Btw charging 13k for a bike with threaded BB after years of awful QC is laughable to say the least, a silent confession of "we can't drill holes but check out this bling bike, now give us your kiss's college funds".
Unpopular opinion: The 6,8kg limit is one of the few good things in the UCI rule book. This has made the bike manufacturers focus on aerodynamics, and made room for power meters on pro bikes, which trickles down to us. When removed, weight would be, again, the sole focus. Because people still don't realise better aerodynamics (and even comfort) makes your bike much faster than a kilogram less does.
all makes bikes more reliable. There's no going around the fact that ultra lightweght bikes are flimsy. Aero bikes are faster on everything but steep ascents so lightweight bikes are not for everyone...
I have a mate who became obsessed with weight. He put pressure on one of the well known German carbon bike manufacturers to build a frame 40 or so grams lighter than they said was the lightest they could build. He raced it and was riding back to the start when the fork collapsed at only 25kph or so and he nose dived, breaking his neck. That is why the rule exists and why it should continue to exist!
My match weight was 78 kg for many years. I now weigh 82 kg. My bike weight is 8 kg. If I loose 4 kilo, it will be like I'm riding a disc brake bike that weighs 4 kilo, new world record! No need to spend insane amount of money on a ultra light bike, just spend less money on food.
Rah well if you spend so much on a light bike you will not have much left over for beers and steak, so it all works out. You’ll be eating beans and rice and getting lighter. And then you become a vegan cycling influencer with 100k followers and start wearing Rapha. It’s all in the plan. Spend more on stuff that costs less to make.
I'm not sure, how is specialized justifying their price? It looks like an old-school bike, like a Cannondale SuperSix/CAAD of yester-year. It doesn't offer any integration or aero features of the SL7. It's just light? For a bike brand that admitted they were "part of the problem" of the "walled garden of exclusion, from the community to the lack of representation to the marketing" in the sport of cycling, this seems to run exactly opposite to what they so poignantly said a month or two ago on their Instagram. One of the largest bike brands in the world peddling a fairly basic road bike for the price of a new car is sure to enforce the notion cycling is exclusively for the rich to any new cyclist whether they be an under-represented minority, a broke college student or your average Joe trying to get into the sport of cycling. Quick spreadsheet I made comparing the Cannondale and Aethos: imgur.com/a/wQgxpyq . Admittedly, it's not very detailed and thorough since I made it in about 10 minutes during a study break, but it's just proving a point.
People just need to realize how little these weight differences make in the real world and that in almost all races, you're spending a large portion of time in a pack, making those marginal differences even less.
There should be a limit of 6Kg set for the start of the 2021 season. Each year thereafter have the bike manufacturers that supply World Tour teams submit a few sample frames (ie The UCI take frames from team cars to rule out specially made frames) and test and reduce the weight limit by 100g each year IF safety checks pan out. Make it a sliding scale.
Me looking at the new Specialized Aethos - "thinking about how i am convince the missus, that daddy needs a new bike instead of us getting at new roof that is'nt as leaky as the old one".
8:22 surely you wouldn't have a kilo difference? I mean the difference between a super-light frame and one which is merely top-end-but-no-cigar is, what, 250g? Everything else is in the build - and I know that they are beholden to sponsors regarding their kit choice but that surely applies no matter what frame they use?
I thought some pros did already run 'light' bikes, but had to put aditional weights on/in them For myself I feel it can help limit 'tech doping' by teams who can throw extra money at expensive superlightweight parts. If you remove all weight limits the team who can build an all carbon bike (incliding levers, derailiers and brake calipers). You've mentioned a £13,000(!) bike. I'd be interested to see further reserch into the 'weight weinie' theory, but also vs costs
#askGCNTech My hydraulic disk brakes seem to ALWAYS be rubbing slightly and let out a terrible squeaking sound when braking hard - but even after releasing for a few seconds. I tried replacing the rotors and re-centering the calipers with no success, it always returns. What could that be?
When the whole rim brake block contacts the brake surface at the same time that too causes brake squeal, tow the blocks so the front touches before the back and that eliminates brake squeal. Unfortunately you can't tow disc brake pads like rim brake blocks so you get the noise. However try a hard ceramic compound that really eliminates brake squeal on disc brakes unlike organic or metallic pads.
@@nemeanf27 that would just fix the fact that it squeals though, but the fact that it squeals when releasing the brakes would mean that they're also continuously rubbing, no?
Sounds more like a issue with your brakes. If the pads are still touching the rotor when releasing the lever then try resetting the pistons first. If that doesn't work then the pistons might be sticky which the seal around the pistons need cleaning. Also check for a warped or bent rotor. If all that doesn't work then you need to replace the brake calipers.
The problem with the Specialized (and other expensive carbon bikes) is that they are dramatically over priced for what you get. The marketing for bikes is the same as for Coach purses. The high price makes them status objects. And stupid people buy them.

