The Vaccines- What Did You Expect From the Vaccines? ALBUM REVIEW

The Vaccines don't have the most original of styles or tunes, but they know a catchy hook when they hear one. What Did You Expect From the Vaccines? is a record that functions on those basic principles of a catchy rock album: energy, straightforwardness, volume.
With influences ranging from the Ramones to the Jesus & Mary Chain, there's definitely some ear-shattering guitar reverb on a few of these tracks, but the Vaccines rely on simplicity more than they do guts. A few tracks do stand out a being exceptionally rowdy, but there are plenty of moments where this album lowers the heat to a simmer. To me, the slower moments aren't as captivating as the fast, but it's nice the band added more than one dimension to the songs here.
While I don't think originality is the most important of things--especially since everything is influenced by something--I find it difficult finding something to take away from this album. There a handful of fun tracks; and while the others aren't bad at all, they're nothing to flip out over, for me.
I enjoyed it, but I'm in no rush to come back, that's all. Just my opinion.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Is it a 'rip off'? What isn't a 'rip off' of something else in some way, shape, or form? Is originality all that important?
6/10

COVID-19 Listening Vibes
Great review, Anthony. Nice to hear someone pointing out the chord progressions. A little guitar action always helps too. Cheers.
Shiftony Geronimo I want your opinions on the latest Vaccines albums and see what you think of how they might have evolved if at all.
He won't because he's Anthony suckballso
Most of these indie landfill bands made a decent debut and then fell off because they had nothing else left in them. Bands that know theory well tend to get better over time but bands like this didn't have much to say
No English Graffiti review? Huh.
such a trip seeing early reviews
Your old reviews are so much better.
Maybe the feeling you get watching his old videos. But his reviews weren't better. Try comparing his old mbdtf review with his newer one. He has improved so much as a reviewer.
I love this album way more than you do, but this still remains one of my favourite reviews of yours.
Awesome review, I really love this album and The Vaccines!
Fantan has a really good voice.
@gregahunt I didn't say milk is bad. O__o I'm vegan. That's why I'm drinking almond milk. That's all.
@isaacADD I was just trying to show you that the Ramones obviously influenced the Beebz. :-P
@renascent10 glad you're digging it. :-) RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA
I love it how you destory people's lives by hardcore reviewing all these hyped bands in such a funny way and when someone parodies music in such a funny way (sung truly awesome)!
The beginning of "Blow It Up" sounds so much like a Pixies song I can't even...I can't even...
But I still love this album! Something about it is just lovely.
And I like your singing very much :)
Great review, loved the performance
I love his face when he sings the Justin Beiber song. It just screams "do I really have to do this".
i love the nostalgia in this album
Have you ever listen to howler? They were on tour with these guys, they were also great
@@tomassantos4381 i have not, are they any good?
@@xBurko yup, they only made 2 albums and an Ep but they’re pretty enjoyable, it’s a bit different from the vaccines , it’s more surf rock and less polished
@@tomassantos4381 i’ll give them a listen mate
if you like surf rock stuff go give ‘chico - dumb beach’ a listen and let me know how you find it
@@xBurko oh thanks man, never heard of them, I’ll give it a listen, do you have Instagram?
Definitely review their second album "come of age" total step up from WDYE and it sounds totally different
Listening to it right now and I love it !
@jmanzo2009 That's fine. :-)
@solarwindkid the bill will probz happen.
"They sound really close to what I love, but they're not really what I love."
I new Anthony had Beiber fever ;)
Aye I see you Anthony with that Washed Out album in the back.
oh and you should totally review the new Bill Callahan album.
also Jamie Woon, and I'm pretty sure that you're already planning on doing the
new Ponytail soon
At the risk of sounding repetitive:
'Little Joy' by My Disco
'The English Riviera' by Metronomy
'Blood Pressures' by The Kills
This is my favorite album ever
Do you watch the Vlogbrothers? They talked about the same chord progression in a video last week.
My favorite Ramones song bookened with the greatest cover ever.
I listened to The Vaccines before, and I liked it but never stuck to me. It doesn't sound very striking to me, even if I listened to it a lot then it was just because I wanted to listen to a new album. I listened to them again, after being similar to the band I am currently liking, Palma Violets and revisited the album and suddenly appreciated it more. I don't know if it was because it was something familiar, or something but it still doesn't hook me like others would. I think a 6 or 7 would be a fair judgement.
Haven't ever heard of Freedom of Speech?
Nice review. The Vaccines for me are a British version of The Drums, different genre of music (although equally as over-hyped and commercialised) but ultimately, a music fling, where they sound more than pleasant for a period, but the songs never seem to last. Definately worth a listen. Oh... and.. OMG WHY DIDN'T YOU GIVE THIS A 7 (8?) TOO?
rotfl, you singin "baby" just made my day :D (p.s you have a really nice voice)
