TTC 510 Spadina Replacement Buses in Horrible Traffic

  • Starting in June 2024, the Toronto Transit Commission suspended streetcar service on Spadina Avenue from Queen's Quay to Spadina Station in order to complete various construction projects along the streetcar ROW as well as at Spadina Station. During the suspension, improved streetcar service would be provided on route 509 Harbourfront, with streetcar replacement buses operating in mixed traffic between Queen's Quay and Spadina Station. Just a few days in to the operation of the route 510 Spadina Replacement Buses, the glacial pace of these buses in what was already terrible traffic became so bad as to attract attention from many of the Torontonian media outlets. During the recording of this video, on July 4, 2024, several reporters were conducting a race between different modes of transportation from Spadina Station to Queen's Quay along Spadina Avenue. The results of their test were not flattering for the TTC. The following day, the TTC announced that, effective Monday, July 8, 510 Spadina Replacement Buses would no longer travel the entire length of Spadina Avenue to Queen's Quay in the afternoon rush hour when traffic was the worst, turning back using Front Street and Blue Jays Way. Yet another perfect example of the TTC's willingness to just throw an insane amount of busses at any problem they have. Surprising that it works so well, till you get to something like this of course.

It's a great situation for someone who would like to get out and see a ton of buses all in one location.

Reminds me of the 77 Spadina bus route before it was replaced by the 510 streetcar route.

8:46, the sound of a go or via train in the background

It was VIA 76. Good ear.

I have attempted to take the 510 a total of zero times since the buses started running on that route. Too slow and it is now almost impossible for me to get to Queen's Quay without backtracking as I would have had to go to Union Station then backtrack to Spadina/Queen's Quay from there

Even if the buses did run down to Queen's Quay all day, it would be faster to get off at Front Street and walk. You'd definitely beat the bus.

At this point I really don't know what's worse. Living Downtown Toronto or living in Scarborough. I think I'd hate both equally.

There's a lot to love about Toronto, but certainly not the traffic situation.

Is the streetcar lane too narrow for the busses?

This is the TTC's claim, that buses would be unable to pass one another on the ROW.
