Ian is right near his peak strength right now. He's expanded his openings lately and plays both the English opening and the Queen's Pawn openings. He used to play 1. e4 almost all of the time. He's unusually strong with the Scotch opening and has always been effective against the Sicilian defense. With the black pieces against 1. e4, he used to play the Sicilian defense almost all of the time but now is playing the French defense fairly often, but with mixed results.