I think that if the UCI gave teams a notice that a lower weight limit is coming in a year or two would give bike manufacturers time to work on an update and most teams would end up on similar ground again. I'd like to see a lower limit set.
Specialized needs to release a alloy version of the aethos using their Smartweld technology. It would be similar to treks version on the Emonda (emonda alr). I reckon it would be a hit and would definitely be affordable for the general public.
If you're not racing, or climbing mountains, all you really need is a bike with a single chainring(48t), with 7 speed freewheel/cassette(13-28t), like a Shimano Tourney. A basic bike weight could be about 20 lbs. Alloy frame, carbon fork, 25c tires, tubes, with basic clincher wheels rim brakes.
According to Olly, it would be economcally feasible for the bike companies to ditch the weight limit and start producing £10000 bikes for the wideopen market :) Just to be clear: price and weight are inversly, price and demand are also inversly related, meaning that weight and demand should be proportionally related.
#AskGCNTech Hi Ollie, I’ve brought out my Winter wheels and realised the braking surface (rim brakes) are worn out. The hubs and spokes are pretty decent, so could I just replace the rim and keep the old spokes and hubs? Is this economically/safety viable? If I can ask a follow up to this, could I pimp them up with a 30/50mm rim instead or would that require new spokes, spoke nipples etc? Thank you.
The Aethos is not illegal; the frame is UCI approved but you would have to add ballast to get it to the minimum weight. At that point, very few pros would choose it as it has no aero advantages. Even if you were to allow it to race with its weight advantage, not "all the pros would switch to it" apart from for some mountainous stages for the same reason. Ollie has been telling us for aeons that aero is (a)everything and now says all he wants is the lightest bike out there.
What I don’t understand is that on the website they go on and on about it being super light and it breaks all the rules and it’s too light for UCI specs but yet when you look at the photos when you try to purchase one of those bikes, they put the UCI stamp on the seat tube 🤔 so if I wanted to buy which I can’t afford it anyway I would want it without the UCI stamp...
UCI limit lowers the bar for poorer teams. It's a good thing. Same thing happens in other sports, F1 etc. Levels the playing field, while maintaining safety, and keeping the sport interesting.

