    Hi Jehu, thanks for these videos. I just scored a bundle of 64 laptop batteries for 120 $ here in France which I'll receive next week and start dismantling... got my iMax B6. Time to play, test, build, think, learn and basically make them baby steps towards grasping what the lectricity thing is all about ! Yeeha !
    Thanks again for the inspiration and education !
    Keep on trucking ! (from France)

    I charge 2 packs of 8 cells in parallel and run them in series by using a 2 position 4 pole switch.
    I use a RC charger and am running LiFePo4 cells which aren't fussy about balancing after they have been bottom balanced.
    This set-up is for an e-bike, so it's relatively simple.
    RC chargers are handy to have around be if you like messing around with batteries.

  • @Ziplock9000
    @Ziplock9000 4 года назад +19

    You buy a charger with built in balancing and completely bypass it when actually charging the batteries. You could get massive currents between batteries putting them in parallel like this if they are not balanced, potentially causing a fire.

      By my experience all cells tend to be at the same voltage after some charging. I tried disconnecting them and measuring the voltage for each cell and they are almost the same, with variations of 0,1V. This variations could be dangerous, and I recommend charging them in parallel to 4.1V and then balance-charging them to the max. The video is not a "healthy" procedure, but it's a trick to charge faster.

      @@lucioherediaparaja359 What's really interesting is that since my comment 6m ago, I set up a 4P4S solar panel charger battery array and after ~180 charging cycles each parallel array was only out by ~1-5mv from the others, which blew my mind. I was expecting much larger deltas in just a week and having to balance it manually dozens of times during those 6 month. The cells are all old salvaged ones too.

      @@lucioherediaparaja359 I'm not using a BMS and that's why I'm so confused. The plan was to manually balance them once a week with my CellMeter 8 and/or iSDT BatteryGo BG-8S. I just don't understand how they managed to stay in balance for 6 months to such an incredibly close tolerance with no balancing at all (automatic or manual).

    First off thank you for all that you do. Helping Puerto Rico out shows your true motivation which is helping people out with no hidden agenda. I'm motivated by your path and appreciate your mojo.
    I've been following for a while and starting to get pretty deep into sorting my 18650s out after my first order of 42 old laptop batteries. Now, I got my hands on 4 IMax B6 chargers and I'm confused on the settings. So I got the safety timer off and setting changed to LiIo at 3.7V 1.2A(charging 3 18650 at a time in parallel). Why can't we set it to 4.2V like the 18650s are rated for? Will the charger just stop automatically after it reaches 4.2Vs? Just figured the charge controller would let you choose the full voltage charge rate of 4.2V instead of just giving you the option of LiIo and the amps its pushing out.
    Again thanks for the motivation and what you do! #nerdout

    Hi Jehu! Thanks for your videos, I am learning a lot and getting quite excited about making my own powerwall. Question: I understand the 5 amps for the 16 cells, but when you put only one cell, wouldn't that overheat the cell? I mean, in the video the cell was already charged, so very little current flowed through it, but let's say it was discharged, wouldn't that damage or at least overheat the cell? Thanks a lot!

  • @cruiser97eric1
    @cruiser97eric1 5 лет назад +5

    Be aware that setup is not as safe as Jehu makes it sound. The nice sharing of current will only happen if all the cells are in reasonably good shape. If one of the cells connected in parallel develops a short circuit, the charger as well as all the other cells will try to dump all their energy into it and there will be fireworks. It would be better to have a fuse between each cell slot and a common bus wire.

