Wizards of the Coast is in some hot water after standing against the use of AI art and then allegedly using AI art in a marketing tweet. That caused Dave Rapoza to quit and multiple artists to leave or speak out as well.

As an update, Wizards admitted that "AI components MAY HAVE crept into marketing creative..."
Their tweet here: x.com/wizards_magic/status/1744056808254173447?s=20
Jason Rainville has also retracted the tweet in this video and has stated his satisfaction with WOTC's response.
I think people are completely fooled by the world they live in.
Its about doing the least possible that will make people buy.
A good example is food. Mc Donald's ADs show a big juicy burger, but instead you get a synthetic patty that's maybe less than half the size. People have been buying it for years.
Mc Donald's spent over 1 million dollars to figure out how to sell fries that taste good cheaply. Most people dont even know that they put sugar on the fries and cook it in synthetic beef flavoring. People still buy it.
The use of AI art is the same and will be due to its economical benefits. Once AI art fixes these flaws that people can identify it will be widely used and people wont even know the difference. Literally the same with food.
People eat for taste and are willing to eat garbage as long as it has some sauce and tastes good.
Love Rapoza's art, shame to see him leave. But I understand, sympathize, and support his move.
Same and same. Hoping he reconsiders, but I don't know.
I applaud you Joel for your presentation here. These things matter A LOT. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. Well done
Appreciate you watching, tried to be fair and thorough
Exactly. Generative AI is getting pretty common in advertising, but to take a stance that you won't use it full-stop and then use it anyway (whether intentional or not) is questionable. For a product that has artwork as its chief selling-point, they should be way more diligent about ensuring they don't use AI art!
Yea I’ve decided to boycott Hasbro for a while. I know I’m just one person but I do believe closing our wallets is the only way to save these communities
Sorry it has to go like this ! Strength and wisdom mate , 🤘🦁🤘
@@savannahlion3081 yea I’ll still play the game I just won’t be supporting any upcoming MTG sets or the upcoming D&D stuff.
Truth spoken
Truth spoken
Your not alone. Haven’t bought anything from that company in over a year.
Wizards/Hasbro can’t even get a week into the new year without some controversy
This is bigger than just art.
AI can eventually replace a lot of jobs.
But I really agree with what you said Joel about knowing your audience. The art is a big part of MTG, and collectors/players want to see cool new (real) art from their favorite artists.
When it comes to advertising, I don't care what a company uses to create the advertisements. But the card art for MTG is sacred, and don't even think about using AI to create them.
If ai shows up noticeably in cards, can you imagine the response?
WELL , fully agree with you both .... but in honesty, 75% of the playing audience could not care less... if it halves prices, they would throw them all in front of a bus .... be sure, this is NOT my opinion, but look at what has been done in reprint value... new players (2-3 years since C-vid boredom) don't understand nor care .... And furthermore, already said in own comment that progress cannot be stopped... in 5 years time AI will make Rembrandt's Indistinguishable from real ... and then? Artists better incorporate it or it will become the new "KODAK Moment" .... remember they said digital photo's would never hit ground...... just sain boys, I am an old timer, but watch the future, cuz it WILL be... 🤘🦁🤘
Personally I don’t care if they used AI art for an ad.
And if they ever do use it for card art they’ll have to credit someone on the card with the illustration so we’d know which ones had it and anyone who doesn’t like AI art will know. However the Ai arts speed cannot be beat and it will only get better at details and the cost is going to sway WOTC heavily. We know this. I for one will still play even if they use AI exclusively. It’s inevitable
Its capitalism and artists should’ve heard the canary in the coal mine by now. Adapt or be replaced by AI, that’s just how it goes.
Truth be told, our player base in MTG is run by a bunch of Commies that would rather see the Trading and Collectible be removed from TCG.@@JakeandJoelareMagic
I love that Joel called the little cylinder pieces "grinders" because I totally thought the same thing. 😂
if you know you know
Long time collector and player of mtg. After coming back to Magic after a 10 yr break. I found myself narrowing / selectively collecting cards with Rebecca Guay art. A natural progression after the ridiculous number of new products that have come out over the last few years. RG is favorite of mine from back in the day. AI has its place but please not on my Magic cards! These artists are talented and should be celebrated, enjoyed and Magic cards are the perfect canvas for original human art.
Love your point about know your audience and understand your customer. The only reason I buy Secret Lairs is for the art. The one thing that gets me excited about a new set or chasing down some specific replacement cards for my commander decks is the art. I was a Scott Fischer fan before I started playing magic and he is a big reason why I got excited to play and become serious about it rather than just as a side thing I occasionally played with my friends who were looking for another to fill an empty spot in a draft.