Hey! How about a list of good summertime albums or songs?
you're awesome, dude! thanks for the review.
review the upcoming Atmosphere album: The Family Signs
You are an absolute hero!
Could you review Win Win - Self-titled at some point?
@dima210 fair enough, I know its different stuff, I'm very much aware of that, I just wasn't sure if he was necessarily a fan of melodic death metal so I was trying to make a persuasive case for him reviewing it
Can I download that song on iTunes?
great review
Would love to hear your thoughts on Dirty Beaches - Badlands
I actually enjoyed every song on the record.. Maybe a 7/10 :D
Wow, I never heard anything so much like The Ramones until Wreckin' a Bar came along.
i love this album and this band
dude, show us ur cd collection!!!! must be massive.
Anthony, nice voice! You should sing more often. :)
You should do a top 10 of your favorite albums
looking forward to seeing them at t in the park, seems like it will be quality live
I think you bring up good points, but it's because the album is so much fun that I love it. Also, The Vaccines are amazing live.
New Liturgy album - Aesthetica . Not as excited about it as the previous album. Would love to hear your thoughts, sir.
You're absolutely right! I-iv-IV-V is used ALL THE TIME! In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (the song) for instance!
If you don't mind me asking, how'd you get this?
@theneedledrop yusssss I'm looking forward to it!
The song Wetsuit is my favorite on the album as well as Family Friend, I love the sound of both of them and I really love The Vaccines lyrics. Because of the Vaccines I'm getting more into other bands that you mention like the Ramones and The Strokes but before I really was into the Arctic Monkeys.
I'd love for you to review the new Raveonettes
They also use the I vi IV V chord progression in the aeroplane over the sea and the monster mash.
Singthony fantano
@dima210 and I was really hoping I could make a recommendation without someone having to find a problem with it. I am a devildriver fan, yes we exist, I am interested in hearing his opinion on the album, if he finds it good great, if not why not and thats that. I don't expect him to agree all the way but I am interested in hearing his OPINION.
I'd like to hear what you have to say about The Kills' Blood Pressures.
i loved it :D review come of age
Can you review 'Life Of Leisure' by Washed Out please?
I would agree with the six only that there wasn't a song I disliked on the album so I would give it a seven. But as you said it suits summer BBQs or parties best.
Would love to hear a review of No Joy's 'Ghost Blonde'.
you should review the new seekae album "+dome" it came out about a month ago its amazing
Several you need to check out:
Elbow- Build a Rocket Boys
Josh T. Pearson- Last of the Country Gentlemen
The Kills- Blood Pressures
antony did u watch the vaccines at sxsw?
I need some serious music history lessons. Help me out Anthony!
Anthony, throughout your needle-dropitude, you have given my ipod the ideal tracks for
1.)walking down the street,
2.) driving in a car,
3.) moving from bar to dance floor in a club,
4.)eating a sandwich
BUT I still need some danceable rock tunes for segues from my kitchen to my living room (too dancy for sitting in a car, but not poppy enough for a club...) What you got Fantano? Drop the needle, man!
I will also accept suggestions from The Chuchesta Drop...
@pierreerichexum well Holy Ghost borrow more from a time period and a style of that time period, while Yuck and The Vaccines borrow more from specific bands, there's a difference.
"Safe and effective"
Of course, expectation and reality do not always line up...
i agree with almost everything said here, even so i feel the album should be a 6.5/close to 7 rather than 6, its a very enjoyable record without being brilliant
@CaptainComposte it hurt me on the inside, srsly. :-(
I totally see The Strokes comparisons, one of the members is actually big fan :] I agree, it's instantly enjoyable. Which is why I agree with your score, but I enjoy it more than a 6 should be enjoyed. Yum Best Coast. PLEASE Review Cat's Eyes :>

Review Elbow's "Build A Rocket Boys!"...please?
@theneedledrop Anthony, can you please make a video on becoming vegan? i'd love to hear your motivations as well as how you go about managing your nutrition. love xx
Did you ever revisited it??? Did it grow on you or is your opinion the same???
You should have reviewed the LP on your left.
great vid this
"perfect for a road trip" My idea of a road trip album is Isis - Oceanic. But then, I have no friends. :c
I don't think that originality in chord progressions is all that important. When making a song sometimes the feeling that you want to get across is best portrayed by a single simple common chord progression thats been used a million times before; however, I do expect artist to include originality in their music whether from a cool timbre in the beat or some interesting lyrics or really anything that just gives me that fresh feeling when you hear a great new piece for the first time.
Do you play with a band?
you should review:
Peter, bjorn & john - Gimme some
I didn't know u can play that rocked man
NEW BATTLES.. AWWWW YEAH
@pierreerichexum yeah I guess preference probably has the most to do with it
hey anthony, trckrvw that new Autechre track, 6582, please! great stuff!
Did you know wrecking bar was done in a single take?
Review The Kills - Blood Pressures!! Do you love it, do you hate it....and why??
