I think the problem with Ruby Bell's character isn't her personality and complexity but rather the fact that people tend to have trouble understanding complicated female characters. She spent her whole life hiding from others because she knew she was different, she felt she couldn't be seen by the world because she wasn't considered their equal, and so she did everything she could to prove them wrong, for example by not taking the money James offered her, because she didn't want to appear desperate in his eyes and be talked down to in that way, so when one of the only moments when she really lets herself go is when James's father belittles her, reminding her that in their eyes she's nothing, and then her face is plastered everywhere, she feels humiliated to find herself on a poster with James, who's THE boy of the school, and in the eyes of the students she'll look ridiculous next to him in the photo Ruby isn't badly written, her character is above all very complex, but that's the beauty of it in my opinion, because she has to act and always be on the alert to make sure that nothing will tarnish her reputation or that people won't find out about her, and then everything changes in just one day so it's too much all at once and she end up having a panic attack in the middle of class. (By the way love your reactions)

A lot of the problems i think people have with understanding Ruby is because they don't get how untreated trauma can have ripple effects on all of your life that don't make sense to outsiders. Anxiety triggers and negative coping mechanisms can jump weird, especially if the inciting trauma happened when you were really young. This is because little kids don't understand things or think about them the same way adults do. Once you know his trauma (abusive dad), everything else James does makes more sense. We learn that at the beginning of ep 2, so we're not left guessing very long, and it's something we've seen in other media before, so we recognize the signs. With Ruby's trauma, we don't really know about it until the end of ep 3 and it's not common in media, so we don't recognize the signs from the little hints they drop beforehand. So, people get frustrated about not understanding her and blame her for it, when it's actually us being privileged not to know this kind of trauma. Both Ruby and James were written as complex characters who seem like common archetypes at first on purpose, so the author could slowly show that everyone is more complicated than what you see first. Neither is perfectly good or bad, and it's worth taking the time to look deeper before judging. It's a subtle but powerful message. This is carried through with even the other side characters as the series continues. As a person like Ruby, who was blamed by people who assumed things about her and tried to deal with her trauma on her own (not always well)...well, i totally feel this story. Is it sort of a broken fairytale and very tropey? Yeah, on purpose. So i don't judge. I look for what they are trying to do with it, and i appreciate the effort, even if it doesn't always hit perfectly. This is the kind of show that i bet gets more liked and understood as you go on learning more about the why's and backstories of all the characters, and definitely on repeat viewing.
I would not have taken that money either! I don't want to be tethered to someone and have them keeping tabs on me - what did you just say to that person?!!? No! "You didn't grow here. You flew here" DEAD, I'M DEAD!!!! I fell in love with Ruby when she read James like a book and sent him almost literally packing with a travel bag! Do the other three for us!

Happy birthday! I think the conflict in the first ep was about principles. James was trying to protect his sister & because of his status and family name he is used to ppl manipulating them for money. So he just offered it thinking it would solve the problem. But Ruby is used to being underestimated and looked down on. She’s the poor/scholarship kid at a school of elites and she wants to succeed on her skills and principles. If James had just asked her not to tell Lydia’s secret it would’ve been one thing but to not even bother to remember her name then throw money at her assuming she would take it or blackmail them is insulting. I really don’t blame her for being annoyed. There is some stuff about her past experiences with the wealthy at her school that colors how she react to James that is in the books but not in the show. Had it been added it would’ve made her more sympathetic. And while I thought the poster was very sweet I also get why someone with anxiety issues would be very freaked out by showing up to school and having their face plastered all over the building with classmates who usually ignore her pointing and talking about her. I agree the first two eps were a bit rough to get through until the scene where she apologized and things start to shift between them. Ep 3 was the best of the bunch and really set up a good romance.

James was slick in that dance scene in the 3rd episode - DAMN! It does have some cliche sexy bod shots, how and odd dialogue from the jump which seems almost rushed into the lovers side but the cinematic ways it shows the themes are beautifully played with. Ruby wants to stand alone so she won't be tainted by actions of a scandal while James doesn't even think of her ideals. Now, those blue intense eyes melt too much but he hasn't realized she is impacted more by her than she is to him.
This show is so good! After this you should react to My Lady Jane- it’s fun escapism & turned out to be my favorite show of the summer. Happy Belated Birthday 🎂
Sometimes I thought that things didn’t make much sense , but when you are young it generally happens, even when James declares war to her , it has to do more with the thing that you feel attraction to someone but you haven’t realized yet kind of 😂 like “she is defying me” and “it turns me on” but I keep saying that is a war 🤣and is blaming her for nonsense (It happens to me a couple of times when I was a teenager, like you like someone but avoid him or hate him in a stupid way and after a while you realise that your attention it taken by attraction 😂😂😂

Part of it also might come down to Damian's acting which is amazing imo. I'm not saying Harriet is bad by any means but especially Damian's facial acting is really great. And he has more of an arc as a character.

You need to rewatch because when does Ruby ever tell James she’ll keep her mouth shut? The only one she tells it’s not her business is Mr. Sutton. This isn’t to excuse his behavior but she never tells James anything but to “leave her alone”

I feel like Ruby wanted James to understand her life but she couldn’t take the time or moment to understand his life situation especially with his dad. She didn’t read the room especially after she left James and the dad alone like what did she expect? She should have put 2 and 2 together and knew why James acted that way afterwards instead she just-argh she annoyed me alot of scenes which makes it kind of hard to like her sometimes. She expects James to just drop everything and be “brave” and it’s like not easy for him cause there is alot at stake. Sure James did some questionable things but atleast he’s trying in my opinion…Ruby needs to be more understanding about James situation for one sec and actually see him for who he is and not what she expects him to be for her

I feel like Ruby wanted James to understand her life but she couldn’t take the time or moment to understand his life situation especially with his dad. She didn’t read the room especially after she left James and the dad alone like what did she expect? She should have put 2 and 2 together and knew why James acted that way afterwards instead she just-argh she annoyed me alot of scenes which makes it kind of hard to like her sometimes. She expects James to just drop everything and be “brave” and it’s like not easy for him cause there is alot at stake. Sure James did some questionable things but atleast he’s trying in my opinion…Ruby needs to be more understanding about James situation for one sec and actually see him for who he is and not what she expects him to be for her

Don't understand how anyone can enjoy this. It's unrealistic and doesn't make sense. Set in England and everyone has English names.... but everyone speaks German? Like why wasn't this simply produced in the UK?! So irritating. I'm German btw
