    Thats such a powerful scene of the young man walking away with the surf board at the end... Hopefully that was the beginning of a new generation of surfers in the area, in a country that is frought with troubles.

    • @Ali-7676
      @Ali-7676 3 года назад

      We have troubles, some of our own making, some created through our support of non-local powers that want influence in the region, but we persevere.
      That being said.....the man at 4:30-4:44 is explaining that he used to surf using planks taken off from boats that were no longer seaworthy.
      Surfing developed organically in Pakistan like it did in Hawaii, but never gained traction.
      Look up "surfing in pakistan" by a youtuber named Malang. The upload is from 2019. She describes the surfing scene at one particular location near Karachi, but mentions about 4 others along the coast and explains that villagers at the coast had been surfing planks from boats for generations, but never had the chance to surf proper boards until 2014, when a local doctor donated 3 from abroad. 26 people used to share 3 boards until other donations brought the level up to about 30 boards.
      I found it as my 13yo daughter, who is a surfer and a Pakistani, asked me today, 5 days before our trip to El Salvador to surf, if there was surfing in Pakistan. Now that she knows that Skiing, Surfing, Ice Skating, Skateboarding, all exist in Pakistan, she isnt so resistant to visiting for an entire summer.
      Anyway, Its a good video, if you message Malang directly, maybe she can post one with a translation.

      Our main goal is not to disorganize the local pricing with enormous unbargained offers. We dont want fishermen to stop fishing and wait for the next tourist to make him pay a stupid amount of money. Money is relative

    • @yepanty
      @yepanty 4 года назад +1

      Now you could say so but back in 2001 (before Sept11), Pakistan was becoming more tourist friendly in a way and could have become some kind of surf destination for middle east surfers. You never know who will come next and when. Please believe me, this is more a question of principle than money.

      @@yepanty @Antony YEP Colas sounds like bs to me. What I saw was a man re-enforcing his perceived position of superiority over the local by denying him a fair price to use his boat. Considering how dangerous it was, to the point where you had a close call and had to turn back, and that they had warned you prior to taking you out in their boat how dangerous it was. All you've done is use your wealth and power to exploit them. Giving a board away doesn't change that. Don't want to disorganise the local pricing? So fisherman are suddenly going to stop fishing because one random white man has paid a rare price to hire a boat. Do me a favour. Your arrogance is astounding. Why is that a problem for you if it did change the pricing anyway? I suggest you have a look at the surfing hotspots in the UK and see how much it costs to hire out equipment. Look it all up, all of it, and then ask yourself why it's ok for people in places like Newquay to charge what they do, and why the man in Pakistan cannot charge what he intended to charge you. No bargaining over prices in Newquay btw... Tell me, what's the difference between the people hiring out their equipment in Newquay and the people hiring out their equipment in Pakistan? I think we both know the answer to that...

    it's hard to watch this and not think - why not bring along someone from pakistan (perhaps) who even lives abroad and could help navigate the cultural differences/language, an anthropologist from Pakistan living abroad for example? a Pakistani surfer living outside his/her country? and I just feel uncomfortable seeing westerners bargain down prices for things like a boat when there is no way you'd spend only $25 for a boat in the US or Europe (maintaining hierarchies across the globe) and convince a team of guards to accompany them in situations that would be risky for them, too. I hope they would do things differently today. Besides that, this must have been an incredible experience - what a total privilege to be able to see this part of the world!

    • @yepanty
      @yepanty 3 года назад

      Back in the days (2001), gathering that team and making it to Paksitan was laready quite a task. We would have loved to share our trip with various other people. Bargaining the boat was just a way not to disorganize the local market. When surfers land in a village and pay twice for surf transfers, then locals stop fishing and take surfers instead. trying to reduce our local impact. Not always feasible...