    Don't use the LiPo setting for Li-Io batteries.
    There are actual settings for Li-Io batteries in the Imax charger.
    In the menu go in to:
    User Set - Program.
    Hit Start/Enter button.
    The screen then shows only one of these battery types (LiPo, Lilo, or LiFe) and V.Type.
    Hit Enter button.
    The voltage setting will start flashing.
    You can now change the voltage settings using left and right (Dec. Inc.) buttons.
    You'll see 3 different voltage/battery type options as you press left or right () buttons.
    3.3V - LiFe
    3.6V - Lilo
    3.7V - LiPo
    Select your battery type and press Enter button to confirm Voltage/Battery type.
    Now press Batt.Type/Stop button to exit Program menu.
    You'll be back at the User Set - Program-> screen.
    Press Left () arrow 6 times and you'll scroll through 'Program Select' Screens:
    LOAD DATA, SAVE DATA, Pb BATT, NiCd BATT, NiMH BATT, and finally one (LiFe, LiPo or Lilo) battery option depending on what you entered on the User Set - Program-> Screen.
    Press Start/Enter to select (Lilo, LiPo, or LiFe - only the battery type you selected on the User Set - Program-> screen will be shown)
    Next you'll see:
    (Lilo, LiPo, or LiFe) CHARGE depending on what you chose at User Set - Program-> Screen.
    Press Start/Enter button and charge amps will flash, adjust up or down as needed with () buttons.
    Press Start/Enter again to confirm your amp setting and the voltage selection starts flashing.
    Use () buttons to select voltage/cell configuration for your needs, the total pack voltge and 1S, 2S, 3S etc will change together.
    You can also press left (

    Here's something interesting about this type of charger. The original one won't charge more than 1S without the balancing leads, but the clones/copies will. That is, the clone will allow you to charge up to 6S pack (whether it has a BMS or not). The original one can also charge Lifepo4 (although both allow you to adjust the voltage parameters). The original one costs twice as much. Some clones have very cheap capacitors so they burn out quite quickly.

      @Tonyplat98 5 лет назад

      I can do that for you but i don't know when i'll get around to it. I know for a fact that the fake charger charges a lot slower and it's voltage can be wrong... for example I have a 3S battery which full charged should be 12.6V and when I charged it with the fake one and measured with my fluke 87-V multimeter it was at 13.1 Volts. That is dangerous and is killing my cells and that's what made me get the genuine charger. After I discharged that battery and charged it with the genuine and measured with the multimeter it was at 12.599 which is exactly 12.6V. From that moment on i've never bought another fake charger. Jehu recommends the fake ones in the next video but I wish he did not. He has a lot of followers and they listen to him but fake chargers no bueno....

    You can also set those chargers to LiIon, which makes essentially no difference. Except that it changes the nominal voltage to 3.6 V per cell, which I would assume effects the capacity readings slightly (about 3 % more) since I believe the measured capacity is adjusted to 3.6 V. Meaning if it pulls 1 amp for an hour at 4 volts, it would actually read 1111 mAh since, at the nominal voltage of 3.6 V it would need 1.1 amps for an hour to get the same amount of energy. I don't know if this is the case, it's just an assumption, since that's what I would consider the most logical. I guess it would be easy to test with a lab power supply set to different voltages...
    Anyway, if anyone knows exactly how these chargers calculate mAh readings, feel free to reply to this comment. ;-)

    I had no idea all the chemistry involved when i started using these batteries. If it wasn't for your videos, I would be lost!! But I have a few quick questions. I like to build those mini boom boxes, and a few of them are now using 5s BMS boards. I figured, since it is almost impossible to get a 21 volt DC charger here in the states, I would purchase a few of the Imax b6-s. Only problem, the person I give the box to would have to charge and than play. I am sure I am wrong, I am just learning...LOL. My questions-- Say I want to use the Imax to charge my 5S. Are you saying, when I go to charge all 5 batteries.(plugged in like you mentioned here). I would set the Imax at 5amps, and 3.7 volts or 1s."4.2 volts charging". The Imax will charge them all at 4.2 volt 5 amps, it see the pack as one big Battery? If this is the case, couldn't I get away with a purchase of a 12.6V dc charger, or even a 4.2 dc charger and it will still charge my pack fully. I have always been told-- Example, if you have 5s-You make sure to purchase a 21 volt charger, 4S-16.8Volts, 3S-12.6V, 2S-8.4V and 1S-4.2V(all 2 amps or higher). I can find affordable and abundant 4.2-12.6Volt charges all day long. Would save me some money. Or does the Imax only work this way if you do not have a BMS board?("I didn't see your BMS video till after I had already started using them..LOL") You have NO Clue, how much I have learned from your Videos!!!! Very Detailed!

