  • Mount Olivet Cemetery is located in Hugo, Oklahoma. Many people know this town as a wintering ground for circus'. Most of the circus' have disappeared but you can see a reflection of the town's history in the cemetery where there are many graves of circus performers and trainers. In addition to those there are some final resting places of several famous rodeo cowboys who were all legends in their own time. Come walk with me as we explore their life stories.

I got to meet Lane back in the late 80's. It was after The Lawton Rangers Rodeo. My friends and I were at the Honky Tonk bar. It was after a rodeo and the cowboys were coming in for dancing, shooting pool and beer. He shook my hand and said howdy. I was really shocked when they reported he had died in a rodeo accident. Being from a family of Cowboys I know that that is part of the life. At least they wear protective gear these days. Wish they did back then maybe Lane would still be with us. RIP LANE FROST

I ran across a photo with them both standing in it. So Ben would have known Todd. Sometimes it's interesting how I keep running into the same people and I bet very few people know about Todd that enter that museum. I told the lady who was working in there and she had no idea. Lanes' traveling buddies founded the PBR. No doubt if he had lived he would be one of the owners. He went back and broke the record for world championships.

I'm not sure how good of friends that Ty and Lane ever were. Ty was just coming into the PRCA in 1988. That is the year that Lane had a lot of distractions. Especially with Red Rock. Lane's closest friends were Cody Lambert and Tuff Hedeman. Ty did have a good entrance as into the PRCA. He got Rookie of the year I believe and he really wasn't even fully committed to it yet. He never won the bull riding championship two times in a row but he did win twice. He did win All around champion from 89-94 and one other time I think in 1998. So he had quite a streak of the all around. Murray wasa heck of a cowboy though. He held the record for all around titles until Brazile came along and he is at 14. He has 25 total. One of two people who is ahead of Jim shoulders at 16. I'm not sure on an actual list to see who is there between Jim and Ty.. to me though no one can really match what Tuff did for Lane in 1989. Riding 8 seconds for himself and another 8 for Lane in the finals. Winning the championship in Lane's honor. As far as Ty being upset I haven't heard about that before. Ty was really just getting started. I'm not sure who if anyone will ever catch Brazile. He is a breed all of his own.

Great video Rhetty I had always hoped that you would do a video on Lane Frost someday. As well as Freckles. Not sure if you already know this or not but Garth Brooks 1990 song The Dance is dedicated to Lane Frost as well as Keith Whitley, Martin Luther King J.R., President John F. Kennedy, John Wayne and the crew members of the space shuttle Challenger. I hope to go to Lane Frost and Freckles graves soon I'm not that far away from the cemetery. You should try visiting the old Wheelock Academy sometime the church there was built in 1844 and still stands. There's a cemetery by the church where the Reverend Alfred Wright who funded the school and church is buried.

Bill Grant was born Billy Joe Grant on May 9, 1929, a Choctaw tribal member, and grew up on a ranch near Hugo, Oklahoma. Inspired by the music of Bill Monroe, he took up mandolin. In 1959, Bell began singing with Bobby's friend Bill Grant. Bell accompanied herself on guitar, and Bill Grant played mandolin, and Bell sang tenor to Grant's lead.

Although that one fellow died so young, he died doing what he loved. As always your graveyard tours are so interssting and education. Those two remote burials are surprising to be so far back. I owned and raised Appaloosas in my younger days and a Choctaw lady horse trainer, named Sandy Smith, trained by last Appy mare, Rhapsody in Pink a/k/a Joleen.

I weren't more than a mere ranch hand for a bit best time of my life and had great interest in Rodeo and gave it a try , try a few small bulls and decided nah... pick up man maybe ha ha or calf roping back then , just went on in life after lost of loved one at a young age. Very good Video , Great strength , Good Champion gave more than the try, He Put everything into it including his life and purifying heart, no pun there intended. Keep up the memories , we lose real hero's too soon.

Beautiful tribute to All the cowboys resting in Peace in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Very odd that the two older markers are so far away from the rest. Because of the year, would it be possible that these poor souls would have been African Americans. I know that there were very strong prejudices then. Possible??

What an interesting cemetery. Radeon riding wasn't a easy way of making a living. So many of them died young. What is the meaning of leaving coins I don't think it's a custom here in Australia. Cheers Lynne Australia 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You're right. You have to be good to make it into the pros of rodeo and even better to make a living at it. The coins have different meanings to different people and cultures but for the most part in this case they are just a sign of remembering and visiting. Thank you for watching Lynne!

      Lynne, hi from Missouri USA.
I've heard that some people will leave a penny if they had heard of the person. A nickel if the they seen the person. A dime if they had met the person and a quarter if they had met the person more than once.
That's how I've heard it goes.

I made a mistake in my previous post. The Colbert family I referred to are Chickasaw. The Choctaws leased some of the Nation to Chickasaws and had to share some land when the Chickasaws came. Issac Colbert was a brother-in-law to Robert Jones of the Jones Plantation. Rose Hill Plantation was the largest plantation in Oklahoma consisting of four cotton plantations and the largest slave ownership. Before the Civil War Jones was worth over a million dollars. The plantation house is gone but the cemetery is still there just south of the highway on county road 4260.
