Thanks John, for your great content. Every time I watch you, I'm reminded of the cool dudes who were around the hifi scene in the 80's and early 90's. My dad was a designer and consultant on several of the Rotel products from '81-'96 and I had the pleasure of meeting so many really nice guys during my formative years. Videos about Rotel products obviously have a special place in my heart, and remind me fondly of times spent sat on my Dad's workbench, or listening to hour upon hour of great music as he tested his latest designs.
Good to see Rotel getting their due again. Now that I'm bi wiring, my next integrated may very well be a Rotel. One of my first legit systems was all Rotel with preamp, amp and CD player, and that was about 25 years ago.
My first quality amp purchase was a Rotel RA-12 which has a DAC and MM phono stage. Six years later and it’s in my secondary living room system at the moment. Perhaps that DAC has become ‘obselete’ but it still sounds good and I plan to keep this “super” integrated as long as I can - away from a landfill. Nice to see Rotel naturally progress and update their offerings. They also have a nice unifying design language that looks timeless IMO.
I bought my first Rotel amp about 2 years ago. A power amp, for my Furutech Stratos Preamp. Really love the Rotel. High quality. Also the cool thing about Roon tested is the little logo when you view your hifi signal view in Roon. It becomes "identified". Its a cool little feature. Would love love to see the Stratos being identified...
Always liked Rotel, first ever amp was an RA820AX which I paired with JPW Sonatas and a Philips bitstream player. When the amp blew magic smoke after a year of abuse in student halls Rotel had it fixed and back to me in no time; and it lasted until I gifted it on a decade later.
My first amp was a Rotel RA820 BX2, bought new sometime in the early to mid eighties. It's traveled across the Atlantic and although now running at 110v not 240v without any adaption it's still being used by my son. Good products, super reliable.
Ha! Same - an RA820 from mid-eighties. It was a revelation to me at the time. I think I had a Dual CS505 II turntable with it and some Wharfedale speakers.
Same here, (edit: RA840BX) although bought second hand in the 90s. :) Still using it until I can decide how smart a new amp needs to be... This all looks pretty good.
Sold my Naim kit (Nac102/Nap160/HiCap ... Too many boxes!) about a decade ago with the plan to buy a Densen integrated. Got a cheap Rotel RA-931 MkII from eBay to tide me over, re-capped it and never bothered buying the Densen!. The Rotel powers my Royd speakers amazingly well and with a Raspberry Pi/DAC on the front end, I don't want for anything else!
I wish all reviews would do what you just did... specifying if a unit is Roon Ready or Roon Tested. Most say “works with Roon” which doesn’t mean much. Thanks for the clarity in your reviews John.
Excellent video. I still have Rotel components in my basement, and their Newest Flagship hometheater prepro. I even had their RSP 1098 and they have always offered upgraded modular boards for both models.👍
I’ve always questioned the value of built in DACs and phono stages. DACs especially are improving at a rate higher than integrated amps. Of course, if one foresees setting with the built in DAC, that’s fine. But most audio enthusiasts are looking to see what comes up next.

Only just finding this now. I like your videos and I like Rotel gear so my interest in this video is natural. I have some old (I'm talking 1997 here) Rotel gear. A Rotel RA-971 amplifier, fed by a Rotel RDD-980 CD transport and an RDP-980 DAC. The system just makes a beautiful sound. A little while ago I tried replacing the DAC with something more modern, capable of resolving more than a 48khz sample rate. The Rotel was so much more musical, the new DAC lasted 24 hours. It has occurred to me that my comment refers to the very antithesis of 'FutureFi' but hey-ho.

The Rotel is the 1572/1582 Pre and amp, or the Para P6 and A21+. So far, I'm still stuck on the Rotel and B&W simply on price, knowing that for an extra $3000 Cdn, the sound is a bit different on the Para....really wondering on direction, though the final 'test drive' will help the decision. Rotel is warm, Parasound is 'different'...better???
I’ve used Rotel off and on over the years. I really like their power supplies. The last integrated I had from them also had an HD tuner (its been a while!). It did have an unfortunate bug. If you touched it with a static charge (very common in dry New England winters), the whole unit would seize up. Tech support walked me through the step of taking the case off and shorting the appropriate place to get it up and working again, but I was kind of annoying. Eventually, I moved over to Rega, and now to rogue. I’m not a fan of integrated that build in their DACS, since that tech is moving so quickly.

I understand this entirely (particularly with Hegel, who only offer two analogue inputs on most of their amplifiers) but there is also an appeal to having one remote (and not using another to switch between digital inputs on your DAC). With the exception of stupid proprietary codecs like MQA, it's hard to see DACs appreciably improving in the future (given most music is 24/48 at most).

Rotel was one of the 1st "higher end" brands I was exposed to...I never liked how they sounded. Punchy? Sure. Dynamic? Absolutely. But they always sounded harsh and unforgiving to me. It got worse when they went all in on Class D amps. (file under "unsubstantiated ramblings of grumpy geezers")
'Future-fi' is a bit of a misnomer regarding lifestyle products that will end up as landfill when just one part of the technology fails. Doesn't fit in with your narrative, but an important consideration when influencing others' spending.
@@DarkoAudio Aiming for wider appeal and in this case all-in-one simplification. Not belittling it from a hifi perspective. Superficially appealing, but still around (and serviceable and with supported technology) in say 10, 20 years' time?

I'm a bit worried that Jana is listening to muzak.....
I'm guessing John is quite tall......
You are an English guy. Your videos are in the English language. You presumably have a lot of viewers in the UK, so why when mentioning the prices of equipment don't you ever mention the UK price in GBP?
Meanwhile cambridge have their new super-integrateds
Love Canada M.T.L Québec wow
FUCK!! I just got the Rotel RA 1572 two weeks ago.
Rotel was one of the 1st "higher end" brands I was exposed to...I never liked how they sounded. Punchy? Sure. Dynamic? Absolutely. But they always sounded harsh and unforgiving to me. It got worse when they went all in on Class D amps. (file under "unsubstantiated ramblings of grumpy geezers")
Love John's eyeglasses. Remind me of Jacqu Marie Mage. Any chance he can share the brand/model?
'Future-fi' is a bit of a misnomer regarding lifestyle products that will end up as landfill when just one part of the technology fails. Doesn't fit in with your narrative, but an important consideration when influencing others' spending.
What do you mean by 'lifestyle' products? And by that logic, ANY hifi piece could end up in a landfill if one of its internal components fails.
@@DarkoAudio Aiming for wider appeal and in this case all-in-one simplification. Not belittling it from a hifi perspective. Superficially appealing, but still around (and serviceable and with supported technology) in say 10, 20 years' time?
I think you're referring to possible technological obsolescence? Which feature of this super integrated do you think will go the way of the dodo?
It's becoming big businees now with Cambridge releasing two integrated streamers with phono stages also.
yay.......more over-priced thin sounding amps from good old Rotel.........those from the late 1990s sounded better......
I always wonder how people who can afford such things even have time to listen to music at home. Like I live and work in Germany but even though I have to fight for some time to listen to music (mostly it's after 00:00 so I can only listen to headphones anyway) because I have to work so much I still only can afford a used 200€ amp.
That Jana is one cutie pie!
Assembled in China, so I'm buying American made.
mk2 DSD non compatibile!
ya that girl is a cutie
Cool stuff
