Before she was slaying vampires, Buffy was selling Burger King Whoppers.

The 55th Annual Academy Awards...Gandhi would go on to win Best Picture that year, despite movies like E.T. and Tootsie being more favored that year. There was actually some controversy among movie buffs, with many thinking Spielberg's film got robbed that year. Despite this, there was absolutely no bad blood between Spielberg and Gandhi's director, Richard Attenborough. In fact, them both being up for awards struck up a friendship between the two, and led to Attenborough appearing as John Hammond in Spielberg's Jurassic Park, as well as returning to do a cameo for The Lost World.

yusakug back when movies that people actually watched won Oscars. I don’t think I’ve seen a best picture since The King’s Speech (which is a damn good movie; probably one of my favorites)

Things I'll remember from this set of commercials during The Thorn Birds:
    Commodore
    Renault
    ABC programming in 1983
KGO glitches throughout (again at 5:58)

Back when TV was still something special.

Wait so let me get this straight...before "beige box" computers with CPU's, keyboards and mouse, computers were "typewriter style" electronic keyboards that required to be hooked up to a cathode ray television?

No, most computers back then had dedicated monitors that were typically attached to the computer itself...all of which were CRT's (you can see this in the ad). The Commodore 64 was cheaper because it didn't come with a monitor and was essentially just a keyboard with a small computer inside.

Wow, the Academy Awards were either really late that year (April 11th, 1983), or they were very early this year (February 9th, 2020). I’m banking on the later since next year it will be on February 28th. Spoiler alert: Gandhi won. Also, it’s pretty funny that they had 4 hosts (only one of whom is still living) in 1983 when they were sans host the last two years in a row.

They've been traditionally held in late March, but often have been held in early April: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Academy_Awards_ceremonies#Ceremonies

That commercial probably tried to poke fun of the 40's noir genre. As you can see with the detective hat on his head.
