I’m not sure if this is normal, but lately, I’ve been watching awesome quality content from channels with less than 1000 subscribers. These new channels seem to have much, much better content than the popular ones. This is a great example.
13 years old and still better than a dang iPhone. I tell budget filmmakers all the time that there are excellent DSLR’s for CHEAP that give you MUCH more creative control, low light performance, and of course being able to use actual lenses than using a phone. This is a great example.
Why you comparing a camera and a phone bro. It’s like comparing an iPad to a laptop 😂 many people like to make that comparison. Because they can achieve similar things. But a camera, will always be a camera. And a phone will always be a phone. Same as how a tablet will always be a tablet, and a laptop will always be a laptop.
bro didn't just blurt out theoretical stuff, but actually made us believe and let us to be our own judge ! absolutely the kind of video i was searching!
Absolutely love you made this video, specifically for SHOWING you using the gear that "doesn't matter" I totally agree, it doesn't, but sometimes it does. And for certain jobs, you want that crisp 4k image that's crystal clear. But, sometimes you wanna shoot on an old point and shoot 720p camera, just to get a certain vibe. Gear matters, but on matters for what look and story you want to tell. All in all, great video, and loved the pacing of it all!
I’m looking for my first camera for several years and this video was eye opening. I feel like I’ve seen every video about cameras but this was a beautiful work of art. Totally impressed and my views changed on cameras
After having a t3i for 10 years, I just learned yesterday how to change the aperture. You hold the AV (+/-) button (above the Q) and scroll the wheel at the top. This whole time I thought it was worse in low light than it is
All of this, but especially that documentary sequence, makes me want to never shoot anything again. You're out here putting on an absolute clinic/masterclass.
Talk about the right message for the right day! I’ve been telling myself I need to make videos again, trying to figure out what’s holding me back… and it wasn’t the camera. Thanks Ross! Great video!
You really made that T3i look great. I appreciate the work that went into this video, it feels like lately every single month sometimes week after week a new camera is being released and its tough out here having gear lust. Even when owning very capable camera's just missing out on 1 new spec can make 1 feel inadequate and the need to upgrade. This is very refreshing take.
I couldn't even make it half way through without subscribing. Lots of funny moments, amazing production value and it was relatively short. All big plusses for me. For my journey with photography, I find that the tools that you use are important, but the skill to use them is even more important. You demonstrated this very well by using entry level gear and creating interesting and engaging content. I am a tool collector because I like to be well equipped and I enjoy the different flairs that different tools can throw into mix. The only two cameras that I bought new was Canon EOS XTi and the Canon EOS 40D. I have bought only used gear ever since then (like 2008). I discovered very quickly that good quality glass makes a pretty big difference. My first L lens was a 24-105mm, and while it's one of the least regarded L lenses, it was my most influential lens. I was blessed back then to pick up a used 1D Mark III for ultra cheap, and it was this combination that rocketed me to a world that amplified how I felt holding a camera, creating art with a camera, and putting in work with a camera. How a camera makes you feel, how it inspires you to create, is pretty important for me. The 1D series always felt right in my hands, the controls were easy to use and I didn't worry about harming the camera itself. I currently have a 1Ds Mark III and a 1DX Mark II for my Pro bodies and still love how the camera feels like it's part of me. I have other, newer, more capable bodies, but they are smaller in form factor and don't give me that excitement. I have a surgically precise 24mp Sony that creates absolutely stunning photos, but the joy of using my 1Ds just can't be matched. The Sony has better DR, Less noise, better AF, IBIS, more MP's, more built in creative tools, Video, and on and on, but the 1Ds can't be matched for that joy of use. My 1Dx II however is better than the Sony in many respects. :P I'm going down a crazy rabbit hole here now. Long story short, thanks for the awesome video this morning. ^_^
the gear nerd in me immediately thought of "CF card pain"/"discontinued battery"/Magic Lantern + Manual Focus.. Great Video!! Love the creative and cinematic approach to the age-old question, my favourite yet! - lemme watch it again
Justo wow! I purchased a Canon Eos Rebel SL1 to learn how to use this type of cameras, but what you did was amazing. Thaks for the video, new sub from Mexico
In my opinion, it does. I recently bought an old Olympus compact and I've had more fun with that little camera than I've had with my Canon DSLR in months, I've also been shooting way more and getting better results with less attempts. It's not so much about the image quality of the thing but more about having a good user experience, an old premium camera will give you a better experience than a new budget one and that's very important.
I use the t3i for most things it’s perfect, BUT, it has huge limitations in certain aspects I wouldn’t recommend it for sports photography or any photography with constantly fast moving objects. You can use it for that, I have and got some good photos with it but the limitations are obvious to someone who’s been doing photography for a couple years. As for lenses I use a 50mm, 24-55mm, and a 55-250mm I also have access to a Sigma 150-600mm and a 75-300mm though those last two are not mine. I think the three I own are fine but I still wish to upgrade later on, the only lens I wouldn’t recommend is the 75-300mm it’s fine but has some issues such as purple and green fringing, instead get a 55-250 which doesn’t have that issue. Right now I’m thinking of up grading to a full frame either the 5d mark 1, mark 2, or the canon 1dx mark 1 and eventually getting a 24-70 f/2.8 a 85mm f/1.8 and a 70-200 f/2.8 if and when I can afford to(aka never💀) there’s of course better cameras and lenses that’s I’d prefer but they’re way out of price range for me and I believe the options I’m thinking of will do fine Overall imo the gear you have doesn’t matter to a certain extent I was in a congressional art competition for my school last year and the photo that got me in was taken on my friends iPhone at the end of the day you can get great photos with a couple hundred dollar set up but when you notice your not getting the shots you want due to your camera burst being too slow, your censor being too small, or your lens not having the desired sharpness or aperture it might be time to upgrade.