MTG largely comes back to the art as a primary pillar of the game
As a MTG player, we are trained to examine and nitpick. How did Wizards think they could try to so blatantly bamboozle us? Half of our lives are based on what happens before and after a colon. We see everything.
Always watching
@@JakeandJoelareMagic what an intangible virtue
I’m a graphic designer for the sign industry. This was a hot topic for a bit. It turns out that yes, it would make everyone an artist skilled or not. But it has definitely impacted the industry. It’s has really cut our cost and boosted turnaround time.
Looked forward to seeing his work on a Sorcery card
To be fair, an ad is not a product.
Shoutout to the grinder boys…wait not like that
RIP your DMs
Caught in 4K lmfao
“If you know, you know” was the best part of the video! Thanks for being honest and transparent! Best of luck in 2024!!
They're liars, yet we expect them not to lie? And, that's a grinder....
The quality of MtG art is dropping for a long time. Persecution against certain artists, art direction acting in an authoritarian and hypocritical manner, bad artists being hired for reasons beyond competence and poor quality control.
Now this.
MtG unironically lost the soul.
ill never understand how an entire group of people managed to incapably recognize that the BACKGROUND is ai but the CARD ART IS NOT
That pic is 110% AI generation.
Well, I guess I'll put in my 2 cents too. I really don't care much where my art comes from. I care what it looks like. I have always admired MTG art. The best stuff could be blown up and put on your wall. It is gorgeous. My mother got into Magic. She doesn't play at all, but during Throne of Eldraine she began collecting the cards that have art she likes. The art of Magic is integral to the game. I have to admit, I can't tell much difference in a simple picture like the one you showed us, but I also can't see AI today being able to replicate the gorgeous art MTG is famous for.
I’m taking this year off from WOTC. No new cards. No secret lairs. No boosters or boxes. Every card I ever purchased “ non Reserve List “ has tanked after all these reprints.
The player base is aging out and selling off collections driving old reserve list cards down in price.
The new players are not nostalgic about the old stuff so if WOTC wants they can reprint mechanically similar cards with better upside to get around the reserve list.
poorly management company.
Yes, although not as extreme as people are trying to make it. Reserve list prices have gone down. I'm almost finished selling the remainder of mine
So, like it was mentioned in the video, AI is not good enough to meet the industry standard to use on finished products, so its less of a moral stand to begin with. Right now the artists who's jobs are threatened by AI are largely concept artists. I thought WotC didn't get enough credit back when they printed the Praetors with concept art as a special treatment (don't remember which Phyrexian set it was), but thats really just boosting behind the scenes artist into the limelight. Its amazing that those artists got pushed in a positive direction, but printing and selling concept art and then using AI for at least some part of promotional images means that the job of creating art behind the scenes (or outside the spotlight in this case) is disappearing, just like every other company.
It's a scary direction forward but we'll see where adjustments happen. Painters called photography the end of art when the camera was invented
@@JakeandJoelareMagicThat kind of happened. I can name more than a few modern photographers but have no clue on painters.
I suspect the guy in charge of the advertisement got lazy and used AI thinking no one including the higher up would notice. Its very possible the higher ups had no idea some AI was used in the ad creation. Just my 2 cents.
I'd replace lazy with overworked here, let's blame Hasbro and not WOTC for this, I love blaming Hasbro
Can't wait to go to a Con and get the A.I. to sign my card.
To be fair, like you stayed earlier, this is just marketing and promotional material not a final magic product like they stated in their release.
However, why lie? Just say yeah, we used it in marketing and this in no way should be taken as an endorsement of using AI for card art.
It would have ruffled feathers but at least in the most honest way
@@JakeandJoelareMagic Exactly. When they lied to hide it, it was an admission that they knew it was wrong. If they had just come out and said what they did they can just say "Ok guys. This didn't violate what we said in our previous statement and this is common practice in marketing departments for major corporations but we see how upset this has made the community and moving forward we will be sure to turn to our team of amazing artists for promotional materials".
Fair enough. I am losing interest myself.
We are talking about the backdrop of a promo picture??? Why is this news?
I immediately went to that's a weed grinder 😂
iykyk
It's AI art.... It's pretty simple
Yup... and more to follow, and then on the cards themselves. 🤘🦁🤘
@@savannahlion3081 nooooooooooo
Cool, does that mean we can get Terese Nielsen back?
