Love Meryl’s description of making the chestnut stuffing. I’m almost her age and remember the smell of the roasting chestnuts in NYC. The same street-cart vendors would sell big, soft pretzels, warmed up. Smells gone from the city now. Like her mom, my mom taught me to cut little x marks into the flat part of the chestnut shells (so they wouldn’t explode when cooking), then we’d cool them, peel them, and chop them for the stuffing. So good! Love Meryl!
