This is for me a truly great find. I am so glad that someone like yourself has bothered to preserve Alan Taylors memoirs of Southport. My intention would be to add to it and bring it up to modern times, if only for my own reference and joy and maybe others who share a similar interest. I am no professional but at would want to produce something that brings credit to your endeavours and that of Mr Taylor. I believe I know the specific whereabouts of the 'chuckerdown hall' that was referred to which is at least a start. Winston Churchill frequently visited Southport and stayed at the hall as a guest of his friend the Baron. Alan Taylor I believe wrote several journals about Southport but your collection is magical as it brings his personal account back to life. I will let you know if I put something together and credit you accordingly. Many thanks for sharing this archive.
The name Southport was derived from the area from where it sprang, South Hawes. The area was actually south of a safe anchorage, known as Faircloughs lake where ships involved in smuggling could sail into. Duke Suttons Hotel was allegedly christened by his friend Doctor Miles Barton at the opening night.
Birkdale historian? AJL Taor isn't it? It's a good little film, but though he was born in Southport, a constituency which includes Birkdale, he didn't stay here long. Glad I found this one.. But, when he says no one could drink out of this beer vessel I can't help thinking you poor deluded and historicist thing you. They used to make them tough in those days. Even the Soviet Union, in spite of much propaganda to the contrary their propaganda), and he was a commy, knew that not everyone's the same, physically.