I'll be anxiously waiting for one of these Aethos pop up by Luscher's channel to see it from the inside.
Btw charging 13k for a bike with threaded BB after years of awful QC is laughable to say the least, a silent confession of "we can't drill holes but check out this bling bike, now give us your kiss's college funds".
Thank you GCN for giving me something to watch while I tidy the kitchen 🤪
This every time 🙌🏻😂
Why not just buy a bike from 2015 for a third of the price which would still be a bit lighter than this thanks to the rim brakes on it
Aditya less aero, less braking performance and less reliable shifting.
@@grandpalouis818 Yep. No idea why specialized actually commercialised this Lol
Grandpa Louis More aero?😂😂 You maybe save 5watts at max riding at 30avg. Have you ever need that braking power? Me, no.
Where is that aero on that climbing bike?
Honestly, going downhill on wet roads, my only real concern has been tire grip. Rim brake grip has never even crossed my mind.
that yellow bike is obviously SUPERnice :O
But what kind of riding? If you ride mountains and hills lighter is better
Ollie's accents are the best. I'd love to see him host an entire show doing a variety of American and other accents.
17:36 Ollie: screaming at himself 😂🙏🏾
i love how every manufacturer is putting threaded bb instead of pressfit nowadays to hide their quality control incompetence 🤭😆
i think your real name is "hambini"!!!! haha
haha.......might or might not be.. but an engineering student definitely 😂😅
@@faisal_al_saiful3838 and you should know press fit against cfrp is not a good idea right?
Went to the replay and I agree; The bell-ringing needs a little more oomph.
Conventional Stem and Bars
Simple 27.2 seattube
Threaded BB
Amazing Technology worth $12,000
Well, the Aethos is a bit outside my budget, but as a home mechanic I certainly appreciate the threaded bottom bracket shell. More of that, please.
Lol lock it to your ankle... 😂 😂 😂
The Specialized Allez E5 (Fulcrum Racing 5 and full 105) circa 2017 is the young man’s Aethos. ☺️🍻
Lighter top end bikes will trickle down to lighter bikes with Ultegra and 105.
Many of us who ride 105, would love that.

Must say I don't wake early in the morning thinking about the UCI!
Quick spreadsheet I made comparing the Cannondale and Aethos: imgur.com/a/wQgxpyq
.
Be even lighter if it came with rim brakes. Looks specialized have built a giant TCR 😉
I saw a meme on IG that said that 😂
The only thing funnier than Olly’s “quacking” pun was Manon’s reaction to it.
teuast the “look” manon did...
It’s a must for everyone!
Why is the seatpost of the Aethos proprietory? 27.2 mm is pretty much the standard for seatposts. Or am I mishearing something?
building up to the introduction of graphene bikes i see!
I would be terrified riding the ultra-light Aethos on garbage roads.
You break the frame then straight to the dentist.
Have you guys seen the new Aerothan tubes from Schwalbe? Any info on them?
Weight and Cannondale, although not connected in this case, bring back memories: Legalize my Cannondale!
Me looking at the new Specialized Aethos - "thinking about how i am convince the missus, that daddy needs a new bike instead of us getting at new roof that is'nt as leaky as the old one".
Would you make the Aethos a 1X (if you are a lazy shifter) and would you recommend the Sram Red Etap 1X12
The geometry looks remarkably similar to that of my four year old Felt F series frame.
Yippee 🙌 I’m back on trend 🤣😂
Regarding the UCI question, @ grand tour level they should all be riding the same or a very tight design box.
4:42 so you could build it up with cheap bits for five grand is what you're saying? :-)
After seeing the Yellow fixie maybe Ollie and Manon you need to add a new category, Super Nice, Nice and Weird???
8:22 surely you wouldn't have a kilo difference? I mean the difference between a super-light frame and one which is merely top-end-but-no-cigar is, what, 250g? Everything else is in the build - and I know that they are beholden to sponsors regarding their kit choice but that surely applies no matter what frame they use?
When I, park my bike at the cafe, the others walk straight past the modern plastic bikes to inspect my Jacques Esclassan 1977 Peugeot PY10.
gcn do you have any videos on how much a sprinter flexes their frames in the last 10M of a bunch sprint?
the forces must be huge?
I thought some pros did already run 'light' bikes, but had to put aditional weights on/in them
For myself I feel it can help limit 'tech doping' by teams who can throw extra money at expensive superlightweight parts.
@@nemeanf27 I'll make sure to inspect the calipers and pistons more closely, thanks!
Bike vault with Manon & Ollie is so different to Conor & Ollie. Conor is like the UCI with his rules. Which I got to admit is equally as entertaining.
Manon`s notebook is so clean :)
Is the UCI holding back development? Recumbent says hello.
Yeah if you want to look like a bloody wally
9:30 that kit is ducking quackers
The problem with the Specialized (and other expensive carbon bikes) is that they are dramatically over priced for what you get. The marketing for bikes is the same as for Coach purses. The high price makes them status objects. And stupid people buy them.

