I believe that the people that are picking Poirier are most likely just doing it for fun, and not based on logic. volkanovski had his best moments switching stances mid combo, because it caused islam to shell up or drop his hands out of anticipation for either a big shot up top or a takedown/body shot
poirier is known to be one of the best in the ufc at switching stances mid combination, and he may have more pop in his hands than volko. that’s something to watch.
islam looks lost when he’s right up against the fence with someone in front of him. that’s where dustin does some of his best work, ripping the body and head with hooks and uppercuts. dustin can win this fight.

Plus he's such a slow starter who let his opponents engage first and let them even land on him. Don't forget that himself admitted years ago that makhachev is such a bad match-up for him.
So don't ever by into the drama buy putting some money on poirier.

The only realistic scenario for Dustin to win is to have elite takedown defense. Needs to be kept on the feet. This is similar to Leon Edwards vs Usman. Leon had a very hard time with Usman and his grappling. After he defeated him he won again in 3rd fight because of takedown defense and striking. In my opinion, if Dustin didn't train to stop takedowns and keep it standing, Islam is very likely to win.

Just re-watched Volk vs Islam 2 and though we make it seem like Volk just got caught, maan Islam hurt him early, he was throwing with bad, bad intentions you can see it in his face, even the strength advantage Volk had worked against him, Islam said he made him use too much energy in the clench and soon as they were out of it, that slight second before he recovered, he knocked his ass out.
