi movies. I think it was the nail color change shot in Total Recall in particular. The lesson was that if you have the choice of adding an effect in shot or removing it from the start of the shot... Always opt for the latter. Because if you start with something painted out and then reveal the real footage with animatronics and prosthetics and practical effects during the shot, the audience won't be looking for the telltale signs of CGI until the CGI is already gone. Not entirely applicable to the cheek wound, as they did end up replacing the makeup wound anyways. But it is still one of my go to rules with CGI and compositing.

"Keep it grounded" In terms of how CGI and practical effects are used, right? Not the effect itself? Because I still have nightmares about that guy that can shrink himself. He was grounded TOO DEEP imo 😆
The Boys really shows that good film making, just because you want to make art, is still possible. I think thats one reason why people like this show so much, its entertaining for the sake of being entertaining, no unnecessary extras. Additionally it has the perfect mix out of visual effect, CGI and practical effects. The jeep scene shows, practical explosions still hit different that pure CGI ones and visual effects help to make this shot better.
The boys has a really good balance of practical and VFX, and for a super hero show it's really up there competing against these super VFX rich shows and films
Love love love the final trio of boys fight scene with the slightly increased speed of punches, all I ever wanted in supe films. Would be thrilled in Stephan & you boys talked about it.
I lowkey love it when there are ooopsies uploaded in this channel like at 11:09. I uploaded the wrong version on one of my big short films that ended up getting like 3 million views. It was missing a VFX element and the whole time i'm like "JUST IGNORE THESE 3 SECONDS." And of course it's something I worked on tirelessly for weeks.
As a gun lover and a lover of this show, the part that triggered me the most was that the bullet kept perfect shape after tumbling into numerous concrete pillars. I can wave to the side when guns shoot more bullets than they can hold but the whole slow mo scene drove me nuts lol, but awesome show overall!
0:34 Now that Stephan brought up the last time he had a Redbull was during production of KNIGHT RIDER (2008), I would LOVE to see VFX artists react to KNIGHT RIDER overall. Both original series (1982-1986) and revival 2008 series. There's a TONNE of practical effects and TV magic I think the crew would love to see as well as that special late 2000s CGI for KNIGHT RIDER 2008 including transformation and even a fight scene with K.A.R.R when he's in mech form.
Here’s a bad cgi clip suggestion: in Transformers DotM, there’s a scene where Megatron is sitting on the Lincoln Memorial, and his legs are VERY obviously clipping through the stairs
As a VFX artist it's great to see an on-set sup who clearly REALLY knows his stuff. People like him are a huge asset to a show and save so much time and money. Hopefully I'll get to do some on-set supervision in the future. I was also surprised that the people flying through the air weren't CG. I was assuming they'd film all those elements in focus but that was a clever point about also pushing the focus out so you have actual reference for manipulating the focus. And pgBokeh is a great node but holy crap it's slow.
id love to see you guys react to everything everywhere all at once! the vfx was done by just 5 people and there's a lot of interesting stuff to talk about!
Gore scene: Dragged Across Concrete with Vince Vaughn as main. That had one scene in particular (which makes sense, it's in the name) which was visceral as all hell.
I think an interesting scene to remake would be the Han Solo meets Jabba the Hut remastered scene from A New Hope where Solo seems to float over Jabbas tail, would love to see what you could do with that to improve it!
Some suggestions are . . . The End Is Nye - Cool natural disaster effects, and really good green screen Resident Alien - Full CG Characters, vehicles, interesting green screen.
I’d love you to have a look at Edgar Wright’s “the worlds end” specifically any of the fight scenes with the blanks. Plenty of contact while fighting but then convincing “dismemberment “ mid fight only to then continue on fighting .
One thing that I'd love to see you guys talk about is sound effects. Sound effects are a really big and important part of movies, but no one ever talks about them in detail
The Wheel of Time really deserves a react from you guys in my opinion. The first and last episode have a lot of CGI with varying degrees of quality. Both good and not very good things to react to! I ask for this reaction every week, and will continue to do so :).

Oh and one more thing: Mariama Kamara will be on this show one day!