I don’t buy anything D&D any more. And any mtg I get as singles from LGS and online games
These Edison bulbs are iconic and have been around for over 100 years. Everyone knows what they look like and its a simple design. Idk why you would even claim this looks normal.
Edison never went, "and then we add AN INSANE AMOUNT OF FILAMENTS, GOING EVERY WHICH DIRECTION!!" when he was inventing?
@@JakeandJoelareMagic
You weren't there- he made hundreds of attempts to figure out what worked best. Maybe he saw his child's crazy scribble drawing and said, "THAT'S going to work, as long as there's a grinder on the table nearby!"
@@mountainghoti1671 I never considered that Edison was into gardening
@@JakeandJoelareMagic
He did have a very odd sleep schedule...
You know about the 'medicine' they used- actual coke?! Laudanum, Absinthe!?!
WOTC just keep embarrassing themselves ..
The only thing that seems weird in the picture to me is the window in the background, how the window panes look off. The thing that was scrutinized too much in my opinion looks like a tube amp. "What's this knob on the front?" Dude, tube amps have knobs, wires, connections, etc. That "meat grinder" just looks like a rusty can cut in half.
I really don't care if AI art is used.
I’m sure FAB or Sorcery will welcome him with open arms 😂
Exactly what I was thinking 😁
Definitely not buying new product from WOTC anytime soon. Best way to support your LGS while not supporting WOTC is to buy singles, it’ll save you money in the long run as well so everyone but WOTC wins
Is seb mackinnon still working for wizards? Or is he still black listed for having an opinion on something?
Maybe Hasbro fired the guy that was responsible to double check to make sure AI art is not used during december layoff?
I've always thought the images they have with actual cards being displayed were either actually set up and videos or photo shopped.
when humans fear their replacement.
"That" Looks like an AI generated 2 stroke piston.
The image isn’t a product. It’s an ad. This whole thing is being over blown. Artists can complain all they want but you can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Ai art will be ubiquitous in 3 years and you won’t be able to tell the difference. Human art will become niche because AI can do it faster and MUCH cheaper. It’s inevitable
I think it has to be utilized and will be. Artists worth their salt know what it can and can’t do and are learning day by day as it does. The fact we can call it out easily still is a good sign, what isn’t is companies defending bottles turning into books halfway down a shelf and say it was hand drawn.
Great point about profiting from treatments and art styles.
Haven't bought sealed product since DMs 2022 and Neon Dynasty. Selling off my collection, leaving only the constructed decks I play. Getting close to walking away from mtg altogether. The opportunity cost is very high now given how expensive new sets are.
Disgusting. Unacceptable. *checks pre order for Ravnica Remastered* I can't believe this
Lmao you nailed it.
how could they do this. i can't understand. *checks what time modern is on Friday, checks TCG order ETA* unbelievable
All over art for the worst set release in years. What a shame
Just another common WOTC L. Nothing new.
Who cares? It’s a promotion tweet. It’s not even card art. Everyone crying for no reason.
It's the follow up tweet that's the kicker. They denied something obvious
You have a point, but where does it end.... 🤘🦁🤘
Hey google, show me a generic steam punk scene.
Your flesh is a relic. Hand over your flesh. A New World Awaits. They demand it.
So from what I can gather people are mad at the tweet denying it? There statement doesn't say anything about a boring marketing social post. It commits to the product itself which seems absolutely the right move to me
It depends - if customers care about the change, it's a bad move. Time will tell. I personally would rather have artists create the work, which give it identity. While it doesn't affect gameplay, some care about the art and that's understandable.
Yeah, not cool Hasbro! Don’t fucking use AI Art period. Don’t use it even to promote your products! The artists and the fans, at least this one, will not support it!
Don't like the AI in card art but advertising...MAYBE. I wish there would be more people to take stands like this on a number of issues with WOTC. Like the video!
There's always the possibility that an artist sold it to WotC as an original work. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know.
5:50 That's exactly what I thought it was at first. WoTC did magical angel dust in SNC so why not? lol
All of the cards are incorrect
Some were guild gates some were shocks but they don’t do anything, just the shockland ability. They don’t tap for mana (unlike the guild gates)
Hello Dave, welcome to Flesh and Blood, we think you're gonna love it here! 😁
Funny to see Rainville try to delicately balance his love of moral grandstanding and job security. Rapoza dropped his gun and badge on the desk like a badass, meanwhile Rainville is sitting there like a Karen asking to speak to the manager. It's a shame that the quality artist had to leave while the soulless talent will probably find a reason to come crawling back to the WotC teat if he can.