Answer: ("Yes")Than I was wondering if you could also use the Imax b6 to power the system, so I wouldn't also need to purchase a 21 volt charger. Answer ("No"). The Imax b6 does not provide the type of Voltage needed, to power the system. So I would have to purchase a separate 21 volt plug(not charger). Something like a Laptop Battery supply.
      I ended up, rewriting my schematics to include a SDPT switch, and 2 separate plug-ins. Now I can run on Battery power, or switched and use a Proper Power supply. Later on in the power line, I have a master power switch with Voltmeter. (parallel charging will not work in my situation)-BMS charging the batteries, and than switched to DC power when needed.
      The other questions-Say I have a 5S Battery Pack. Is It possible to charge that pack with a 3S charger. Would it still charge?, just slower than a 5S charger?. (Only in Parallel) My batteries would be in Series and would not work.
      I want to Thank you for all of your Video's. I have Major OCD, and I wanted to make sure I got the battery system right the first time. If I had to guess, I have 2 weeks, 24/7 research on Li-Ion Batteries. I have learned the most from your Videos. I had to grasp the differences in parallel charging and series)Newbie here 200%, but learning!
      Thank you!

    Thanks. If I have a motor that draws 25 amps and i have a battery pack that is 6s40p - that is 6 cells in series with 40 batteries in parallel for each cell. That is a total of 240 batteries. How many amps is each battery discharging? I would like your answer to be in a formula. Thanks and you have a great channel.

    22AWG (american wire gauge) has I believe...a maximum 5Amp of current flow through the copper (I am not an engineer here). The lower the AWG number the larger the copper wire... the higher current potential... this tends to drop however depending on how long your cable is since it needs to transmit that current over farther distances (hence direct current voltage tends to drop over long transmissions and I believe thats why we use alternating current for power grids instead) but yeah for 5Amps you dont want a smaller gauge wire than 22AWG

    Actually, you can do balance charging which will adjust charging to individual cell, thus max out the capacity.
    What you did will (1 series 16 battery cells) compromise its capacity since each cell will contain different initial mAh, except you 're already sort its capacity.

    • @milhooz
      @milhooz 4 года назад

      If the 4 batteries are in series then it is a 4S. You can also have 2 // groups of 2 batteries in series and then it is a 2S. Nominal battery voltage for a LiPo battery is 3.7V, so if you have 4 in series, it is 4 x 3.7 so 14.8V. But 18650 are Li-ion and not LiPo so nominal voltage is 3.6V. Maximum charge is 4.2V per battery, so again total will be 16.8V. In Series, you multiply the Voltage and in Parallel, the Amperage. To extend the life of the batteries, they should be charged at 1C maximum and better at 0.5C so for a 2500mAh battery, you should charge at 2500 x 0.5 = 1.25A.

    i was wondering about the possibility of wiring a large battery pack with a series of switches that allows it to turn from an 8S into a single battery back that is composed of possibly 100 18650's in parallel so that it can balance itself and not have to charge in increments of 6S (max capacity for series charging of a B6), however, i'm wondering if my idea is flawed because now each cell will be being charged at such low maH, it may take forever. what do you think? much appreciated

    I noticed on Aliexpress these battery holders have gotten cheap ..like 0.80 each for the 4 holder .So I'm wondering if it would be possible to build larger batteries by combining them..no soldering and it would make it easier to troubleshoot and replace individual cells..

    •  6 лет назад +1

      i would not recomend using these housings for larger loads if you would like to get max current out of the pack these holders would cause owerheating and possible fire the connections would have to be made thick or wide as the ones on the pack when you solder it.

    • @justin456
      @justin456 4 года назад

      A cell that is 2v in this chemistry is a fully dead non servicable battery, if you parallel this with cells that are 40-50% at 3.8 it will try to balance and likely cause a fire without even using the charger at all.