I love that Gunpowder was played by Sean Patrick Flanery. It was fitting seeing a Boondock Saint playing a Supe with the power of gun.
"Keep it grounded" In terms of how CGI and practical effects are used, right? Not the effect itself? Because I still have nightmares about that guy that can shrink himself. He was grounded TOO DEEP imo 😆
I understood that reference
The Boys really shows that good film making, just because you want to make art, is still possible. I think thats one reason why people like this show so much, its entertaining for the sake of being entertaining, no unnecessary extras. Additionally it has the perfect mix out of visual effect, CGI and practical effects. The jeep scene shows, practical explosions still hit different that pure CGI ones and visual effects help to make this shot better.
The boys has a really good balance of practical and VFX, and for a super hero show it's really up there competing against these super VFX rich shows and films
The CGI looks better than most MCU stuff lately, and it's embarrassing
Love love love the final trio of boys fight scene with the slightly increased speed of punches, all I ever wanted in supe films. Would be thrilled in Stephan & you boys talked about it.
I'd love to see you react to actors trying to act like they were playing music instruments. I mean, it sometimes really looks quite janky 😀
Time is precious but you can't rush this. Words to live by for whatever your passion may be.
These shows gets more and more interesting, but i really miss the bad cgi parts :(
Man, The Boys VFX crew are simply just the best in the business
I want you guys to react on a Bollywood movie brahmastra's VFX..
Plz react on it 😊
Dear god this man is so smart and the most excellent vfx guest
Please guy Brahmastra. Do a Bollywood reaction video on Brahmastar 🙏
I gotta say, one of my favourite vfx movie scenes is the atomic breath scene in shin godzilla. That scene is amazes me with how good it looks.
Bollywood movie bharmastra
0:34 Now that Stephan brought up the last time he had a Redbull was during production of KNIGHT RIDER (2008), I would LOVE to see VFX artists react to KNIGHT RIDER overall. Both original series (1982-1986) and revival 2008 series. There's a TONNE of practical effects and TV magic I think the crew would love to see as well as that special late 2000s CGI for KNIGHT RIDER 2008 including transformation and even a fight scene with K.A.R.R when he's in mech form.
please react on BHRAMASTRA movie vfx
Here’s a bad cgi clip suggestion: in Transformers DotM, there’s a scene where Megatron is sitting on the Lincoln Memorial, and his legs are VERY obviously clipping through the stairs
2:49 I have to say, Jamie’s origin story in the TV show was much better than it was in the comics
The ending to Elvis! Transition from the actor to the real elvis performance was amazing
I LOVE THE BOYS!!! GIVE US MORE!!! Not super often though. Each one feels special :) 10/10 content
Such a good episode. He is so knowledgeable and gives such clear explanations.
I find it absolutely hilarious that I've followed this series so long that even I've learnt how to spot VFX and how it's done in movies now.
I was hoping to get an insight about the cartoon cuts. But to learn about how the explosion was 90% practical was super cool
The transition from Wren rolling the dice to the title card *Chef's Kiss*
Gore scene: Dragged Across Concrete with Vince Vaughn as main. That had one scene in particular (which makes sense, it's in the name) which was visceral as all hell.
I think an interesting scene to remake would be the Han Solo meets Jabba the Hut remastered scene from A New Hope where Solo seems to float over Jabbas tail, would love to see what you could do with that to improve it!
Some suggestions are . . .
The End Is Nye - Cool natural disaster effects, and really good green screen
Resident Alien - Full CG Characters, vehicles, interesting green screen.
That explosion scene breakdown was amazing!
The Wheel of Time really deserves a react from you guys in my opinion. The first and last episode have a lot of CGI with varying degrees of quality. Both good and not very good things to react to! I ask for this reaction every week, and will continue to do so :).
I got a good one. Starship Troopers. Not only did it combine the best talent in the industry in their respective positions. But it was the apex of miniatures, stop motion and CG all combined in one. The movie still looks better than most movies today. Please break down how they achieved some of those amazing shots.
I like how the shell casing moves faster than the bullet in the gunpowder vs butcher scene.
Love that comp shot breakdown. I love the show and that scene was flawless
I love how they really express these cgi scenes as the art that it is even the bad stuff