Who cares if AI art is in advertisements? The card art is what matters
You think hasboro gives a shit about its artists in mtg? Shocking.
Wizards continues to lie to our face. Sadly, AI can replace so many people in different industries. Thank you for the video.
So did the camera, automobile, printing press, computer, etc. You have to adapt.
This is such a generic backdrop. You could just put these cards behind an iconic card art backdrop. What a sad hill for Wotc to die on.
Tempest in a teacup? The AI was not used to create MTG cards, just an advertisement. Sorry, I don't see why everyone is clutching their pearls on this.
Adobe releasing their generative tools in both PSD and Illustrator this last major release has probably broken a lot the ability to track whether or not it's being used,.
Some of that could be explained by content aware fill jank.
“Art” is subjective. AI is replacing many within almost all facets of industry. Progress, right? Skynet thanks you.
Thats 100% AI
Personally it don't matter to me weather they use AI art or not. Just be forthcoming with what you're doing.
Joel looks suspiciously handsome in this video. I clearly see definitive studmuffin artifacts around the hair and facial areas. Not cool! Gotta know your audience braaah 😂
Yesterday. Wotc stated that the art was created by a human not by ai.
They should start crediting the artists on their promotional stuff if for no other reason than to mitigate these accusations.
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you may not have seen this.
I personally think Dave Rapoza was too quick to pull the trigger on leaving. As just because art is bad, doesn't mean it is a.i. generated.
Also, they are showcasing cards they have printed a billion times
Flesh, and blood, is getting another artist.....
Looks like AI to me
How’s putting something in my cart from your sponsor helping you?
A.I. Am Inevitable.
The hypocrisy is the real issue. Not an AI art fan, but it's here, so we need to figure out what is socially acceptable.
once people accept it, their lives will get better.
Once it becomes impossible to tell the difference people will forget about this issue and move on to the next thing.
The AI grinder is for mono green players only
This looks more like photobashing and overpainting in concept art, particularly photoshop, than generative AI to me. I'm only a hobbyist in both so I may be wrong.
Same, that's why I can't make a true call on it. I can just point out stuff that looks like what I've seen before
The artifacts he is mentioning look like a stretch to me.
"If you know, you know" lol
has anyone thought that a lowly design intern could be using some AI to do backgrounds for some of the post?? send the hate to the departments....
😢RIP WOTC 😮😊😂hopefully y'all don't own any HASBRO stock! 👇 with AI
Well hopefully wotc exists until magic con October 26 weekend!
Good! WotC is a sham. Its all about money now, not the game.
The grinder lololol
not sure what you're talking about ;)
Hope it was made by AI. If it was a person, this video would obliterate their self esteem :P
😂 art critiques can be rough, but it makes the computer that drew this a stronger person 💪
Day 13 asking Joel to sing “got another thing comin’” at the beginning of all the videos
Joel, please get back to Jacob on this.
I don't like a.i. art but this seems overblown
Now “Artist” could be using it and lying to them idk 🤔
These seems like a lot of ppl mad to what amounts as a background image
As long as artists get credit for the card arts they do I could careless what the marketing of a product is
not the grazer!!!!!
Dude, I ain't bought MTG products since their response to the inherent NEED for Alpha/Beta/Unlimited reprints was that crappy overpriced 30th Anniversary trash. Them using AI isn't even an issue, the issue with AI is stupid people not understanding the basics, like, for starters, it's not actually AI at all, it's just an algorithm, and the data sets publicly available AI Art tools use aren't publicly sourced, as in they aren't stealing anyone's art, no matter how much some illiterate fools claim they are. Now, does that make it ok to use AI over real artists if you're a big corporate entity like WotC, and without it being the actual theme of a specific run? No, of course not, AI Art tools are specifically for those that AREN'T visually artistically talented, a corporate entity can afford to pay real people, AI is for the poor, obviously.
Is anyone surprised? They just laid off a huge chunk of their art department.
not surprised its how the western world works. Many middle to lower class dont understand how the world works so complaining about such things is actually trival.
lol
sorry, I dont get it a all. The AI-Art (if it is AI-Art) is not on the cards. And the "we dont want to use AI-Art" was defenetly about the cards. I see that this is something realy important to artists but that is an overreaction
Proxy is the way.
ai art just has no soul, uncanny it always just feels off yk?
AI is inevitable
Good riddance Dave. The art has always been one of the least important aspects of the game for me so if he wants to dip out it won't make a difference for 90% or more of players.
