  • Leica meets Science: Interview with Astrid Schauss, CECAD at the University of Cologne, Germany
Astrid Schauss is head of the imaging facility of the CECAD (Excellence Cluster for Aging Research) at the University of Cologne, Germany. The CECAD imaging facility offers a broad range of state-of-the-art microscopes and supports imaging of a broad range of different model organism from bacteria, yeasts, mouse models, cell culture, C. elegans to also clinical applications. A research focus of the scientists coming to the facility is cancer and aging related research with the goal to go “from bench to bedside” in the future. Super-resolution microscopy is an important technique for the CECAD researchers as it helps to see something that they were not able to see before. Schauss likes the upgrade option of the Leica TCS SP8. “When you start off with your application, you don’t know how the research will develop. Especially in imaging facilities, we need to be flexible. And this flexibility is what I really like about the system.” She is also excited about the DLS light sheet module that can be added to the Leica TCS SP8. She thinks that the idea of light sheet microscopy for developmental biology is great, but up to now there have not been enough applicants to buy a standalone light sheet microscope. Being asked for her experience in working together with Leica Microsystems, Schauss is positive: “I always had a very good impression. And whatever they promised me so far, it turned out fine.”
