If you are having Sciatica nerve pain & hamstring pain this is very common! The sciatic nerve runs from the lumbar spine, through the gluteal region, and then courses down the leg through much of the hamstring group. From there, it continues on its path into the legs and feet.
In many cases, those suffering an irritation to the sciatic nerve often feel tightness, burning, and/or numbness in the hamstring group of muscles. This tightness, often causes patients to want to stretch, however, doing so can cause an increase in pain and discomfort. This episode deals exactly with hamstring discomfort caused by sciatica nerve pain. Watch this episode and you will see why it is so important to deal with this properly.

I think stretching my hamstring improperly was what made me have sciatica issues in the first place. Obviously could be wrong but I do feel this way.

Great advise. It is criminal to hear videos recommending stretching.

I cannot tell you how many people STRETCH an injury and it makes it worse often. Especially for sciatica.

Yes. It happened to me. What happens is that stretching a muscle initially feels good which masks the damage done to the nerve which does not need to be stretched.

What most people cannot accept .. sometimes stretching aggravates back pain .. first thing we are taught as children .. stretching must be done by everyone .. don't do what hurts you .. sounds simple but people think you can work out nerve pain .. wrong

Been through this many times, stretching only makes it worse. I use a foam roller slowly on my quads, basically planking, works every time.

I stretch my hamstrings properly and my sciatica went away

It is possible to have an entrapment of the sciatic nerve at the hamstrings. In your case, proper stretching likely helped to free it up! Nice!

First week of CrossFit after not doing it for 4 years . Now I can't walk. Or straighten my leg.

Hopefully you recover quickly and its more soreness than anything. Consider this as a sign you may need to ease into it or adjust your programming.

Its not true that all kinds of stretching will irritate the nerve and cause pain.
Some stretching can be beneficial, as long as it isn’t enough to irritate the nerve.
I wouldn’t recommend against stretching, just not stretching to fix sciatica. I recommend stretching for general wellness and maintaining of strength and mobility, as long as it doesn’t aggravate your sciatica.
