Back in the day shopping for school clothes you mom seeing if it fits ,with the music playing in the background following you mom shopping bobbing your head 😂 man the good old days
omg the photo from the 16:20 song is from a defuncted store named Dorian's here in Mexicali! located in the Plaza La Cachanilla mall, being the parfums zone the one displayed on the photo. no edition involved, as you see it is how it used to look, the entire store! i loved that store, it had that 80s jungle atmosphere, and a salad buffet on the 2nd floor!!! we got so sad when it became a sears store and lost all of that architecture :( It was a living time machine from the early 80s!
"See, guys, I told you they're still open.. the lights are all on, and that godawful music is still playing. Although, I dunno, this one's kinda catchy actually; great music to shave by, y'know guys?" "....guys?"
FYI, the pictures featured during the songs at 27:21 and 30:16 are both from the Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18 theater in St. Charles, IL. The first shot is taken from the concourse of the Charlestowne Mall, which closed in 2017. The former mall entrance inside the theater lobby is walled off now. Toyota filmed a nationwide commercial inside the dead mall shortly after it closed to the public (search "Toyota commercial Charlestowne Mall," and it'll come up easily enough). It's pretty epic. The only parts of the mall that remain are the theater and a Von Maur store. The rest of the mall still stands but is inaccessible to the public (though you can still walk up to the old mall entrances and peek in). OP, thank you for this mix. I've been listening to mallsoft for years, and this is one of my new favorites. The pictures are well-chosen.
@riverfairdonnie DUDE you're right! That mall was the best. I graduated high school in 2012 so I was among the last generation to witness Charlestowne before closing. That area is so freakin sad now, wish everyone didnt buy amazon so we could still have malls
I normally don't comment, but holy moly I just gotta say I appreciate what you do. The way the pictures flow together, the songs picked, this channel never fails to impress me on those aspects. Your videos have been my go to for focusing music and the such. Amazing mix once again, thank you for what you do!!
"Designer Dreams" at 47 minutes is the Cincinnati Mills mall in Cincinnati. As of this minute that is still the largest dead mall in the world, with over 1mil square feet of dead space. Time capsule back to 1994. Regrettably, slated to be torn down later this year.
This mix instills a sadness in me that cannot be cured by anything but a true-to-form revival of the malls. Could it even be done? I feel this sadness is terminal to my heart, and it angers me in a cold way.
The decline of malls in the West, the nostalgia captured by Mallsoft, and the rise of China and BRICS are all interconnected. The decline of traditional retail spaces reflects deeper shifts in Western capitalism-where consumer power has diminished, manufacturing has moved overseas, and the economy is increasingly driven by financialization and digitalization. Meanwhile, China and BRICS nations have become global economic players, influencing not only trade and manufacturing but also cultural and economic norms. Mallsoft serves as a sonic reflection on these broader economic and cultural transformations.
The good old days when you could walk around the mall carefree with an Orange Julius in hand, not worrying about contracting a disease floating in the air, or being caught up in a gang shooting in the food court!
we did fight our way back into the malls within weeks of 9/11, and there were many trendy diversions within for years thereafter... but the internet had already started gutting out malls by then, and I would be interested in seeing how many malls died between 9/11/2001 and 01/01/2010
24:54 This is tri county mall in Cincinnati Ohio, i used to work at rue 21. That food court has been gone for longer than the mall has. the mall is still standing but its shut down. before it was shut down, they took ALL the chairs away and the only thing in that HUGE space was the baby rides in the middle. the sun would shine directly on it and it was the EMBODYMENT of liminal. the mall was a banger but corpos didnt know how to make money and added stuff no one wanted AND TOOK THE CENTER FOUNTAIN...anyway ye, the mall was cool :)
Yeah, I completely agree with you. The word "authenticity" perfectly captures the overall appeal and aesthetic of those times. I really wish I could go back. Everything, from the music, design and fashion to the early days of the internet and mobile phones, felt more meaningful and not so distracting that it dominated our lives. I long for a time when we actually looked each other in the eye, rather than becoming hypersensitive and isolated smartphone zombies. To me, it feels like the beginning of the end started with the shift to smartphones and the surge in social media usage. I was born in 1996 as a late child and I did not have access to the internet all the way until 2008. The only technology I had access to was an old Apple PowerBook G4, a GameBoy Advance SP and a Nokia 2100. Most of the films, music, and TV series I grew up with were from the 80s and 90s, and outside of that life felt vibrant, friendships flourished, and there was a sense of hope.
I like that Vaporwave aesthetic but I disagree. Since the start of human civilisation, people have always reminisced about the past. In a few decades people will even look back and miss the 2020s.
Im ngl, I actually just came for the images this time lol, but damn these are good. some of them I can really imagine being in, 58:20 is probably the best one for me. I can fully imagine the feeling of being there somehow
I found that the shopping mall hall itself was an effect that gave the music a nostalgic feel.

Yeah,I remember roaming around that store in the early 2000 when trying to catch the bus after secondary school. It was a nice store hehehehe
That green hue makes me want to light up a kool menthol cigarette.
Shocked that the first mall picture is right by my house! And I took a picture of it the other day wow😮
Out of all branches of Vaporwave, there's nothing quite like these Mallsoft mixes 🥰

I love the journey through the mall concept I think more could be done with this

Instant like just from the first song. So chill and beautiful. Love the mix, tysm for the upload ❤

Fitting how this playlist ends on a shot of a Sears.
Mallsoft + nightdrive? Yes please
The early 2000s. Little did we know that era would be the most joyful pure bliss.

The end of the malls. I cannot say that I miss them, very much, but, I did not dislike them, either.
Wow, that's exactly how I feel about malls. Rarely go in them, but would be sad if they all disappeared

These times were more organic and better than now. People did suck, like always, But there was something authentic about the 90s and 2000s.

Does anyone know where 32:07 is from? it looks like a future funland kind of mall with all the space design and star aesthetics! So mesmerizing!
53:16 isn’t a mall…it’s the Akashic records
Brrr this channel's videos always get creepy at the end!
