_Band of Brothers_ was based on Steven Ambrose's book about E Company, so it was a story about a group of men going through the war together. Hanks & Spielberg didn't have an equivalent for _The Pacific,_ so they used several memoirs, and wove them together. I'm not sure if Leckie, Sledge, Basilone, etc. were ever all in the same place at the same time, or even _knew_ each other.

@@Residentanimalz The Japanese were just a different breed back then. Australia had the support of the Royal Navy but given that Britain was fighting in all Fronts with its navy to protect itself and its colonies, I doubt they could’ve held off The Imperial Japanese Navy without US support.
Most if not all of the Japanese Army were also battle hardened from their war in China, so a ground invasion of Australia would’ve been costly but they would’ve taken most the of populated centers.

@5:53 Chesty is known as "the marines, Marine" he served liquor to the men on the frontline at frozen chosen during the Korean war when they were completely surrounded and cut off from Chinese troops. one phrase he called the men under his command "old man" when addressing them at times. even found a private once asleep while on guard duty and had every right as a officer to throw him in the brig or worse and he didn't, showing compassion in a position where sternness and no mercy for mistakes is expected. Truly and outstanding leader and earned the status of a legend in the USMC that anyone would follow into hell and back. There is a book that on the "jocko podcast" here on RUclips they covered a auto biography of Chesty Puller and his experiences and the things he did in the marines, that podcast left me speechless and in aw of chesty. Great reaction here and on Patreon. Did you notice that when John Basilone was wearing the Medal of Honor the general who bestowed it on him saluted him first? It’s a tradition that all salute the MOH recipient first, even those who outrank him.
Hoosier with the blanket, went to sleep because he had malaria. Out of its 16,000 men, 8,500 of the First Marine Division had malaria, dysentery and hepatitis after leaving Guadalcanal. They needed rest and rebuilding. That 100 mile March was miserable because they had new boots which killed their feet.

That was Chesty Puller who awarded John Basilone with the Medal of Honor. He was every Marine's Marine, all his men and every Marine since then looks up to Chesty as a Legend, not only because of his leadership and exploits, but because he was both an enlisted and commissioned officer, what Marines call a Mustang. He cared more about his Marines and them getting the job done more than how they looked. Chesty is the most decorated Marine ever, served in 4 wars. He once said "Take me to the brig, I want to see the real Marines." Of course he was never gonna chew out John Basilone.

The Medal of Honor is so rare that it would be common to sort of protect living recipients from being killed in further combat, but in this case there was also truly a need to put a face to the war to raise money. It is so difficult to earn this medal that roughly 60% of all Medals of Honor are awarded posthumously. In other words, more of then than not, you literally die in the process of qualifying for it. How rare is it? Consider that the United States has been in almost perpetual war since 1941 (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc), and yet there are only 70 people alive today who have earned the medal.

There was the Battle of Brisbane were civilians and Australian soldiers attacked US military personal over multiple disputes (US soldiers were given preferential treatment, PDA was offensive at the time, differences in pay, and, ironically, views on race). Our soldiers didn't like how the US military treated African American soldiers at the time. The purpose of selling war bonds wasn't actually to pay for the war. Then as now, the government creates the money it spends as it spends it, through the Federal Reserve. It's just a matter of putting numbers into the accounts. But because much of the economy was turned over to war production, while employment and wages were at an all time high, there was a need to soak up people's excess income while goods for the home front were scarce so as to hold down inflation. So selling government bonds encouraged people to save that money rather than trying to spend it and driving up prices in such a way that war production and people's lives would have been affected. The alternative would have been to raise income tax on low and average incomes, which would have been more unpopular and might have stimulated strikes and other work stoppages. The war spending was creating a lopsided and delayed boom which had to be managed to keep the war effort running smoothly.

The conflict between the Australian and US troops in this episode is actually underplayed, tbh - Australian soldiers HATED the Americans. US troops were always much more well-paid and better supplied than Australians (not to mention, much more exotic and worldly) so Australian women would practically throw themselves at the Americans. Naturally, this didn't go down too well with Australian men.
Fun fact: the tension between American and Australian soldiers got so bad at one point that a full-blown riot broke out in Queen Street Mall one night, resulting in 1 man dead and hundreds of soldiers wounded. Allegedly, the brawling was so bad that the entire 500m stretch of the promenade was filled, standing-room only, with soldiers assaulting each other. It became known as "The Battle of Brisbane" and for obvious reasons, it's not something that either government is very fond of remembering.

I'm Australian...and that episode was laughable :) I mean, a conservative Greek family (at that time especially) and their daughter brings home a US solider she's only just met and sleeps with him with the parents in the next room, hahahahaaa.......yeah, and Eisenhower was a gay Egyptian belly dancer

But was a very important storyline to summarise the experiences and issues of the people there at the time. Shows the highs and lows in one go even if it is made up.

I’m sure it will be a realistic viewpoint of the effects of war

Seeing the bar fight reminds me of what my father (I'm a Brit by the way) had told me was said about the American soldiers when they were in the UK, which was, "Over paid, over sexed and over here!" This tends to sum up how some Australians felt as well.

Read up on Chesty Puller (William Sandler’s character) when you get the chance. He’s an absolute legend in the Marine Corps.
