Absolute genius, I'm so glad Paul Simon was around in my lifetime. I'm 62, from Scotland, and have seen him twice with Art Garfunkel and 5 times solo, (including a double act with sting) 🏴🇺🇲
Americana at its best. Prolific songwriter , songs relevant to the times. Politics , religion and human tragedy and joy. S n G , the best duo in my lifetime. 71 years old and still listening . I couldn’t get enough…..
Love the line "And I don't know a soul whose not been battered, I don't have a friend who feels at ease, I don't know a dream that's not been shattered or drivin to it's knees" excellent song writing.
It's actually not amazing songwriting (you can't drive a dream to its knees, for example - the metaphors don't really work) but it's still a powerful song.
Ok you guys. Try playing that version of American Tune on the guitar as effortlessly as Paul does here. Try singing it so well with understated and powerful emotions. And before that try writing a song so complex and beautiful as this one. Love that guy.
Here is this set list American Tune 0:00-3:54 (Paul Simon) Bridge over trouble Water 3:54-9:54 (Simon & Garfunkel) Loves Me Like A Rock 9:55-12:34 (Paul Simon)
Someone from either grade school or hS in nyc invited me to his home and played the album Bookends or Parsley Sage … it’s extraordinarily poignant today if not Moreso❤.
Bridge over troubled water should have been arranged in such a gospel fashion from the get-go as opposed to the more “mainstream-pop” version we’re all familiar with. It probably wouldn’t have been commercial and appealing enough to the music industry back in the day when it came out!
That’s the beautiful thing about a song that’s truly great. It can have a hundred different interpretations and each one is the best for someone because of how good the songwriting structure itself is
I like very much Paul Simon whom I sing but I love even more J S Bach. The melody of American Tune is exactly, note for note the subject of choir of the passion according to Saint Mathieu " O Haupt voll Blut und wunden ". He added a tune but the main part comes from Bach.
@@cpollero53 yeah, on the original studio recording Art did, but I’m saying Paul owned this song in terms of writing it and even through his own renditions of it.
@@kateileen -- which I feel says a lot about the song and in particular Garfunkel singing, as it was the epitome of his style, and he sings it beautifully but Simon just isn't the same type of vocalist as Garfunkel (even tho their voice pair PERFECTLY with each other, of which we were blessed with 5 studio albums from this one of a kind duo) and therefore, he's in a sense "covering" that Simon & Garfunkel tune and here's his concept for that.
Paul Simon himself says he wrote Bridge over Troubled Water for Art’s voice and as for ugly remarks about Art being nothing more than a maths teacher without Paul. Have you seen him act in Bad Timing with Theresa Russell directed by Nic Roeg ? It’s a complicated brilliant performance. Not taking anything, a single thing, away from Paul Simon one of the most talented songwriters, poets, performers of all time. It just seems terribly sad to disrespect the contribution the angelic voice of Art Garfunkel brought to his early work. They may have had their disagreements but it is their business surely? I went to their concert in Hyde Park about 10 years ago and they were clearly having a fine old time harmonising together again.
He sings American Tune way better than Garfunkel. It's his own song, so it makes sense. You can hear the emotion in this. Garfunkel just sings it like an angelic robot. American Tune has more layers of sophistication when Paul sings it. That hair looks awful, though. I don't get all the worshipping for these two guys. They're humans with the good and bad, like the rest of us.
Such a great songwriter and musician, a real troubadour. I don't mean to sound ridiculous and it's probably just my amateur, if that, ear, but to me his guitar sounds very out of tune, actually really bad. Testing myself... does anyone else hear that?
His outfit is a bit old style for music videos. But really nice singing and playing. Hopefully someone see this and sign him. Just like Justin Bieber. Who was also discovered on RUclips.
To be frank, I only like a few from Simon Garfunkel, which are classic, and if you even have one that becomes classic, you're great already. But most of their music is pretty ordinary, like this one here. The only band that produced great music consistently is the Beatles.

Paul is a rare blend of musician and poet. Add a silky smooth voice and we have a classical American musical icon.

Well said. I will listen to Paul until I die. The best singer-songwriter in human history. Music doesn't get any better than his.
That was amazing. Paul is a true Gospel singer. Paul writes, sings, and plays that guitar like nothing else on earth.
A true artist in every dynamic and elevating sense of the word.
Anazing!!!!!! I am so glad that i was alive when Simon & emerged on the scene…… magic.
He's great ! Great songwriter and arranger - a real American treasure . New York's own ❤
Paul Simon is in a class of his own. Just love his music. ❤️
Unbelievable how talented a songwriter and performer Paul Simon is, amazing band playing with him in this video too.
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉a living legend and a kind, shy and cute little man, so talented, just awesome. Thank you, Paul for sharing your Music with us all ❤❤❤❤

A real poet. One of the best writers in all of music, along side with Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
He rhymes battered with shattered? How original!

Amazing musical talent and beautiful poetry. Simon is a legend.
Masterful guitarist 😎
This man has the voice of an angel, It blows my mind that anyone is capable of hitting a note so truly and purely
Never gave up the quest, always found fresh fields. He might well turn out to be the one that truly lasts from his generation.
What a voice!
Paul Simon...GENIUS
i love this man so much
One of my favorite songs of his of that era. He borrowed the melody from a Bach hymn and adapted it beautifully.
Which Bach hymn?
The Statue of Liberty is still sailing away... it's well over the horizon now... somehow Paul felt it beginning
Fantastic! :D Love what he did with Bridge.
Paul Simon.... Melhor voz.... Com Art Garfunkel melhor ainda. Amo essa música, América Tune.
Long been my favorite among many I still love. We lived so well, so long...

Awesome!
The first song: gorgeous
Perfect song, perfect tune.
"Loves Me Like A Rock" the gospel version! Perfect!
God gave him a gift to pass on to us ..he's done that .
Breathtaking
Style never duplicated

Stunned and amazed, I am in retrospect. An alley cat, a lobster in a warm bath and...a prefab president. Too large a progression for one lifetime.
This is so beautiful. I love tha part with Mayflower since it is so strong about heritage, Powerful indeed.
Inspiration: JS BACH
Thanks my friend for share...

tienes toda la razón.
and where did Bach get it from?

The best borrow from the best.
Many, many songwriters and composers have taken a few things from Bach. And he borrowed from others in his day.
c’mon, his “bridge over troubled water” was amazing for the voice he was given
Art Garfunkel sang BOTW

I applaud him for changing up Bridge Over Troubled Waters to a spiritual, just for the simple fact in knowing there is no competing w/ Art's version.
Apparently when he originally wrote it he saw it as a gospel song so I think this is actually a return to how he imagined it.
Love the Jessy Dixon group
One man genius who rivaled the Rolling Stones, Led Zep & The Who!
Very sweet at this age. I wonder who suggested, or did him his haircut though 🤣
1970s clothes and haircuts are something that later humans just have to endure.
Bach wrote the tune - it's not american. But still it's a lovely song.
The reality is he never needed Garfunkel.
Maybe not, but he has collaborated with other musicians his whole life and the results have always been spectacular.

For me they are the most haunting when they are singing together anyway. I hate the this one is better than that one debate. It's worthless.
I believe those are the Jessie Dixon singers accompanying him, correct?
Dixie Hummingbirds
No, the Jesse Dixon Singers were men. I saw them on tour with Paul during his first solo tour at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

You're welcome to your own opinion, but this performance of Bridge is fantastic!

This rendition of bridge over troubled waters shows how musically talented paul his, he turned it into a gospel like version.