I just bought myself a pair of full carbon 'Fast forward' wheels. Has anyone ever used any fast forward wheels before, if not I would highly recommend they are so light and fast it's almost terrifying.
Which model did you buy? I'm thinking between the f3a and tyro for my gravel bike since they look fantastic and seem to be of high quality.
@@TwoBlockAnime Mine are Road F6D tubular. but i would 100% recommend they work like a dream. and look fantastic. also they are very well built. (from my opinion) but probably better to ask some one with more experience with them because i only bought them 3 weeks ago.

@@TwoBlockAnime yeah one of my club mates had them and didn't use them. because i was racing this year he gave me them for a discounted price which was good. But i would defiantly recommend them for any one.

That’s a big rock on Manon’s engagement finger!!!!! Who’s the lucky man.... Hank??????
Ollie talking dirty to Manon with his SL5 v SL7 😂
You joked about adding weights to a bike that is under the legal limit; this is what's done in kayak racing!
23:48 That cassette is just frightening. That gear ratio is what, 55 x 6? It’s a very cool looking bike but I doubt I could pedal it a mile before collapsing, especially in that super slammed position.
Grinders unite! Like back in the 70's when they used "corncob" clusters.
How many times I need to post pictures of my bike on GCN app to eventually being featured in the Bike Vault, Olie???
Patator if it’s not over 5 grand with Di2 you won’t even get a look
My bike is beautiful , all carbon, love it honestly couldn’t ask for more, fantastic bike but it has a 105 group set , automatically never making the bike vault
@@seniorcycling5352 well, I've seen a few 105's and even Tiagra's being featured previously. I think neither one likes a true bike manufacture- Bianchi or Colnago. My guess is the more boring and generic brands are better suited for their taste.;)
With this episode, I'm 3 for 3 on my submissions.

Founder's Edition - is this an nVidia 3080 launch?
The UCI stifles innovation. More concerned about sock height, where the stripes are on your sleeve, what the kit looks like than rider safety and tech innovations to make cycling better. Ollie quacks me up. Finally the plexiglass barrier is protecting Mannon from Ollies hair virus.
Exactly.
Great show!
Clicked this vid while eating pierogies covered in cheddar and MUSTARD!
I think that if the UCI gave teams a notice that a lower weight limit is coming in a year or two would give bike manufacturers time to work on an update and most teams would end up on similar ground again. I'd like to see a lower limit set.
It rhymed with her name when Manon said 'fan on' and it could be a hit with the indoor set, the Manon Fanon.
Of course that orbea will be in the bike vault
Specialized needs to release a alloy version of the aethos using their Smartweld technology. It would be similar to treks version on the Emonda (emonda alr). I reckon it would be a hit and would definitely be affordable for the general public.
we need a commuter specific youtube channel presented by you guys.
All competitors should ride the exact same bike, no matter what weight. All equal and let the best rider(s) win.
i did some uci races with non uci legal bikes and there was no problem.
as long as you don't win no one cares
Of course its overpriced, it's a Specialized. Lame "illegal" talking point, it can absolutely be speced to meet the required minimum.
I'm really finding this channel too routine now. Getting bored a bit. There were some great presenters here. Its a bit flat. What do you think?
@@AllIsWellaus at least gmbn is still entertaining
If you're not racing, or climbing mountains, all you really need is a bike with a single chainring(48t), with 7 speed freewheel/cassette(13-28t), like a Shimano Tourney. A basic bike weight could be about 20 lbs. Alloy frame, carbon fork, 25c tires, tubes, with basic clincher wheels rim brakes.
I wonder how much (or little) it would weigh with rim brakes. (And no disc brakes)
