  • In September 1911, Italy declared war on the Ottoman Empire and embarked on the conquest of Libya, using innovative technologies such as the use of aircraft and radio in warfare. But in the aftermath of their colonial victory, Italy was left with severely depleted military forces.
In this presentation, Vanda Wilcox talks about how, in 1913 and 1914, the Italian armed forces set about analysing and learning lessons from this war, and preparing their strategic and tactical thinking for future conflict.
Vanda also discusses how Italy, previously allied to Germany and Austro-Hungary, came to 'switch sides' in the lead up to the outbreak of the First World War and how the kind of war had Italy prepared to fight in the run up to August 1914 suddenly had to change in terms of where they expected to do their fighting.

Interesting lecture! Just as I have come to expect from the folks at WFA. Nice to hear topics other than the Schlieffen Plan LOL, or the Somme. You've been doing a great job at looking at the less-publicly discussed fronts and campaigns, for which I thank you deeply!

Further to what has been said, we need to remember that in May 1915 Italy declared war only to Austria and not to Germany or to the Ottoman empire. Italy declared war to Germany only in 1916. In addition Italy entered the war against the view of the PM Giolitti and the Parliament. The Italian interventist press received importat financialsupport from France and UK. The King made a coup d'etat. We entered the war without a Parliamentary vote.In addition, through a secret London Pact negotiated in April 1914 (Cadorna was not aware...) , both UK and France promised to Italy ambitious post -war territorial acquisitions in the Adriatic to the expense of the future Yougoslavia. in 19 18 at the Versailles Treaty negotiations the US Pres. Wilson opposed these Italian territorial ambitions promised by UK and France (but not endorsed by the US and going against its 14 points released in 1917)

"Cadorna was not aware" : Truer words have never been spoken. Terminally oblivious, that man. (Terminal for his troops, at least)

Insightful discussion. Why all European countries used war as policy is very telling why this war was so damaging- for so long!

    Italy, Italy Italy.
Had two opportunities to stay out of World Wars. Nine months each time to see how it was all going.
Made bad calls both times, but really the worst call was 1915. That time the war was not going well for anyone.

Very unimpressive historian, maybe she matures and develops a deeper understanding of the nuances and reasoning of historic periods and events. She's much better to watch with subtitles and turn sound off.

Gosh, thanks ever so much for the unnecessary insulting comment. We all value your opinion.
      nah, not really.
