O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee. I lay in dust, life’s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red, life that shall endless be. What a stunning picture of what sustains us, the blood of Christ. And what a gorgeous rendition, slow and thoughtful so that we can ponder each word sung by such angelic voices! Praise God!
I’ve heard it said that older people love these old hymns because of nostalgic memories of “the good old days in the little church they grew up in” Hmmm. I’m older … but I didn’t grow up in church … some of these hymns I’ve never heard until now. Amazing how the truth in these lyrics are as powerful as ever! Thank you for the blessing of bringing this song to a new generation of us late boomer bloomers. Love you guys!!!
The truth is older hymns usually are rooted to the Truth. Hence bereft of empty, meaningless words. It is the acknowledging of Truth that we who are drawn to these songs truly rejoice in.
If you are listening to this, wondering if there is a Jesus- He is real. He's complete, tender love and He wants to know you. Look for Him and you'll easily find Him.
Written by a fellow Scotsman in the 1700s, after a particularly severe trial in his life. He said it came to him as if the angels themselves had whispered in his ear, and the man who wrote the music said something similar. Certainly a song the Holy Spirit meant to edify for centuries.
I have been longing for an arrangement that would do justice to this amazing song. And this morning, having gone through a trial, He lifted my sorrow with the remembrance of this song in my heart. So precious is our Lord! I then googled the song and found this amazing rendition! Tears!! And it was recorded in 2022! Thanking and Praising Him for using you to His Glory, and for our wonderful benefit! Thank you Josh, for posting! 🙏
Listening and meditating on the words to this song yields an immense level of spirit and soul weeping in me. I hope I’m not the only one. Oh how He loves us. Thank you guys for the most beautiful rendition of it that I’ve ever heard.
Kirsten you’ve a beautifully soft sincere voice a wonderful blend of two amazing voices. I remember hearing a lovely man always choose this hymn each time he came to preach at a tiny chapel. His struggles were immense. He had a very disabled wife he had to lift into the car, then drive to preach, and she sat all the time in the car patiently waiting. For many years, he did this in all weathers. his face radiated Jesus. His choice always this hymn. Thank you ❤️
Thanks for sharing, But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard - pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken;struck down, but not destroyed - always carrying around in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested on our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you. The death that was working in the preacher become life for us.
George Mathewson (1842- 1906) . Penned the words to this hymn by the inspiration of the holy spirit at a point in time of his life when he was going through great pains and mental and spiritual anguish, God was comforting him by his holy Reed off his of the very words of this hymn. This man had a real walk with God, "in short that going into 2 much detail Jesus was saying he will never let him go no matter what is happening to him, words from the lord Jesus will always strengthen and encourage an individual not just only for present but for always, there is nobody like Jesus, he is the bestest friend anybody could have. "So still think this to be a nostalgic hymn?....,..(selah) thankyou H heavenly father for Jesus THE CHRIST.
I’m old and have loved this beautiful prayer/hymn my whole life. I don’t always appreciate what the younger generation does with the dear old favorites I grew up with but I find this a totally appropriate and sensitive and lovely rendition. It brings the tears the same way it did when I first heard it in that small church that was a cathedral to me with my mother playing the organ. Thank you. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!❤
Beautiful hymn from : Tom Fettke / George Matheson / Albert Peace (1882) Oh love that will not let me go I rest my weary soul in thee I give thee back the life I owe That in thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be Oh light that followest all my way I yield my flickering torch to thee My heart restores its borrowed ray That in thy sunshine's blaze its day May brighter, fairer be Oh joy that seekest me through pain I cannot close my heart to thee I trace the rainbow through the rain And feel the promise is not vain That morn shall tearless be Oh cross that liftest up my head I dare not ask to fly from thee I lay in dust's life's glory dead And from the ground there blossoms red Life that shall endless be
Thank you all for this precious hymn today. My heart has been crushed the last two and a half weeks as our precious son lost his battle with PTSD. The Lord has been so gracious and kind and beyond faithful to bring the encouragement of His Word to my heart. This hymn has been a comforting confirmation of His presence and never ending love for me through this dark valley. May He minister to many more through your diligent service to our Lord's Kingdom. ❤️🙏🏼❤️
MillieJ O'Neel Hi Millie, hang on there dear one. I praise God for your unwavering Faith even through this very crushing time. Please remember, "A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice." (Isa 42:3) So, just as He continues to encourage us as we battle the ills & evils of this world, apart from the trials and tribulations that come from the devil, the Lord Himself will not subject us to anything of the sort. Just as it is written, for eg. Rev 2:24-25, "...I WILL NOT IMPOSE ANY OTHER BURDEN ON YOU. ONLY HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL I COME." Be strong and trust in His unfailing Goodness at all times. God be with you and sustain you.
So sweet and beautiful. Balm for the struggling soul, especially! A wonderful blend of your two voices plus the soothing instruments in the background. Surely, this is one anthem every Christian can sing as they make their pilgrimage through earthly life! Thank you.
The last time I heard this great hymn was at a prayer meeting in a village in Clackmannanshire, the smallest county in Scotland. This duet and accompaniment took me back to that summer's night in the early 1980s, and the Christian girl from Tasmania I was with.
Exquisite... this is the real joy we find when we trust our lives to the one who laid down His life for ours ... even through tears nothing can take this joy away. Thank you Lord for the gift of Jesus and the gift of music that allows our hearts to worship you ❤
It's been too long since I sang this with my church, and the lyrics were a source of deep refreshment for my weary soul today! Praise God for talent like this and thank you for sharing 🙏🙌
May God be praised. Thank you all for being the instruments of the grace of God in communicating so beautifully this song of the love of God that will not let His elect go.
The background to this hymn is awesome. George Matheson was training for the ministry he was engaged to be married but was losing his eyesight. His fiance could not face a future with a blind husband so broke off the engagement. In order to complete his studies his sister devoted herself to helping him in the process
She taught herself Hebrew and Greek in order to assist him. When she eventually married he was finally left alone and that was when he penned this hymn
Blessings from Taiwan 🇹🇼 😇 🥰 Thank you for this BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL song ❤🎵 Hope to have lyrics in the video as well so we can sing along 🥳 God bless you and your ministry 😇💖

I too did not grow up in a Christian church. These are all new hymns to me as a 30 year old! But how sweet they are indeed!!!!
Those of us who were brought up in the church sadly take these oldie songs for granted.
Beautiful words, ever true
The truth is older hymns usually are rooted to the Truth. Hence bereft of empty, meaningless words. It is the acknowledging of Truth that we who are drawn to these songs truly rejoice in.
@@mercyjohnson6436 Amen to that!

George Matheson.
This is how heaven is gonna be, all races and nations singing harmoniously to the King of kings. Oh glorious days ahead! Jesus is indeed Lord of all.
Praise God! :)
Yes. But there has only been one race to God: mankind.😊

I looked this song up because I am reading the story of Oswald Chambers, Abandoned to God. It says this was a favorite song of his. Beautiful!

Oh love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be
Oh light that followest all my way
I yield my flickering torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine's blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be
Oh joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be
Oh cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust's life's glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be
