  • The capture of the French Regiment's Eagle secures Sharpe's promotion and restores the honour of the South Essex.
    From Season 1 Episode 2 "Sharpe's Eagle": It is July 1809. During the Talavera Campaign, Sir Arthur Wellesley's army has entered Spain to confront Marshal Victor. Richard Sharpe and his small group of thirty riflemen, separated from their regiment during the retreat from Corunna, are attached to the newly arrived South Essex Regiment.
    From Talavera, General Wellesley dispatches the South Essex, alongside Sharpe's riflemen and Major Michael Hogan's engineers, to blow up the bridge at Valdelacasa. Due to a combination of arrogance, poor training and incompetence, the two regiments are routed by the French, with hundreds of men killed and wounded, Lennox fatally wounded by the enemy, and the loss of the King's Colours.
    Sharpe's old friend, Lieutenant Colonel William Lawford, relieves Simmerson of command and orders the South Essex back into position, where their volleys destroy the column's cohesion. Sharpe leads the Light Company and his rifles into the fray and captures a French regiment's Eagle. Returning from the battlefield, Sharpe is ambushed by Gibbons, who attempts to murder Sharpe and take the Eagle for himself, but is killed by Harper.

    Fun fact, the first British army regiment to take a French imperial eagle was the 87th Irish fusiliers, for this act, they were renamed the royal Irish fusiliers. Having royal in your regiments title is a huge honour as it meant your regiments deeds were recognised and honour and glory had been gained by you and your fellows

    • @Countrybananas
      @Countrybananas 7 месяцев назад +34

      Being granted the title of Royal during a time of war is such a special honour it's only been awarded 2 or 3 times in British history. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment did this in WW1 and were the only ones to do so during WW1.

      The closest to really capturing it is Waterloo (1970) which if you enjoy sharpe or the Napoleonic wars I’d recommend. That had 15,000 extras, a record it still holds and massive scale. However that’s still only 1/8th the size of the real battle and it ended up losing money though from the huge budget for those extras. Great film though and crazy achievement.
