- From 1969, Gordon (Matt Robinson) reads "Stevie", written and illustrated by John Steptoe. First written when John was only 16, it was published three years later, in 1969, and received national attention when LIFE Magazine published it in full, hailing it as "a new kind of book for black children." He went on to illustrate 16 more books (wrote 10 of them), his best known being "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters", before he died of AIDS in 1989. He was only 38 years old.
Among other acclaims, he received the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration for "Mother Crocodile" (written by Rosa Guy) and "Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters". When he died, he was one of the few African-American artists making a career in children's literature. The American Library Association established the John Steptoe Award for New Talent, given to celebrate new talent and excellence in writing and/or illustration.
The torch has been passed to his son, Javaka, who won recent acclaim for illustrating "Jimi: Sounds Like a Rainbow: A Story of the Young Jimi Hendrix" by Gary Golio.

The original Gordon was an AMAZING storyteller.

Aww. The first Gordon❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow, Gordon was a happenin' dude.
A great story
That interaction with Susan in the beginning was awful. Gordon rushes through Susan's concerns, admits that he and Bob couldn't mind the store so all the pressure is on her, so just shove down those feelings and smile. And he won't encourage her by buying a soda. I appreciate that the show slowed down, talked about different feelings and became more conscious of the message it was telling kids. The later dynamic between Susan and Gordon felt much more like a team.
Read this as a book when little. Loved it.
Poor little Stevie :( awww.
Wonderful
Am I the only one who cried?
Nope :-) Harsh story for the times and something you'll never see on a kids show these days.
@@TinyDancer500 What was so harsh about it?
Why though?
Matt Robinson (Gordon Robinson) was Holly Robinson Peete's father.
I always thought these illustrations were funny as a kid.

Heres one thing about the virus. In 2008 there was also another coronavirus outbreak but also in 1996. Every 12 years is a outbreak. Take a look at this. On rats you can see those years show up. This is the chinese zodiac sign. All those outbreaks were made in china from china. There has to be bad luck every year for rats. If you are a rat like me you mightve been suffering.
