- African Americans are trooping to Ghana as the country marks the Year of Return, in memory of 400 years since the first slave-ship landing In Virginia. An African American professor of African studies Tani Sanchez, from Los Angeles, went on a heritage tour with her daughter this August to honour her ancestors and find her roots. CGTN's Wilkister Nyabwa has that story.

Majority of the slaves were not from present-day Ghana. The tribes in the coastal states of present day Ghana were collaborators who had castles and forts built on their lands as slave holding dungeons and they profited in this evil trade from the white man.

Having just returned from my spiritual pilgrimage to Elmina castle and Assin Manso in Ghana. It pains my soul to read some of the comments from my African brothers the spite being exchanged leads me to think it is very possible that we could quite easily repeat the mistakes of the past 400 years and sell each other into bondage. Asante are not an ethnic group FYI Akan is the ethnic group.
The Asante are a subgroup of the the Akan ethnic group. Just like the Fanti and others distributed across Ivory Coast , Ghana (where they are the majority) and Togo. I know this because though i look white European, I have great grandparents who are Asante from Nsuta and great grandparents who are Ga from Kanashie in Accra (the Ga’s who have adopted many Akan customs due to assimilation are not Akans). The Ga’s belong to the Gbe language group. That’s Ga-Adangbe, Ayigbe (Ewe of Volta region and Togo) and Fongbe of Benin (formerly Dahomey). The Gbe language are related to the Yoruboid languages originating from Ile Ife in south western Nigeria.

Our roots I don't think will be in Ghana, it could be but I don't think so. I think more towards Nigeria where the Igbo and the Yoruba people are amongst other places because dark skinned people were held in Ghana cells.

What types of things are lacking in these countries that people need to be aware of?
I'm referring to things like infrastructure,healthcare and law enforcement? You may want to know the situation with these types of things before you move to a poorer country.

If I'm not wrong, Ghana is the only country in Africa which granting african disaporas who settle in Ghana to become Ghana citizen by hosting the Year of Return. Ghana government tried their best to attract African American and Afro-Caribean to Ghana in order to reconnect them to the Africa continent.