Should be obvious but I’m a photographer not a videographer so I can only speak on the photography side of my gear. Though I hope one day I can get into videography.
You could honestly shoot 95 percent of what you ever would want to shoot with two prime lenses. And a prime lens will simplify the whole photography processes giving you more focused distinctive results over a zoom. Lastly a prime will give you the sharpness and image clarity that you want. It should be obvious but zooms make your style inconsistent as every single shot in-between (the widest and most tele) will be at a different random focal length changing the perception of depth a lot between different images.
Man! Even though I knew after the first few seconds which direction your video was going in and I always talk about cameras not being important, I was thrilled from start to finish. Your video showed even better that you don't need modern technology to produce modern videos! Keep up the great work:)
I wanted to watch the whole thing before commenting because I wasn’t sure if you were going to say it but you did. It 100% does matter just not in the ways you expect it to. I shot on a t3i in my freshman film class and the camera worked great but boy was it a pain in the ass. And it was still fairly new then. I’ve had a canon m50 since release and it’s great but I never wanted to use it. You have to find grease that inspires you and gets out of your way if you want the end result to be your best work but you can’t just use gear as an excuse to not create. There’s gotta be a balance
I've been looking to get into my first camera, not specifically for film making but recording is definitely a part of it, and seeing a T3i (a camera that to me is at the lowest of lowest) do so good makes me realize that I should just stick to my original budget instead of some expensive camera, since for what I want to do I will need some good and expensive lenses sadly lol
Fantastic! Been contemplating buying one of these for a while. Used to have one way back when and I know it still can perform today, which you proved so brilliantly. Kinda wanna just have it for nostalgia. Great job, great video.

I also have a Canon T5 that I recently used for filming the CSX Santa Train, but I rarely use it for filming, too. I guess it was like, okay, let's see what this camera can do film-wise. Funnily enough, often times the limitations of some (older) equipment do more for photography than to just have everything (too many options). very underrated, great video ross! by the way, do you mind sharing the limitations of this specific camera and how you work around them? i'm also interested in picking up a t3i, and better yet if u have any other similar recommendations for a video camera in this price range please give me your thoughts. anyways thanks for the video, really needed this one since i'm currently looking for my first ever camera to buy and learn.
The T3i really surprised me and was a lot of fun to use. The two biggest limitations were low light and I had a tough time with pulling focus on the monitor. Anything higher than 800 ISO the image became very noisey. Other than that, it was great! I certainly recommend the camera, especially with how affordable it is and how many lenses are available for it on the used market.
Great video, but you forgot to mention the lens here. Those ones really matters, especially in videography. It’s clear that you haven’t used the kit lens here. But great video, honestly 🫡
Damn🔥🔥🔥, how did you get such deep filmic colors. Could you please share what picture profile and grading process you used because it's really a cinematic masterpiece.
I shot everything at 24FPS. The kit lens was stabilized which helped but the 50mm was not and was tougher to hold steady. Practice makes perfect! Get out there and start shooting!
In photography the camera body is actually 100% the least important part. But in filmmaking it's much more important. Even though you can create something really good with a cheap bottom of the barrel camera, you still need lights, a location, a story and shit - but ultimately 1080p25 from a 2011 DSLR doesn't look very nice nowadays when every youtuber and their mother shoots the newest sony mirrorless with some $3K prime
What. The. Heck. The algorithm did you so dirty on this one. This is better quality that I've seen in a very long time.
The algorithm works in mysterious ways. Thanks for checking out the video.

No I only used the kit lens and the 50mm I showed in the video. That’s it.
Nice video bro😍
my 5dmk2 and ef35f14 and85f18 are still ok even a lot look down on me for this old gear
The canon 5D mark 2 is one of the best cameras of all time.
I got a nice lil chuckle out of 1:17 :)
Please please please break down your workflow, I have a similar camera and have not been able to figure out how to make it look good.
I am going to make a video on how I colour my videos and should give you some insight into my process. Thanks for watching.
Canon Rebel 3ti, Canon 2000D
Release date: 7 February 2011
I have one of these Canon Rebel. 😅
deserved my sub
*subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada ❤
Damn🔥🔥🔥, how did you get such deep filmic colors. Could you please share what picture profile and grading process you used because it's really a cinematic masterpiece.
I’ll be doing a video on how I colour my videos 👍
Nice one 👏
I’m using a T3i rn and this just inspired me. What setting are you using on the camera? My footage is always shaky af handheld
I shot everything at 24FPS. The kit lens was stabilized which helped but the 50mm was not and was tougher to hold steady. Practice makes perfect! Get out there and start shooting!
Amazing vid, thank you! I know you used the canon t6i did you use an nd filter for any of this seing that the camera looked so crispy
I used the canon T3i and I did not use any ND filters
In photography the camera body is actually 100% the least important part. But in filmmaking it's much more important. Even though you can create something really good with a cheap bottom of the barrel camera, you still need lights, a location, a story and shit - but ultimately 1080p25 from a 2011 DSLR doesn't look very nice nowadays when every youtuber and their mother shoots the newest sony mirrorless with some $3K prime
What did you do to the footage to make a Canon T3i look like this? Night and day from SOOC, that's for sure.
Wohhhhhhh... That's crazy
