In the end, I think they all know that this is how they will die. One base jump teacher once said, each climber has two jars, an experience jar and a luck jar. Every time you successfully climb and return home, you take from your luck jar and place it into your experience jar....eventually, the luck jar runs out. 3,000 ft. fall is a long way down. Rest in peace Ueli Steck.
@All I can say is Let me phrase it like this: People, who have a positive impact on the world will be able to do so twice as much, if they have a long life. Taking crazy risks that reduce this potential, can therefore be seen as immoral and not worth glorifying.
You will always be a tremendous inspiration -this was always how the Ueli Steck story was going to end -so I'm forever grateful to have appreciated every step of his career over the last decade.

Dream Wanderlust yes that is possible, when I heard it was near camp 1 I though it must have been an avalanche but then if he was on nuptse, one slip and it's a long way down
I always thought that he was taking too big risks. You can really see that in his Annapurna ascent. He did the impossible - an inhuman accomplishment. But still the risk was just too great. He admitted that himself later in an interview and said he should not push his luck so much any longer. I know he died during acclimatisation and not during some crazy attempt but still I am quite sure that he pushed hard that day and made a mistake. He always pushed hard and went super fast. That is always risky even with his insane skills. We will miss you Ueli. You died doning what you loved. Let this be a warning to everybody that in the end even the very best ones can lose. That in the end you just always roll the dice and hope for the best.
I agree. Statistically you can’t do that sort of climbing year after year and expect to live very long. It all ends with one mistake or event beyond your control and given that every step faces the same chance for error, given the number of steps, it’s virtually inevitable death will come from a fall in a short period of time.
His Annapurna climb has been questioned. Because he didn’t prove that he reached summit. He didn’t have pictures or proof from his altimeter or GPS. However he might have reached high up on south face at night.

Why he would attempt to climb Everest without oxygen is completely baffling to me! Human beings were not meant to go where there is little oxygen, which we need to make our brain work and our heart pump! We're not fish and we're not birds, yet we attempt to do what they do, completely out of our natural element! I was a thrill-seeker, but each time I was in a perilous situation, it was very well calculated and I felt it wouldn't kill me, but unexpected things CAN AND DO HAPPEN! I was lucky. As you age, longevity begins to look better and better to you! Then, your brain intercedes over your passions and you'd rather live than push the odds of dying closer and closer! RIP, Ueli, I hope you felt satisfied with your achievements in those few moments before you stopped breathing. You will be remembered but now you are a stat, one of about 300 who are known to have died on Mt. Everest. From 2 to 7 die each year. Not all are counted because some have fallen into crevasses or were covered with avalanches and were never found. While I can admire those who push their limits, I have never had the impetus to do what will more likely than not, kill me!

People ALWAYS say "he/she died doing what they love" as if that excuses the tragedy! Think how much more there was for them to love and enjoy in life that MAY have been far better than that one impulsive action that prevented them from probably enjoying FAR MORE for the next 40 or 50 years of life that they'll never know! Passions they could have had that they did not know existed for them, perhaps far bigger and better than climbing a mountain! Why some people CONTINUE to "test their endurance" after they've already achieved what is the maximum for most people, MAY indicate a mental illness, an obsessive behavior that often kills them.
